On behalf of the Enloe Foundation, I am pleased to present our 2019 annual report. As you will see, your generosity provides critical support to one of the best community hospitals in the country and to an outstanding group of physicians, employees, and volunteers.

We are grateful for the faith and trust you place in us every day as we

work together to raise the health status of the population we serve and participate in the rebuilding of our area in the wake of one of our nation’s most destructive wildfires.

Our report starts with Enloe Medical Center’s most recent accomplishments and accreditations, followed by an introduction to individuals, who like you, have chosen to give to their local nonprofit health care organization. You will also get acquainted with our volunteer Foundation Board of Directors, as

well as our strategic partners and other organizational leaders. You will see illustrated key statistics that demonstrate the vital role Enloe Medical Center plays in the region and learn how your gifts support our efforts. Most importantly, you will read how the work we do touches the lives of our community in a deep and meaningful way.

Considering the tremendous benefit your gifts bring to Enloe Medical Center and those we serve, we take seriously the need to keep Foundation operating costs low. Last year, less than 20 cents on the dollar was spent raising funds, compared with the national average of 30 cents for each dollar. This way, more of your donations directly benefit those who need it most.

Steve and Kathy were instrumental in making Enloe’s most recent expansion a reality. They made the lead donation to the Century Project Capital Campaign, a gift that is honored and remembered with the naming of the Nettleton Mother & Baby Care Center. The pair has been there every step of the way as Enloe has grown into the state-of-the-art medical center it is today. And Kathy’s generosity continues on, with a gift to Enloe Foundation planned in her will.

People like the Nettletons are at the heart of what we do, and we are endlessly grateful.

Growing with Us

Steve and Kathy Nettleton represent many of the qualities that make Enloe Medical Center special: dedication, strength and forward-thinking inspiration. Kathy smiles as she reflects on her most recent gift to Enloe, in memory of her husband, saying, “I was always just trying to keep up with him.”

When Kathy moved to Chico in 1971, she joined the Enloe Hospital Auxiliary, known as the Pink Ladies, to meet people in her new community. Like so many Enloe volunteers, this led to a lifetime of involvement — and sometimes even adventure — with Enloe.

Steel is forged in fire. The same principle applies to human beings. Tested by adversity, we rise to meet the challenges before us, stronger and more focused than ever.

This past year, our entire region experienced more than its fair share of adversity. In the immediate days following the Camp Fire, we found peace only in exhausted sleep, found joy only in the outpouring of love and support shown by our collective community. Those days tested us all.

Slowly, a sense of order settled over the community, recovery groups formed, and divvied up the work needed to care for ourselves and our neighbors. For the most part, those groups continue with their mission – and the work continues.

At Enloe Medical Center, several hurdles remain in caring for the needs of a larger population and filling the gap left by the loss of nearly one-third of the county’s health care infrastructure. There is no quick-fix in this scenario. However, through thoughtful problem-solving and a lot of hard work by each person in the organization, we have harnessed every available resource and found the rhythm necessary to clear the hurdles when we meet them.

Despite the challenges, we have continued to improve and refine patient-centered care. Multiple national hospital rating agencies, including Healthgrades, U.S. News &

We appreciate your role in completing the $5 million capital campaign to build the new Starmer Cardiovascular Care Center, your generous contributions to the Camp Fire Relief Fund and your ongoing support of patient-centered programs.

Your consistent giving to the Enloe Foundation makes possible an annual donor retention rate of 68%. This rate, which measures donors who give year after year, far exceeds the industry average of 45%. Thank you! The Foundation Board would be remiss if we did not acknowledge how grateful we are for the dedicated and hard-working Foundation staff. Their efficient and effective work raised a total of $2.5 million this fiscal year, at a cost of only 19 cents for every dollar raised. This team works hard to ensure your gifts are appropriately managed and put to work as you have intended.

We would like to take the opportunity to recognize the service of Michael E. Marks who served on the Enloe Foundation Board of Directors for 22 years.

Mike was born at Enloe Medical Center and lived nearly his entire life in Chico. His deep affection and appreciation for his hometown was felt by friends, acquaintances and family alike. He will be dearly missed.

repaired his damaged arm, but his exceptional care did not end there.

During his stay, Enloe case managers worked with him to remove barriers to his safe discharge. Arming him with resources, he was able to get back to his hometown and family. This opportunity helped change the trajectory of his life. He found a safe place to live, a job to support himself and the will to keep his life on track for the long term.

Finding the right resourcesEnloe’s case managers excel at breaking down barriers for a safe transition out of the hospital, according to Case Management Director Michelle Evans and Assistant Manager Amanda Wilkinson. From Despair to Hope Navigating the Path to Healing

A young man arrived at the Guest Services desk one cloudy afternoon to donate to the hospital.

The caregiver behind the counter called the Enloe Foundation, asking if someone could walk over to assist. Micah Browning, advancement relations coordinator, answered, and walked across the Enloe Park to meet this person who also had a story to tell.

Recalling his last visit to Enloe, the man shared that in the previous year he had been living on the streets of Chico. Without a job or a home, he felt swallowed by despair, unable to see his way forward, when an unexpected path opened for him.

Suffering a severe injury to his arm, he arrived at Enloe Medical Center’s Emergency department, where he described being treated with kindness and concern. Surgeons

problem-solving focus, knowing which resources can be accessed for various patient needs. Whether they are tackling issues with insurance coverage, clearing hurdles related to price-prohibitive medications, transitions to rehab or skilled nursing facilities, transportation or living conditions, Enloe case managers are adept at finding the right resource for the right situation.

“It’s so gratifying to be able to pull a rabbit out of the hat to get a patient exactly what they need when they need it,” Michelle said.

Removing obstacles from the path to healing and recovery can lead to a safe, successful discharge from acute care in a myriad of ways.

“Sometimes, providing access to a single resource can create a domino effect, allowing the patient to move past that one hurdle they couldn’t overcome by themselves,” Amanda said. “In other cases, we can just improve the patient’s life in that moment, and that’s important, too.”

Helping to change patients’ outcomesOne particularly critical resource available to Enloe case managers, when all other resources have been exhausted, is the donor-funded Compassion Fund. Created with flexibility in mind, it can be used to meet patients’ individual needs, be it to help purchase medications, alleviate safety concerns after discharge, assist

with transportation for continuing treatment or any reasonable need case managers identify in their daily work with patients.

Both Michelle and Amanda report that this fund gives caregivers across the organization peace of mind because they know it’s available when needed and can help change patients’ outcomes.

Generous support of the Compassion Fund at Enloe Medical Center quietly and efficiently helps hundreds of patients every year – just as it did for the young man who visited Enloe to donate.

“I want to start paying forward for the kindness and care I received,” he said as he handed Micah a generous cash donation. “Nobody treated me like a homeless guy, but everybody treated me with respect and helped me get my life back. I’ll never forget them.”

the disaster that hit our community. The focus turned to our employees, partner employees, volunteers, providers and patients impacted by the Camp Fire. The Foundation raised over $1 million for Camp Fire relief, with donations coming from locals and people across the nation. To date, the Foundation has granted over $600,000 for basic needs such as food, housing and clothing. The effects of the disaster are far from over. The Foundation continues to receive requests for ongoing needs as the community recovers.

Your Foundation is one of the most effective fundraising organizations in the region. This means a greater proportion of each dollar raised is used to meet the medical needs of our community. In support of your charitable objectives, we hope you continue to choose the Enloe Foundation. Remarkable Efforts

The Enloe Foundation is an integral partner to Enloe Medical Center. It provides needed funding for projects and medical services that are vital to our community.

Over the years, the Foundation has raised millions of dollars to support the medical center, enhancing health care access for the underserved and underinsured in our

community, supporting education and training for our medical professionals, and helping deliver state-of-the-art services, medical equipment, and facilities.

This year, the Foundation closed the campaign for the Cardiovascular Care Center by exceeding its pledge of $5 million. This $20 million project will be completed in the coming year, providing more treatment areas, new technologies and expanded services, improved patient access, and a dedicated family lounge.

Cardiovascular Care CenterWe did it! The Enloe Foundation is pleased to report you and hundreds of other generous donors across our region have collectively raised cash and pledges to meet the $5 million goal for the new Starmer Cardiovascular Care Center at Enloe Medical Center. Thank you for the role you played in this success.

Heart & Sole: Run for WellnessThis year’s fifth-annual Heart & Sole: Run for Wellness raised over $28,000 with 736 registrations and 19 sponsors. This event, featuring a 5K run and 1-mile walk, provides an opportunity for individuals and families to engage in fun activities designed to inspire healthy lifestyle choices.

Enloe Foundation Golf TournamentLast year’s event raised a phenomenal $134,090 and proceeds went to support our Cardiovascular Care Center Campaign and the Golf Tournament Nursing Scholarship Fund, making possible two sizable scholarships. Since 1986, this annual tournament has raised over $2.4 million to support Enloe’s programs, equipment and facilities.

Give Where You Live With over 1,000 employees, volunteers and medical staff contributing to the Give Where You Live campaign, we raised over $326,000 this year compared to $279,862 last year. Our participation rate increased to 32% from 28% last year.

May 31, 2019 Give Where You Live Caregiver Giving CampaignEnloe caregivers came out for a fun-filled day of celebration for our giving event held in the medical center’s newly constructed park. In addition to the rally held on the main campus, we hosted mini-rallies at several of the satellite campuses. This event celebrates employees, physicians, and volunteers who are current donors and welcomes others to participate.

every three years, he cherishes the opportunity living in Chico has given him to “sink his roots deep.” Supporting Enloe is one of many ways Bob has done this.

Dedicated caregivers like Alice, Mary and Bob help make Enloe what it is today.

We are honored for their investment in our community’s health, and we are honored to be a part of their history and future.

Honoring the Past & the Future

Bob and Mary Evans have a lengthy and inspiring history with Enloe Medical Center. In fact, Mary gets tearful when describing why she and her husband chose to serve patients far into the future by including the Enloe Foundation in their will. “It’s two-fold,” she said.

Giving began as a way to honor her mother, Alice Starmer. Many of Mary’s memories of her mom are interwoven with Enloe.

Alice was a dedicated volunteer and employee. She led by example, teaching her family the value of our local, community hospital.

Mary describes her as having a wonderful way of inspiring others to join her. She went on to joke that her mom “could get money out of a turnip.”

Mary’s second why is rooted in her own involvement with Enloe. As she become more involved through her work on the medical center’s Cardiovascular Care Center and Gala Committees and her participation in Enloe’s Women in Touch events, she felt a desire to help Enloe “grow, shine and be top notch.”

Like his wife, Bob wanted to honor Alice, as he felt his mother-in-law was a positive influence for him. He also recognizes the important role Enloe plays in our community. After serving 20 years in the U.S. Air Force and living in a different community
