Welcome to Tonight’s Performance

We fi ll our lives with music and we share it with others.

The Strings Attached Orchestra (SAO) is a member driven, community string orchestra made up of over 30 adult am-ateur musicians devoted to bringing music into the lives of the musicians and community alike.

Under the baton of Ric Giorgi, Strings Attached plays repertoire from the 17th century to the 21st, from classical music to popular hits, jazz and ev-erything in between! Whether we learned to play a string instrument as a child or took it up as an adult, we share a love for playing music and a desire to keep growing musically. We rehearse weekly from September to June, and perform around Toronto for hospitals, community centres, retirement homes, and for our friends and family. Ask any of us and you’ll hear how important being part of this group is to our members and how much richer it has made our lives – musically and beyond.

The Strings Attached Orchestra is a not-for-profi t registered Canadian Charitable Organization. We are active in the amateur musician and or-chestra communities and are a member of Orchestras Canada and CAM-MAC (Canadian Amateur Musicians – Musiciens Amateurs du Canada). We are strong believers in the importance of community orchestras and the positive impact we can make.

We are grateful for the opportunity to play and perform together, and we thank you for attending our concert. We hope you enjoy tonight’s concert and we hope to see you again soon!

The Strings Attached Orchestra is a registered charitable organization whose goals and vision are to bring musicians together and help them grow within themselves and through good deeds within the community. Part of our

mission is to help bring music into the lives of musicians and the community alike. An integral part of our schedule is playing 4 to 6 outreach concerts within the community in places such as retirement homes, hospitals, community centres and child care centres. There is no better feeling than knowing that you have brought music into the hearts and souls of those who may otherwise not be able to get out to these types of concerts. These concerts also widen the horizons of chil-dren in the important early years of development. In July we hope to perform our fi rst library concert at summer programs for youth and children.

You can help us with our mission in a number of ways. Any feedback you can send us that can help promote our concerts or any leads you can suggest to groups, institutions or venues that would benefi t from our performances is important to us and appreciated.

As well, any suggestions you might have that can lead us to potential sponsors or donors would be invaluable to us. Fund-raising is simply a fact of life for arts organizations and makes possible the existence, continued development and the enhancement of what we do best - bringing enriching musical experiences to members of our community who would otherwise not have these.

Do you play a string instrument?Come play with the Strings Attached Orchestra next year!

If you play the violin, viola, cello, or bass, and are interested in joining a group, we invite you to contact us, and we look forward to hearing from you! Our season runs from September through June. New members are welcome to join at any time.

Email us at [email protected] or contact us through our website at www.stringsattachedorchestra.com.

Our Conductor Writes

The Strings Attached Orchestra would like to thank Ric Heinl and our Founding Sponsor George Heinl & Co.

Your generousity has helped bring this orchestra from an idea into a reality!

What a remarkable season this has been!

Any new venture is challenged with unknowns; crises, hurdles, nev-er-ending things-to-do and a steep learning curve. Running and managing an or-chestra, not just logistically, but musically, is no different. Strings Attached Orches-tra was born in the summer of 2014, and despite all the above, we have not just survived, but thrived; an accomplishment to be celebrated.

And that is what we hope you will do with us tonight.

I have worked the orchestra very hard this year, much harder than I had origi-nally planned. All of the members have day jobs, families, and other activities and/or responsibilities. But I sensed from our fi rst rehearsal on Septem-ber 8th, 2014 that raising the bar of the repertoire we would work on and perform was a direction this group de-served. Strings Attached Orchestra is made up of talented and dedicated am-ateur musicians whose devotion to the music and the other SAO members never fails to elicit respect and admiration from our audiences across Toronto.

We have worked on and performed almost 30 musical works from the Baroque period to the contemporary. As a result, every member has not only advanced their skills and expanded their musical horizons, we also have been able to provide quality live music performances for communities across the city, often for people who otherwise would not have been able to have the experience, running the gamut from day cares to nursing homes. Our Community Concerts have been so successful, in fact, that we have been asked back to all of these facilities and been invited to others.

Tonight, we look forward to playing for those nearest and dearest to us, and on behalf of Strings Attached, I hope you enjoy our Friends and Family Concert, cele-brating the end of our inaugural season! We would be very pleased to hear your comments on this evening’s concert and hope to see you at one of our commu-nity concerts next year.

Making music with others, for everyone to enjoy, is the reason the Orchestra not only exists, but has grown, gaining a stable foothold on Toronto’s music scene.

I want to both congratulate and thank the members of the SAO, the President Ruth Levenstein, Vice President Bonnie Wasser, Secretary Sarah Heller and the other board members, Ivan Lavine and Claire Morris as well as all the other mem-bers whose work makes the orchestra possible and made this fi rst year the amaz-ing success it has been.

Thank you for joining us this evening, and being part of our success.

The members of the Strings Attached Orchestra would like to thank you for joining us for tonight’s performance. We hope you enjoy the concert

and we look forward to playing for you both tonight and in the future.

Ricardo (Ric) Giorgi

Ricardo (Ric) Giorgi is a busy Toronto jazz bassist, pianist, singer and the con-ductor and co-founder of the Strings Attached Orchestra. In 2014, Ric and a group of devoted string players decided to start the new Strings Attached

Orchestra, with a vision of building a member driven and musically inspired com-munity orchestra.

Ric’s earliest musical training was in a choir run by nuns in a refugee camp in Northern Italy. In Canada, he started playing fl ute in high school and soon add-ed the string bass and piano. He joined the Erindale Strings and worked his way through the University of Western Ontario Faculty of Music playing with the best musicians in London, Ontario.

Ric’s conducting studies included programs at The Conductors Institute at the University of South Carolina Orchestra, the University of Tennessee Symphony Orchestra, and Orchestra Zlin Czech Republic. He conducted or co-conduct-ed various levels of ensembles for the Scarborough and Toronto District School Board Music Camps, the Scarborough Schools Symphony Orchestra, and the Con-cert Orchestra, including gala performances at Roy Thompson Hall. He has con-ducted the Brampton Symphony Orchestra, the Timothy Eaton Memorial Orches-tra, the Main Street United Church Festival Orchestra and orchestras assembled for corporate functions in and around Toronto and Buffalo, New York. He led the very successful Rainbow Gardens Jazz Orchestra from “basement band” status to international acclaim. After taking early retirement from the Toronto District School Board, where he was an Itinerant Strings Specialist for almost 20 years, he became the founding conductor of the Resa’s Pieces Strings for four wonderfully successful seasons.

Ric has composed music for fi lm and television and contributed to various CBC and CTV productions, including one episode from the program “The Earth” that won a Peabody Award for Science Education. He was commissioned to write the UNICEF Canada campaign song.

Ric says, “I love all music and I love helping others experience the joy that making it brings to both them and their audiences. Each week I get to stand before musi-cally inspired adults who put aside work, family and other cares to join together to make beautiful music out of thin air. What could be more awesome than this? – Nothing, period.”

Programme NotesBrook Green Suite (Prelude) - Gustav Holst, 1933Written for St. Paul’s Girls’ School junior orchestra for strings, the Brook Green Suite consists of 3 movements. The name of this piece is thought to originate from Brook Green, the place of Gustav Holst’s wedding to his wife Isobel in 1901, and because of the close proximity of the brook to the school. This piece is composed in a more traditional idiom than most of his later pieces.

TV Themes - RJD2, Jeff Beal, John Lunn, 2007-2013 arrangement by Charles HellerTV Themes is a medley including The Mad Men Theme, a short edit of the instrumental “A Beautiful Mine” written by American musician by RJD2 and released in 2006, which became famous after it was used as the theme song for the hit show Mad Men (2007-2015), the House of Cards Theme (2013), nominated for Outstanding Music Composition for a Series (Original Dramatic Score) and Outstanding Original Main Title Theme Music, and Downton Abbey, “Did I Make the Most of Loving You?”, written by Scottish composer John Lunn for the hit television series Downton Abbey.

Theme from Schindler’s List – John Williams, 1993John Williams, who frequently collaborates with Steven Spielberg, composed the score for Schin-dler’s List. The composer was amazed by the fi lm, and felt it would be too challenging. He said to Spielberg, “You need a better composer than I am for this fi lm.” Spielberg responded, “I know, but they’re all dead!” It is one of the most recognized contemporary fi lm scores, and won an Acad-emy Award and BAFTA Award for “Best Original Score” and the Grammy Award for “Best Score Soundtrack for Visual Media”. In the fi lm, Itzhak Perlman performs this theme on the violin.

Symphony No. 9 in E minor, “From the New World”, Op 95 (Allegro Molto / Largo) - Anton Dvorák,1893Although it is often said that Dvorák used Native American and African American music in this symphony, he said this about it, “I have not actually used any of the [Native American] melodies. I have simply written original themes embodying the peculiarities of the Indian music, and, using these themes as subjects, have developed them with all the resources of modern rhythms, counterpoint and orchestral colour. The Largo was adapted into the spiritual-like song, “Goin’ Home”.

Montreal - The Honourable Donald J. Johnston, P.C., O.C., Q.C. arrangement by R. Zaldivar, R. GiorgiWritten for his friend, the great Canadian fi lm-maker Paul Almond, this is an “homage” to Montreal by former Cabinet Minister and head of the OECD, Donald J. Johnston. We are proud to perform the orchestral premiere of this poignant and yet celebratory music. We are grateful to Mr. Johnston for the opportunity to do so.

Karliner Niggun (subtitled “Kah Echsof” A Sabbath Afternoon song of the Hasidim of Karlin) - arrangement by Charles HellerThere is a strong Jewish tradition of singing songs of prayer and psalms throughout the Sabbath. The tunes vary by region and each tune brings with it a cultural signifi cance and meaning specifi c to the area from which it hails. This piece is an arrangement of a traditional Hasidic tune (‘niggun’), sung by the Hasidim of Karlin (Lithuania). Recently, one of SAO’s members had the opportunity to spend a Sabbath in Krakow, Poland. Little did he know that just a few days prior was the yartzeit (anniversary of the passing) of Rav Elimelech, one of the founders of Hasidism. Tens of thousands of Hasidic Jews from around the world came to visit the grave in Lejensk, and many of them spent the following Sab-bath in Krakow. During the Sabbath meals, the Hasidim sang many unfamiliar tunes, but when the Karliner Niggun started, our orchestra member impressed his hosts by joining the song in full voice.

Concerto for 2 Violins and Cello, L’estro Armonico, Op. 3, Concerto No. 11 (Allegro - Adagio e Spiccato - Allegro / Largo e Spiccato / Allegro) - Antonio Vivaldi, 1711Some wag once said that Vivaldi didn’t write 600 concertos - he wrote 20 concertos 30 times. Though not true, this one is not of those molds and remains a favourite of string players and au-diences of The Red Priest’s opus. The 2nd movement is a form of the Siciliano, the most famous of which is that from Corelli’s Christmas Concerto.

Pavane pour une infante défunte (Pavane for a Dead Princess) - Maurice Ravel, 1899Written for solo piano by the French composer Maurice Ravel when he was studying composition at the Conservatoire de Paris under Gabriel Fauré, Ravel also published an orchestrated version of the Pavane in 1910. The critic Émile Vuillermoz complained that Ravel’s playing of the work was“unutterably slow”. However, after a performance by Charles Oulmont, Ravel mentioned to him that the piece was called “Pavane for a dead princess” not “dead pavane for a princess”. When asked how he arrived at the title “Pavane pour une infante défunte” Ravel smiled coyly and replied, “Do not be surprised, that title has nothing to do with the composition. I simply liked the sound of those words and I put them there, c’est tout”.

Pennsylvania 6-5000 - Jerry Grey, 1939If you have a long distance plan and are so inclined, try dialing Pennsylvania 6-5000 (that’s old English for (212) 736-5000 and yes! - it’s still the phone number of the Hotel Pennsylvania in New York City! The number was so well known by big band players that they turned it into this hit song by Glenn Miller and his Orchestra. If you call, please tell them we’re promoting them here in Toronto so the orchestra would appreciate a booking discount when we make our New York debut ;-)

Solace (A Mexican Serenade) - Scott Joplin, 1909 arrangement by Charles HellerYou will probably recognize half of this wonderful arrangement by our principal violist. It is Joplin’s only work in the tango rhythm. The Tango, originally from Cuba via the African cultures, was known by its African tribal name, ‘Tangana’. As early as 1860, Louis Moreau Gottschalk’s ‘Souvenir de la Havane’ used this rhythm. A hugely popular dance from its fi rst reported instance in a rag-tango, called ‘The Dream’, composed and played by an itinerant African American player Jessie Pickett at the Chicago World’s Fair in 1893, is one of the ancestors of popular music as we know it today.

Beatles Forever (Lady Madonna, Michelle, Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band) - John Lennon and Paul McCartney, 1965-1968The songs from this medley, from the most creative period in the Lennon-McCartney songbook, won numerous Grammy Awards and No. 1 spots on the Album Charts. Among the accolades given these songs, Time Magazine declared “a historic departure in the progress of music” and the New Statesman praised its elevation of pop to the level of fi ne art. In August 1966, the Beatles perma-nently retired from touring and began a three-month holiday in India and from recording and started their own label, Apple Records.

Lady Gaga Fugue - Stefani Germanotta, Nadir Khayat, 2009 This Fugue is based on the hit song Bad Romance by the brilliant artist Stefani Joanne Angelina Ger-manotta, better known by her stage name Lady Gaga. The song is an example of her diverse con-tributions to the music industry via her self-empowering messages, fashion, and live performances with artists from different genres. With global album and single sales of 28 million and 140 million respectively as of April 2015, she is one of the best-selling musicians of all time.

Thank You to our Guest ArtistsCharles Heller (composer) graduated from Cambridge Uni-

versity and furthered his studies with Marjan Mozetich. He is an associate member of the Canadian Music Centre (www.musiccentre.ca) and is the author of the award-winning “What To Listen For in Jewish Music” (www.ecanthuspress.com). He has worked with leading musicians including Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach,

Marvin Hamlisch and Rivka Golani, and is especially pleased to compose and ar-range for Strings Attached Orchestra, which has given him insight into writing for strings in general and keen amateur musicians in particular.

Cor Klamer (piano) is a gifted and much sought after solo pianist but works with his own Cor Klamer Trio along with

drummer Phil Myers and bassist Ric Giorgi. Since retiring as the organist at Central United Church he has become the go-to keyboard player when a piano sub is needed. He has toured with June Garber in Cuba and Florida and has played in most of East-

ern Canada and the United States. Cor’s combination of amazing sight-reading and the ability to play by ear in any key and change to any other almost instantly is rare among musicians.

Patrick Merner (double bass) is a classically trained contrabassist and media composer. Patrick took up the

bass as part of a TDSB itinerant music program in grade 6. He has studied at McGill University and Humber College. When not playing with the Strings Attached Orchestra he is often sequestered away in the studio or performing his works live on

the new music scene or in Dance and Electronica clubs. He is the driving force behind the Indie group Poshley Slums. However, he doesn’t believe in letting go of his roots and is very proud to continue the orchestral tradition with the SAO.

Phil Myers (percussion) is one of the most versatile percus-sionists in the GTA, working with both small groups and big

bands. He has been a regular at Trane Studio, Reservoir Lounge, Gate 403, Lula Lounge and many other venues. He was chosen to perform with Barry Harris and Charles McPherson at a Ko-erner Hall concert where one veteran jazzer said of him “Phil

is one of the few drummers around who listens, blends and drives at the same time - he’s great!”.

Thank you all very much for your support of the Strings Attached Orchestra!

An orchestra may be nothing without the musical endeavours of its members, but like every other organization, it takes money to make it all happen. The Strings Attached Orchestra is a charitable organization, and though a large part of our operating budget comes from member-ship dues, for the balance, we rely on the kindness and generosity of our corporate sponsors and private donors.

We’d like to extend a special Thank You to all of our Sponsors and Donors for helping make this season so successful and for making it possible for us to bring music into the community!
