How to implement the AIU Media Library

and Discovery Streaming into your

classroom

What is the AIU Media Library• The Media Library contains over 17,000 VHS

and DVD titles and 7,000 streaming media titles. The collection is updated continually, with an average annual replacement figure of 10% of the total, nearly 1,000 titles.

• The Media Library serves all 42 public school districts in Allegheny County, as well as higher education institutions, parochial and private schools, and various cultural organizations.

Why Use Video in the Classroom?

• Video can breathe meaning and life into nearly any lesson• To provide a common experience for all students• To generate interest and stimulate imagination• To offer a different perspective or another approach to a topic• To connect students with a faraway place• To stimulate the development of critical thinking skills• To equalize educational opportunities• To enhance self-respect and break down social stereotypes• To promote critical viewing skills and media awareness• Video can be a powerful tool for meaningful learning; it all depends

upon you.

Preparation

• The key to using video effectively is preparation.• Before viewing, preview the video for

appropriate content, and review related print and Web materials, especially the Teacher’s Guide that may accompany a video series. Determine whether you will use the entire video or only relevant segments to illustrate objectives in your curriculum. Remember: even a few minutes of video can be very powerful.

During the video

• During viewing, give students a focused viewing assignment, such as something they are responsible for remembering or writing down from the video. Press

“pause” often to identify and clarify what the students are watching. Try using closed captions with English-language learners.

After-Viewing Ideas for Younger Students

• Turn to Your Neighbor: In pairs, have students explain something about the video program to each other. This can also be done by asking a follow-up question to a video program for students to discuss with each other.

• Tea Party: While viewing the video, have students write down two interesting facts they learned from the program. Afterwards, have students walk around to each other, exchanging their interesting facts. Students will be reminded of many facts through this process.

• Quick Write: In a journal, have students write quickly for two minutes to record any thought that comes to mind after viewing a program.

• Four Corners: Choose four main concepts or topics in the video and label each corner of the room with one of the concepts. Ask the students to choose a corner that matches a topic they wish to explore. Plan an activity for the students in each corner and have them share their findings with the class.

All usernames start with the same 3 numbers which identify Propel. The next3 numbers identify which Propel school you are from. The last 3 numbersidentify your personal account. ( this is your last 4 of your SS#)

Place a key word into the search box. For this example, I chose BUGS.

From here, you can see how many items were found. Some of the options Ordering video tapes, or directing you to united streaming.

If you want to select a video tape:

•Select the appropriate box.•Then hit the ORDER tab.

At the order screen:• Confirm your titles• Check delivery and use dates.

Final Confirmation before order is placed.

•Confirm email address•Click Finish to order your title(s)

Delivery dates for materials

McKeesport, East, Homestead, and Andrew StreetHigh School will all receive deliveries on Tuesday.

Montour will receive deliveries on Thursday.

Materials are signed out for 2 weeks and will be in a white bag in the office. If materials are needed forlonger amounts of time, just sign them out again. Once you are finished, return the materials to the bag.

Orders must be placed within 2 days of delivery dates.

Example: Montour must place orders by Tuesday afternoon to receive them on Thursday. Other schoolsmust place orders by Friday afternoon.

For Discovery Streaming, click on the box.

It should direct you to your video.
