Holy Communion The New Testament reveals Jesus to be the Passover lamb sacrificed on Calvary for our sins

(see 1 Cor 5:7-8; 1 Pt 1:19; Rev 5:6). However, in the Passover, as in other Jewish sacrificial rites, it was not enough to have the animal killed. Eating the sacrificial lamb was an essential part of the Passover

celebration (see Ex 12:8-12). A communion meal followed the sacrifice, and it was the shared meal that expressed the sealing of the covenant and forged communion between the participants and God. This is important implications for understanding the Eucharist as communion. If Jesus is the new

Passover lamb who was sacrificed for our sins, it would seem fitting that there would be a communion meal accompanying his sacrifice on the cross– a meal in which we would partake of he true sacrificial

Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. Looking at it from a biblical perspective, we might almost expect there to be a communion meal flowing from Christ’s sacrifice. This would follow the biblical pattern of sacrifice and

communion. St. Paul points us in this direction in his first letter to the Corinthians, which reflects this Jewish notion of sacrifice and communion. He taught, “Christ, our paschal lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us, therefore,

celebrate the festival” (1 Cor 5:7-8). Notice how Christ’s sacrifice is understood to find its culmination in a festive meal. Paul later makes clear what festive meal he has in mind: the Eucharist. In chapter 11, he gives an account of Jesus instituting the Eucharist at the Last Supper, and in Chapter 10, he describes the profound unity established through partaking of Christ’s body and blood: “The cup of blessing which we bless, is it not a communion in the blood of Christ? The bread which we break, it is not a communion in the body of Christ? Because there is one bread, we who are many are one body, for we all partake in

one bread” (1 Cor 10:16-17). It is no wonder that the Catholic Church has seen holy communion as the climax of Eucharistic worship.

As the Catechism explains, “The celebration of the Eucharistic sacrifice is wholly directed toward the intimate union of the faithful with Christ through communion. To receive communion is to receive Christ himself of us.” Indeed, holy communion is the most profound union we can have with God this said of eternity. God comes to us sacramentally on our altars at Mass and remains present to us outside of

Mass in the tabernacle. This alone is quite awe-inspiring! But God’s desire to unite himself to us goes even further. In holy communion , Our Lord enters our bodies, joining himself to our souls in this most

intimate union. This is the time to give our fullest attention to the Lord, as he dwells within us after holy communion. When we come back to our seat at church, we should pour our hearts out to the Lord– to love him, to thank him, to share our deepest needs and petitions with him. In these moments after communion, we become like Mary, who carried the God-Man in her womb for nine months. What a mystery! Mary had her creator and savior in her womb! And yet, what happened in Mary also happens to some degree

sacramentally within us, when we receive the body and blood of Our Christ. We become living tabernacles, housing the presence of the God-Man himself. This is not the time to be looking around to

see people are wearing. This is not the time to be thinking about the football game later this afternoon or developing a strategy for how to get out of the parking lot quickly. This is the time to rest with Our Lord

who has so lovingly come to dwell within us. Receiving holy communion regularly can have a tremendous impact on our daily lives. It can help us overcome weakness and sin, guide us in our decisions, support us in our trials and sufferings, and

enable us to grow in holiness. By nourishing ourselves with the Eucharistic body and blood of Christ, we are gradually transformed by his very life dwelling within us. In a sense, to use a modern expression, we

become what we eat! That is a point St. Leo the Great once made: “Nothing else is aimed at in our partaking of the body and blood of Christ, then that we change into what we consume, and ever bear in

spirit and flesh him in whom we have died, been buried, and have risen. In conclusion, we have seen the Mass as a sacrifice, real presence, and holy communion. With this

basic background, we are now prepared to begin our biblical walk though the part of the Mass.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In 1794, a young Irishwoman befriended two widows aboard ship while emigrating to America. They bought a house in

Philadelphia and began to live a community life under the direction of a priest. Soon they relocated to Washington. There, the "pious ladies," as the neighbors called them, were asked by their priest friend, by then the president of Georgetown University, to begin a religious community. In 1799 they established a branch of the Visitation Order

founded by Saint Jane de Chantal and Saint Francis de Sales in the 1620s. The unique vision of this order followed a sensible routine, less arduous and more flexible than most traditions, and also

accepted widows and older women. Amazingly, this American outpost of the Visitation began without reference to the "rule" of the Order. Most of the European convents had been lost under the "reign of terror," and the rules and customs

of the community could not be obtained. A copy of the rule was discovered in 1812, and in 1816 the pope officially established the monastery. By then, some French nuns had regrouped, and they sent a habit and cross to be copied.

(No religious wore the habit in public in the United States until after the Civil War.) From the beginning, the Georgetown nuns had an educational mission, even though they discovered in the "rule" that such work was officially off-limits for the contemplative life. In America, the nuns depended on a school for their livelihood, so the rule was adapted. Today, the Academy of the Visitation is a thriving example of excellence in Catholic education, and the adjacent monastery is the

oldest monastic foundation in the original thirteen United States. --Rev. James Field, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

GOD’S WORK We are so busy! Most of us have more than one job to do, and we never seem to have enough time. We are workers, volunteers, parents, friends, and most of us are more than one thing at a

time. But which of these is the work of God? We seldom view our ordinary work as being the work of God. We may think that we have to be

ministers or priests, missionaries or charity workers, engaged full-time in works formally identified as being "God's work." But everything we do with a faithful heart and with love for others is God's work. We each have our own role to fill in the world, and many gifts are necessary. We cannot al-ways see the direct connection of our daily work to the plan of God. But we trust and we believe

that God leads us to do what is needed, where it is needed. What is "God's work?" "This is the work of God, that you believe in the one he sent" (John 6:29).

PRAYER FOR HURRICANE SEASON O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed

your order and returned to its former quietude; You are still the Master of land and sea. We live in the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the Gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awaken from its

seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. Dur-ing this hurricane season we turn to You, O loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are

still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with your Son on our behalf, so that spared from the calamities com-mon to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your Divine Son

to reach the heavenly Jerusalem where a storm less eternity awaits us. Amen.
