John will celebrate a Mass of Thanksgiving next Sunday, March 17, 2019 at 9:00am Fr. John, thank you for your many years of priestly service. Congratulations on your retirement. We are very happy that you will be staying with us for many more years. May you enjoy the rest of the journey that God has planned for you! STRENGTH AGAINST TEMPTATION The first Sunday of the season of Lent always includes a Gospel account of the temptation of the Lord Jesus in the desert by the devil. The Gospel story is set in the desert. As believers, we know that temptation comes our way in our own gardens of delight as well as the deserts of our lives. As Lent begins, our attention is drawn to that temptation within each of us to become like God—we want control, power, and answers to all of life’s difficult questions. As communities of faith, we are given this season of repentance so that we can join our hearts with others on the difficult journey of conversion. We look to God and to one another for strength against temptation.

  • What Should I Do For Lent? Pope Francis’ 10 Tips

Every year Catholics try to answer the age old question: What should I do for Lent? Well, who better to pick for as your Lenten spiritual director than Pope Francis? He has some great ideas for you!

Here we selected 10 of his best tips:

“[Lent] is a powerful season, a turning point that can foster change and conversion in each of us. We all need to improve, to change for the better. Lent helps us and thus we leave behind old habits and the lazy addiction to the evil that deceives and ensnares us.”

    Do something that hurts

“Lent is a fitting time for self-denial; we would do well to ask ourselves what we can give up in order to help and enrich others by our own poverty. Let us not forget that real poverty hurts: no self-denial is real without this dimension of penance. I distrust a charity that costs nothing and does not hurt.”

    Don’t remain indifferent

“Indifference to our neighbor and to God also represents a real temptation for us Christians. Each year during Lent we need to hear once more the voice of the prophets who cry out and trouble our conscience. God is not indifferent to our world; he so loves it that he gave his Son for our salvation.”

Pray: Make our hearts like yours!

“During this Lent, then, brothers and sisters, let us all ask the Lord: ‘Fac cor nostrum secundum cor tumm’: Make out hearts like yours (Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus). In this way we will receive a heart which is firm and merciful, attentive and generous, a heart which is not closed, indifferent or prey to the globalization of indifference.”

    Take part in the Sacraments

“Lent is a favorable time for letting Christ serve us so that we in turn may become more like him. This happens whenever we hear the word of God and receive the sacraments, especially the Eucharist. There we become what we receive: the Body of Christ.”

    Prayer

“In the face of so many wounds that hurt us and could harden our hearts, we are called to dive into the sea of prayer, which is the sea of God’s boundless love, to taste his tenderness. Lent is a time of prayer, of more intense prayer, more prolonged, more assiduous, more able to take on the needs of the brethren; intercessory prayer, to intercede before God for the many situations of poverty and suffering.”

    Fasting

“We must be careful not to practice a formal fast, or one which in truth ‘satisfies’ us because it makes us feel good about ourselves. Fasting makes sense if it questions our security, and if it also leads to some benefit for others, if it helps us to cultivate the style of the Good Samaritan, who bends down to his brother in need and takes care of him.”

    Almsgiving

“Today gratuitousness is often not part of daily life where everything is bought and sold. Everything is calculated and measured. Almsgiving helps us to experience giving freely, which leads to freedom from the obsession of possessing, from the fear of losing what we have, from the sadness of one who does not wish to share his wealth with others.”

    Help the Poor

“In the poor and outcast we see Christ’s face; by loving and helping the poor, we love and serve Christ. Our efforts are also directed to ending violations of human dignity, discrimination and abuse in the world, for these are so often the cause of destitution. When power, luxury and money become idols, they take priority over the need for a fair distribution of wealth. Our consciences thus need to be converted to justice, equality, simplicity and sharing.”

    Evangelize

“The Lord asks us to be joyous heralds of this message of mercy and hope! It is thrilling to experience the joy of spreading the good news, sharing the treasure entrusted to us, consoling broken hearts and offering hope to our brothers and sisters experiencing darkness.”

You probably won’t be able to take huge steps forward in all of these areas. Instead, pick a couple that stand out to you and try to find practical ways to grow in your love of God and your love of your neighbor.

  • “Helping Build Up the Domestic Church”

What is the “Domestic Church”? The term “Domestic Church” refers to the family, the smallest body of

gathered believers in Christ. Though recovered only recently, the term dates all the way back to the first century AD. The Greek word ecclesiola referred to “little church.” Our Early Church Fathers understood that the home was fertile ground for discipleship, sanctification, and holiness. Are you and your family saints in training in your own “little church”? Your answer should be YES! Visit the Office of Faith Formation for more information on training to be saints! Upcoming Sessions Adult Confirmation – 3/12, 3/19, & 3/26 RCIA – 3/13 session, 3/17 Rite of Calling & dismissal and Rite at the Cathedral, 3/20 session, 3/24 Mass & dismissal, 3/27 session. Catholic Faith Facts Apologetics Class ... will be on hiatus during Lent so as not to coincide with the University Series. We will resume classes after Easter. A schedule of upcoming classes will be posted in the Bulletin as the date nears.

Would you like to be ready with Biblical answers to what Catholics really believe? Have you ever wondered “Why do we Catholics do that”? Would you like to share the faith in a dynamic way? Then this is the place for you! Sessions meet every other Wednesday at 7:00pm in Room 9 of the School. Come and fortify your armor (Ephesians 6:13-17) so you will “Always be ready to give an explanation to anyone who asks you for a reason for your hope” (1 Peter 3:15). “Is it Jesus that you seek when you dream of happiness; He is waiting for you when nothing else satisfies you” Pope St. John Paul II

Missionary Disciples Needed Do you have a love of the sacraments, especially Baptism? Is God calling you to “go

make disciples”? Are you willing to sacrifice 5 or 6 hours a month to help hand on the faith you love to the next generation? Please prayerfully consider joining our Baptism Preparation Team. We will help you with formation and provide you with everything you need to serve in this ministry. Do not be afraid! R.C.I.A. Rite of Sending Each year, on the First Sunday of Lent, Parishes celebrate the R.C. I. A. “Rite of Sending”. The Rite of Sending offers the parish community, through their Godparents and Sponsors, an opportunity to acknowledge the spiritual progress the Catechumens and Candidates have made, and send them forth to our Archbishop, with assurance of our Parish’s care and support. Across the world, Catholic Bishops welcome to their Cathedrals, Catechumens (unbaptized) and

Candidates (already baptized), sent by local parishes, to gather together with their Godparents and Sponsors, in what is known as the “Rite of Election” on March 10th for Catechumens and the “Rite of Calling to Continuing Conversion” on March 17th for Candidates. In Sacred Scripture, the Book of Revelation makes reference to a “Book of Life” in which are written the names of those who have chosen to follow Christ and be baptized. We, who are already baptized, had our names written in the Book of Life at our Baptism. In the Rite of Sending, those preparing for Baptism are invited to come forward and sign the “Book of The Elect,” as a sign of their desire to be numbered among the chosen of God. So we, the Parish Community of St. Rose of Lima Church, today, at the 9 AM Mass, will Send our Catechumens and Candidates to Archbishop Jose Gomez. We are asked to continue to pray for them as they enter into the final period of preparation for their Full Initiation into the Catholic Church at the Easter Vigil Celebration.

  • Did you Know? Trained adults can take

The Protecting God’s Children program is in place to raise awareness about behaviors of adults that may indicate a threat to the safety of children and young people. Through this program, trained adults learn how to prevent abuse from happening, in part by taking steps to eliminate suspicious behaviors, such as being alone with a young person. Creating a culture of openness and transparency goes a long way towards alleviating concerns of inappropriate behavior by adults, and helps children feel safe in their environment.
