at the 2020 Beast of the Bench

2020 BEAST OF THE BENCH R.A.W. United’s Northwest contingency, led by Dr. Mitch Thornton, held their second successful powerlifting contest on December 12, 2020. Here are the results from Mitch: With everything going on with the Covid 19 restrictions and this being a “Bench Only” contest, we were impressed with the turnout. We had 15 lifters and saw some impressive benches. We split the lifters into two flights. Flight A consisted of men 181 pounds and below and all the women, while 198 pounders and up comprised Flight B. WOMEN’S REVIEW Our ladies Master lifter, Heather Dorr, was competing in her first meet at the young age of 51. Roseann Jezerinac could not travel from Washington to Idaho due to Covid 19 protocols for her employment in the health care field. Being as we want to support our first responders, we allowed her to compete remotely from Seattle using video feed. Mariah Miller was our lady’s Best Lifter; this was her first powerlifting contest as well.

We had two law enforcement officers, Darin Boyd and Cody Bloomsburg, and we thanked them for their service during these difficult times. Father and son Seth Brown (17) and Heath Brown (50) battled it out in the 165s, with Heath pushing 255 and Seth posting a state record 225 pound bench. The 220 pound class also had a battle, with Philip Miller taking top honors over “Superman” Jake Enthos.

POWER FEATURES:

2021 RULES CHANGES

As we quickly approach the 2021 powerlifting season, lifters need to be aware of rules changes that will go into effect on January 1, 2021. First, and most noteworthy, are the rules of performance for the bench press. As of January 1, 2021, lifters will no longer be permitted to have their head off the bench and/or lift on their toes. As you will hear in all 2021 Rules Clinics, the head, shoulders, and buttocks must remain in contact with the bench and feet must remain flat on the floor throughout the movement. The rationale for this “change” is to return to the rules of performance that governed the Federation at its inception, as well as the sport itself when first established. In addition, lifters will no longer be permitted to utilize elbow sleeves; lifters may utilize neoprene knee sleeves, wrist wraps, and a belt. Of course, singlets must be non-supportive, and groove briefs are not permitted. Furthermore, Meet Directors are being highly encouraged to conduct equipment checks at registration; please be advised there will be mandatory equipment checks at all State Championship, Regional Championship, and Federation Championship events beginning on January 1, 2021. The rationale behind these changes is to ensure increase the potential for consistency as the Federation expands into states across America. We encourage everyone to review the updated R.A.W. United Rulebook at: https://stronglife610.net/r-a-w-united-rules/. Please feel free to call (321-505-1194) or email ([email protected]) us if you have any questions.

2021 FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIPS:

AN OVERVIEW OF THE INAUGURAL

2021 R.A.W. UNITED FEDERATION CHAMPIONSHIPS

With State Chapters established in Florida, Idaho, Massachusetts, and Washington, we are STOKED to host our first-ever Federation Championships beginning on Thursday, July 29 and running through Sunday, August 1, in Viera, Florida!

Page 19: STRONG LIFE · 2021. 1. 2. · Girls Gone Strong lifters having fun in the warm-up area . Girls Gone Strong youth lifters Ashley Polacek (66 pound class), Natalie Norcross (77 pound

And with restrictions from the China virus still governing many states (and the future unknown), we have coordinated with State Chapters to host their annual State Championship events the same weekend, and we will virtually link in everyone to be a part of the Federation Championships. Of course, lifters from outside the state that travel to Florida can be a part of the “live” competition. The meet venue at Viera Charter School has been reserved from Thursday, July 29 through Sunday, August 1 to accommodate Florida lifters and those who are able to travel. Lifters competing in their home states will be able to set State Records and will be included in the overall results. Those that compete in Florida will establish the framework for Federation Records since we will have Federation Judges officiating the event. Additionally, State Referees that travel to Florida to lift can also take their Federation Referee’s exam.

We will be working with State Chapters over the next several months to coordinate the both the live and virtual aspects of the event. Our plan is to have live feeds in each state so lifters can watch the competitions occurring across the country in real time. More information will be shared in the April issue of STRONGLUIFE. Please feel free to call (321-505-1194) or email ([email protected]) us if you have any questions.

CHALK & CHURCH:

PROVERBS 16:3

“COMMIT YOUR WORKS TO THE LORD, AND YOUR PLANS WILL SUCCEED.”

Scripture teaches us that the wisdom of the world is foolishness to God but the wisdom of God is life and health to those that obey Him. That said, if we could take this simple instruction found in Proverbs 16:3 to heart and carry it out to completion, we would be walking in the way of the Lord, living in spirit and truth, and realizing God’s will in our lives.

Page 21: STRONG LIFE · 2021. 1. 2. · Girls Gone Strong lifters having fun in the warm-up area . Girls Gone Strong youth lifters Ashley Polacek (66 pound class), Natalie Norcross (77 pound

Every believer is called upon to commit his works and activities unto the Lord, but all too often we discover ourselves trying to carry out the works that He has prepared for us to do in our own strength and not in the power of the Holy Spirit. God will never carry out His plans and purposes in the strength of our former selves. God has purposed to carry out the works and activities of our lives through our new lives in Christ - our new, born-again nature. With expansion efforts underway and our first-ever Federation Championships in the not-so-distant future, it is critical to prayerfully move forward as both a powerlifting federation and ministry. Remaining focused on Christ and committing all we do to His glory will allow us to realize our mission of becoming America’s premier Christian powerlifting federation. Jesus taught that where our treasure is, there our hearts will be also. Our hearts must remain not on PRs or monetary profits, but on Christ. Tony Conyers and I have reminded each other of this simple truth since R.A.W. United’s inception in 2007, by always reciting the following truth to each other every time we meet at the platform: “it’s not about powerlifting, it’s about people.”

The girls from Viera Charter School are part of R.A.W. United’s Christian ministry

REMEMBER,

IT’S NOT ABOUT POWERLIFTING, IT’S ABOUT PEOPLE!

WHAT’S NEXT:

THE APRIL 2021 ISSUE OF STRONG LIFE

The April issue of our STRONG LIFE newsletter will cover both the 2021 Girls Gone Strong Women’s Open and the 2021 Pacific Northwest Regional Championships and spotlight teams competing in both events. We will also inform you on our progress with regard to the Federation’s expansion efforts and showcase our State Chapter Leaders. Additionally, we will preview upcoming events and update our contest schedule to include newly added meets for the 2021 powerlifting season. Finally, we will examine Proverbs 27:17: “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another” in our Chalk & Church column. Until then, stay strong in the Lord and we look forward to seeing everyone on the platform! God Bless, Spero
