2018 SUMMER MUSIC FESTIVAL STRING GUIDELINES & AUDITION REQUIREMENTS Please see page 2 for Symphony Orchestra STRING ORCHESTRAS & NORTH STRINGS AUDITION REQUIREMENTS String Orchestras (Central Campus) includes four levels of orchestra; North Strings includes three levels of orchestra. A student’s Spring Audition determines their acceptance into their desired program and preliminary orchestra placement Auditions at each session’s orientation session determine final orchestra level placement. Please note that preliminary orchestra placement will not be shared with students or parents. Spring Audition Requirements Two solo works in contrasting styles; these may be a movement from a sonata or a concerto, or an etude of your choice. All-Region audition music, UIL Solo solos, and pieces from method books (i.e. Suzuki) are also acceptable. Your music choices should demonstrate current playing level and shifting ability (as appropriate). Please prepare no more than 1 page of each piece. Applicants should prepare scales based on their ability using the chart below; they will be asked to indicate what scales they will play to the judge during the audition. AUDITION REQUIREMENTS: Symphony Orchestra (Strings) Eligibility Note: 8th grade string players who were in the Camerata orchestra in the summer of 2017 are eligible to audition for Symphony; final placement will be determined after the audition • Two solo works in contrasting styles; these may be a movement from a sonata or a

concerto, or an etude of your choice. Please prepare no more than 1 – 11/2 pages of music from each piece. All-Region/All-State audition music and UIL Solo music is acceptable.

• A two or three octave major scale of your choice. Scales must demonstrate shifting.
