Read the material you have been given and take note of the points to remember.

Read the scenario about Josephine and from it, place the strengths you identify as a key worker in to the blank Strengths Assessment.

Take some time to randomly hear from the group about what they have identified and recorded.

Run through the PowerPoint to demonstrate how Josephine actually did it, along with her goal outcome.

Goal Outcome:

Priority 1. “I want to keep living where I am”.

Josephine asked to borrow a lawn mower and garden tools from Mr and Mrs Taylor.

In return for the loan she mowed the lawn and tended the garden at Mr and Mrs Taylor’s house.

Josephine told them that she wanted to stay living in her cottage, and offered to tidy their house too.

The Taylor’s were very grateful, and reduced the rent that Josephine paid.

Page 11: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Priority 2. “I want to cook like Mrs Taylor”.

Mr and Mrs Taylor insisted that Josephine came for a meal on Sunday nights at the Taylor home.

Josephine agreed, but asked if she could arrive early to assist Mrs Taylor with the preparation.

Josephine was now in the position to be instructed by Mrs Taylor, and learn to cook from the person she admires

Page 12: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Priority 3. “I want to join a rock and crystal club”.

Josephine had cemented her relationship with Mr and Mrs Taylor so much, that she was relieving Mr Taylor from driving Mrs Taylor to town to do the shopping, Josephine purchased her own groceries at the same time.

Josephine had investigated the rock and crystal clubs, and became interested in one in particular.

One day whilst in town with Mrs Taylor she organised a meeting with the President of the club and joined.

Mr Taylor said Josephine could use the car to attend club meetings on the first Tuesday evening of every month.

Page 13: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Priority 4. “I want to buy a car”.

Due to Josephine having her rent reduced she could save towards a car, also, she only had to budget for 6 meals a week instead of 7, which was a further saving.

Mr and Mrs Taylor were about to update their car, and offered to sell their current car to Josephine.

Instead of saving towards it, Josephine was paying Mr and Mrs Taylor directly to pay the car off.

Josephine was able to have a car sooner.

Goal By Product Achievements:

Although some things in the future wishes department of any domain are not placed as a priority at the bottom of a strengths assessment, 3 things can happen.

• Josephine made some friends

• Josephine reduced her anti-depressant

2. A person could decide they are not relevant any more

3. They could be placed on the priority list eventually, in which case you will be working with the person in the goal planning sessions

1. They may be achieved as a by product of a goal achievement, eg, in the case of Josephine, two by product achievements exist:

Page 15: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Priority 1. “I want to keep living where I am”.

Goal analysis:

Although managing financially, Josephine had little money left to herself.

Josephine used the strengths identified in domain 3 of the strengths assessment to keep both gardens.

Josephine also used strengths from domains 1, 3 and 6 to help in the Taylor house, and had her rent reduced

Page 16: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Goal analysis:

Priority 2. “I want to cook like Mrs taylor”.

By helping to prepare the meal, and learn from Mrs Taylor, Josephine was able to achieve her goal.

Josephine didn’t say “I want to learn to cook better”, or “I want to join a cooking class”, she said “I want to cook like Mrs Taylor.

Therefore, Mrs Taylor had to be her tutor.

Josephine used strengths identified in domains 1, 3, 4 and 6

Page 17: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Goal analysis:

Priority 3. “I want to join a rock and crystal club”.

Josephine recognised the opportunity to meet with the President of a club she had investigated.

Josephine used the strengths she identified in Domains 3, 4 and 6

Page 18: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Goal analysis:

Priority 4. “I want to buy a car”.

Josephine had proven to Mr and Mrs Taylor to be helpful, reliable and responsible.

Josephine used strengths she had identified in

domains 1, 2, 3 and 4

Exercise Critique::

It would be rare that such a big and flowing outcome would come from one meeting with a Key Worker.

However, consider this:

If by being creative in your goal planning sessions with each other (client and key worker) such a big outcome can come from a first strengths assessment, imagine how simple it would be to produce a small outcome from a number of sessions.

Naturally, if certain steps don’t pan out, then a break down of options to be explored is needed.

Page 20: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Exercise Purpose:

• To demonstrate the use of community resources

• To demonstrate the use of positive language

• To demonstrate the use of person’s own language

• To demonstrate that the person setting a goal is the person utilising their own strengths

Page 21: Strengths 20 Assessment 20 Polytech 1 (2)

Exercise Point Checks:

If a client agrees to writing their own strengths assessment, then that is the ideal. In this case Josephine did this.

Josephine and her Key Worker had explored options (short term steps), in a setting Josephine had set. In this case it was somewhere near an art display.

• Josephine set the pace

• At all times her Key Worker inspired hope for Josephine

• The goal plan was taken from her priority list using the future wishes (centre of strengths assessment).
