Structure of the Earth

The structure of the Earth can be defined in two ways: Chemically, or by mechanical properties:

• Chemically, the interior of the earth is divided into 3 important layers, divided into the crust, mantle, and core. The geologic component layers of Earth are at the following depths below the surface.

• Mechanically, it can be divided into lithosphere, asthenosphere, mesosphere, outer core, and the inner core

• The liquid outer core, magma, surrounds the inner core

• The Earth's mantle extends to a depth of 2890 km, making it the thickest layer of the Earth.

• The crust ranges from 5 to 70 km in depth and is the outermost layer:

• The thin parts are the oceanic crust. • The thicker crust is continental crust.
