Visual Classification Most tasks that involve working with mortgage loan files could be scripted by saying something like, "Go to Docu- ment Type A, pull data element X, and place it in Field Z in the Loan Originaon System." If direcons like those could be automated accurately, the data in the LOS would reflect the underlying documenta- on and analysts could avoid spending me in the actual file. Unfortunately, accurate, comprehensive document classificaon has been difficult to achieve in pracce using text-based rules, scripts, and exemplars. It required new technology. The StoneHill Group is the first mortgage services provider to have implemented visual classificaon technology from BeyondRecognion LLC ("BR"). While BR uses mulple technologies to classify documents and idenfy document boundaries, the core classificaon technology uses visual classificaon to group visually similar pages. Like facial recognion, fingerprinng, or self-driving vehicles, visual classificaon is text agnosc. In fact, even documents with completely different languages can fall in the same clusters if they are visually similar. Visual classificaon has two significant advantages: 1.) The clusters of visually similar pages are self-forming. The data describes itself. SMEs are not expected to know which document types are present and how to differen- ate one type from another. 2.) The clustering is, as menoned above, text agnosc, and is not dependent on OCR quality. To show how classificaon can be accomplished without being able to read the text of documents, consider the 12 thumbnail images in the right column of documents classi- fied as Closing Disclosures. It's easy to see that the first 11 examples have the same layout, but that the 12th example would fall into a differ- ent cluster. In fact, there can be over a thousand different visually similar clusters that receive the same classifica- on. The StoneHill Group has devoted thousands of hours to developing and tuning the two-er mortgage document classificaon tree, dramacally cung the me to imple- mentaon. Two-tier classifica-tion labels are used to provide consistent bookmarks for most efficient access (see inside).

Bookmarks can be stacked in the same order across all loan files for even more consistent access (see inside).

Documents needed for specific tasks can be placed under a top-level bookmark devoted to that task.

SearchThe entire loan file is text-searchable.

Visual ClassificationMost tasks that involve working with mortgage loan files could be scripted by saying something like, "Go to Docu- ment Type A, pull data element X, and place it in Field Z in the Loan Origination System."

If directions like those could be automated accurately, the data in the LOS would reflect the underlying documenta- tion and analysts could avoid spending time in the actual file. Unfortunately, accurate, comprehensive document classification has been difficult to achieve in practice using text-based rules, scripts, and exemplars. It required new technology.

The StoneHill Group is the first mortgage services provider to have implemented visual classification technology from BeyondRecognition LLC ("BR"). While BR uses multiple technologies to classify documents and identify document boundaries, the core classification technology uses visual classification to group visually similar pages. Like facial recognition, fingerprinting, or self-driving vehicles, visual classification is text agnostic. In fact, even documents with completely different languages can fall in the same clusters if they are visually similar.

Visual classification has two significant advantages:

1.) The clusters of visually similar pages are self-forming. The data describes itself. SMEs are not expected to know which document types are present and how to differenti-ate one type from another.

2.) The clustering is, as mentioned above, text agnostic, and is not dependent on OCR quality.

To show how classification can be accomplished without being able to read the text of documents, consider the 12 thumbnail images in the right column of documents classi-fied as Closing Disclosures.

It's easy to see that the first 11 examples have the same layout, but that the 12th example would fall into a differ- ent cluster. In fact, there can be over a thousand different visually similar clusters that receive the same classifica- tion.

The StoneHill Group has devoted thousands of hours to developing and tuning the two-tier mortgage document classification tree, dramatically cutting the time to imple- mentation.

Stacking Order Specifies Order & Nesting of ClassificationsClients can specify how bookmarks for classifications are to be nested and ordered for the most efficient processing of specific tasks or use cases. These are just examples:

See back page for information on how visual classification provides the technical ability to achieve consistent classification of document types.
