Location The Practice is based in the market town of Olney in the North of Buckinghamshire. This is approximately 12 miles from Northampton, Wellingborough, Bedford and Milton Keynes City Centre, all of which have rail links to London, the Midlands and the North of England. Access to the M1 motorway is at Junction 14, which is about 8 miles distance.

The Consultancy

The Consultancy is situated in the centre of town, in a self-contained office. It was founded as a partnership in 1978. In 1995 the partnership was incorporated as a limited company with two directors, Stuart Thomas and Keith Gasson. Keith Gasson had previously worked for Jenkins and Potter and as a senior structural engineer at Milton Keynes Development Corporation. Winston Wright joined us in 2013 and brings over 12 years post graduate experience in a full range of commercial & residential design. Winston achieved full chartership in 2014. Malcolm Thomas joined us in 1989 and brings 29 years experience within Structural & Civil Engineering service covering a variety of projects from warehouses, residential housing, barn conversions, with related highways and drainage involvement. Sean Morgan joined us in February 2016 and brings 9 years experience within Energy & Chemical fields producing structural 3D models. Sean qualified B Eng(Hons) Civil & Structural Engineering in 2014. Stuart Thomas had previously gained extensive experience with Ove Arup, Oscar Faber and as a Senior Structural Engineer at Milton Keynes Development Corporation. He has retired from full time work but remains as Company Secretary and as support during periods of high work load.

Client Base Our clients include small and medium scale Developers with a wide variety of interests, local Architects, and Contractors. We are also employed by Local Authorities including Milton Keynes Council, Hospital Authorities including Milton Keynes Hospital Trust, and Government bodies with establishments in the local area. Projects General Profile The Consultancy has handled a wide variety of projects across the construction industry. These include business parks, residential housing estates with related highways and drainage; office, storage, warehouse and laboratory buildings; new schools and extensions to teaching blocks, sports and drama halls; hospital improvements, barn conversions, Oil /Rapeseed Plant. Specialist projects have included large private houses, firearms training centre, food processing installations, manufacturing facilities including complex support structures for the glass container making industry, chimneys and bases, waste management machinery, overhead craneage facilities, wind tunnels, printing plants and several MRI scanner installations. With less frequency work is also undertaken in the fields of structural surveys (often for the local authority), building extensions and underpinning. Civil works include site development roads and drainage, together with associated adoptions. Steel frames are fully designed in house for most projects, and a design service is operated for local steelwork fabricators. Site feasibility studies include geotechnical/environmental desk studies and setting up of subsequent intrusive investigations. Main services and natural drainage are investigated.

Recent and Current Projects Project Locations and Scope of Work By intent STA’s operations tend to be within 1 hour of the Office therefore mainly Beds, Bucks, Northants, but projects are taken further afield for established clients Generally, STA carries out projects of value up to £4-5m. The order book looks to be full for the foreseeable future.

Whitelands Farm Barns – Bicester Many projects entailed foundation, superstructure design. Design of drainage, retaining walls and external works layout.

Over the Past 10 years at Milton Keynes General Hospital STA have been appointed in connection with separate projects such as a walk-in centre, cardiology unit, multi-storey carpark, and wards and office extensions. Most of these were sourced under Procure21 and our appointment was by IHP (Vinci/Norwest Holst + Alfred McAlpine). A new multi-storey Car Park and mortuary have recently been completed for MK Hospital.

At Milton Keynes Knowlhill two separate Office Developments, each with multiple buildings, have been completed recently for a local Developer/Property Company.

At Bilston, West Midlands STA acted for a small Developer on a new £2m Office Complex for Dolphin Bathrooms, completed in April 06. Ground conditions were backfilled open cast mine, the top 3m lime/cement stabilised under this contract.

We have also completed a large expansion project for a print company in Bicester. The main infill unit having a 70m x 40m lattice truss construction.
