STRATEGY AT A GLANCE

financial results

The Board is targeting disciplined growth across all businesses in the period to 2018. Detailed in the half year report, the strategy is expected to more than double FY13’s profit before tax and earnings per share by 2018.

PARTNERSHIPS REALIGNMENTTHE RENEWAL of the Partnerships business plan has placed an increasing emphasis on securing land-led mixed tenure opportunities - partnering with Registered Providers (RPs) and others in joint ventures which spread risk but also increase returns on developments. To assist with this greater focus on Partnerships’ role as a developer it has now been realigned within the Housebuilding Division.

In addition to increasing its exposure to mixed tenure work, Partnerships remains strongly committed to growing the size of the direct contracting business with RPs and anticipates activity will increase as we approach the end of the latest incarnation of the Affordable Homes Programme in 2015.

Reflecting the expertise, resources, support and focus that the Group wants to give the Partnerships Division, Chief Executive Greg Fitzgerald has assumed Executive Board responsibility for the Division and the financial performance of Partnerships is now reported under Housebuilding. This will also assist shareholder understanding and help the Group to gain full credit for its affordable housing offering.

The Property Services business, which delivers building repair and maintenance services for residential developments, has been realigned to form part of the Partnerships Division. This enables Property Services to leverage the knowledge and experience of the Partnerships Division within affordable housing to create new business opportunities with Registered Providers and local authorities.

TAKING OFFICE IN READINGA LANDMARK OFFICE BUILDING for M&G Real Estate and Bell Hammer is being constructed by Galliford Try Central London under a £38m contract.

The contract for Forbury Place will see the creation of 185,000 sq ft of Category A office space in the first of two new office complexes on the site of the former Energis House in the town.

The eight storey building will target a BREEAM "Excellent" rating and provide an additional 450 parking spaces which will service both buildings on completion.

Rock & Alluvium will deliver piling works over two phases at Forbury Place. This will involve the installation and testing of more than 700 piles, up to 24m deep.

LAND PURCHASE FOR 5,500 HOMES COMPLETELINDEN HOMES has successfully completed the purchase of its largest ever site, with a gross development value of £1 billion, as part of a consortium of developers, of which we have a third share. The life of this site is expected to be circa 15 years and delivery will commence during financial year ending 2016.

The acquisition of the site near Plymouth gives Linden a share of a 5,500 home scheme, enabling it to build circa 1,700 homes. Sherford will be designed as a traditional Devon market town with a town centre, high street, market square and three neighbourhood centres. It will have a strong focus on quality and

energy performance. The overall project has been supported with an investment of

up to £32m from the Homes and Communities Agency and at least 550 of the first 2,750 homes will be affordable housing.

Andrew Richards, Group Managing Director of Housebuilding, commented: “We are delighted that the plans for Sherford have taken a major step forward following the formal consolidation of this land into our consortium. This is an excellent scheme which will deliver a significant boost to the local economy and we look forward to starting on site with our consortium partners soon.”

ONE OF LONDON’S most deprived housing estates, the Aylesbury Estate, situated in Walworth, south east London, has been overhauled by Galliford Try.

Designed by award-winning architects Levitt Bernstein, the £8.1m contract, recently completed by Galliford Try Partnerships South East, forms part of an ambitious 20 year regeneration programme titled “The South West Corner Regeneration” for development partner L&Q.

Site D, the second phase of works to be undertaken on the estate, comprised the new build construction of 60 homes within three finger blocks, providing one and two bedroom apartments and four bedroom maisonettes. The mixed tenure scheme features 44 new homes for private sale, 13 for affordable rent and three for shared ownership.

The development’s former residential buildings consisted of imposing, high-rise blocks, low-rise flats and concrete walkways. Today, the part-regenerated Aylesbury Estate comprises attractive, high quality and spacious new homes, housed in predominantly low-rise buildings, ranging from two to 10 storeys.

The South West Corner Regeneration programme has, during the course of the last two years, attained several accolades. The scheme was recently described by judges as being “calm, rational, coherent and robust" and will act as an exemplar for future development within the London Borough of Southwark.

POSTER TEAM FOR WATER HYGIENEPROTECTING CUSTOMERS' WATER SUPPLY is imperative for Scottish Water and Morrison Construction Water has been leading the way in good practice.

Willie Aitken, Technical Manager, said: "We have really tried to help our teams to be crystal clear on compliance with the correct procedures and behaviours. For example we have set up highly visible cleaning stations and information boards. We have sticky step decontamination mats, which capture and remove the last traces of contaminated particles on the soles of shoes, as well as a portable hygiene kit for teams on the move.”

Morrison Construction has also produced a range of attention-grabbing posters to highlight contamination risks and remind everyone of the correct procedures. These have now been adopted by other contractors on Scottish Water sites.

Tell us about the Elgin FAS (Flood Alleviation Scheme):The Elgin FAS is the single largest flood alleviation scheme in Scotland to date and the largest ever

civil engineering project in Moray, with an overall construction value of circa £50m. When complete, the project will protect 600 homes and 250 businesses from flooding, coping with 190 tonnes of floodwater per second - something that is expected once every 200 years.

What type of works are you undertaking to deliver this level of flood protection? We are building set-back flood embankments and new reinforced concrete floodwalls at several

locations throughout Elgin; a flood relief channel opposite Elgin Cathedral; a new diversion channel to move the Tyock confluence approximately 1.5km downstream, and we are constructing flood plains to increase flood storage capacity. Three bridges are also being constructed. Old Red Bridge will be replaced by Lossie Wynd Footbridge; Brewery Footbridge will be extended to span the new flood relief channel opposite the cathedral, and Pansport Bridge will be replaced with a new double-span twin arch bridge.

What are the biggest challenges you have faced to date? Unforeseen volumes of asbestos that were buried decades ago and discovered during the

demolition of an industrial estate. This was dealt with by a specialist contractor. The project also has a high profile locally as it affects a large number of individuals, businesses and groups. Community consultation has therefore been a crucial part of the scheme. This has involved close liaison with schools and local organisations, for example engaging Greenward Primary pupils to undertake a site visit and competition to draw a picture of Pansport Bridge. The winner was selected by the public who attended a two-day site exhibition at the local library.

What do you enjoy about working on this scheme? The scale of the scheme and the variety of work. It involves major bridge construction, heavy

civil engineering, roadworks, earthworks, and river diversions. It's a civil engineer's dream! A super project for young engineers to learn the trade.

PLAYING TO THE GALLERYDesigned by Stirling Prize-winning signature architect Zaha Hadid, the Grade II listed Magazine Building, a former 1805 gunpowder store in Kensington Gardens, has been transformed into a new cultural attraction.

Seamlessly combining old and new structures, it provides

gallery and exhibition spaces, a restaurant, office space and a concept store within a BREEAM "Very Good" rated building. As with the neighbouring Serpentine Gallery, entry to the new facility is free of charge and public engagement and cultural learning are a key focus.

"The Environment Agency, the officers and men and women of the Royal Logistics Corps 4LSR from Dalton Barracks, Abingdon and civil contractors Galliford Try completed the works in a remarkable three days. They were wonderfully professional and friendly. We have nothing but praise for them all."

Maggie Rawcliffe,Chair, South Hinksey Parish Council,

comments on the construction of a temporary barrier around the village to help prevent flooding.

WEATHERING THE STORMAS FRAMEWORK PARTNER OF THE ENVIRONMENT AGENCY, Galliford Try Civil Engineering has been helping to minimise the impact of flooding across southern England following severe weather. Working as GBV, a joint venture with design partner Black and Veatch, the team has worked around the clock, seven days a week liaising at national level and working on the ground to propose and deliver solutions to reduce flood risk. The challenge has required considerable mobilisation of personnel, materials and equipment including the acquisition and use of a 28 inch pump from Europe, all at very short notice.

In addition Galliford Try proposed a temporary flood defence system to protect the village of South Hinksey near Oxford from rising flood waters. GBV is continuing to work with the Environment Agency and other supply chain partners both to supervise the dredging works proposed for the Somerset Levels as well as look at ways to protect the villages from future flood events.

FALKLANDS PENGUINS IN A FLAPA NEW FACILITY FOR INJURED WILDLIFE has radically improved the process of caring for and rehabilitating wildlife in the Falkland Islands.

Mike Butler, Regional Manager for Morrison (Falklands) Limited and a Falklands Conservation member and volunteer said: "For every person in the Falkland Islands there are at least 350 penguins alone. This means that in the event of a wildlife emergency where injured wildlife requires assistance, resources are stretched.”

Recognising this Morrison (Falklands) Limited, which has been the construction partner of the Falkland Islands Government for the past decade, supported the construction of a wildlife facility for Falklands Conversation by preparing the site with concrete foundation blocks, and craning building units into place.

SAVED FROM A CAT-ASTROPHEA POORLY CAT who jumped out of a delivery vehicle at Galliford Try Civil Engineering's South Devon Link Road was safely returned to its owners thanks to the quick-thinking project team.

Surprised staff attempted to catch Rusty, but the feline, who suffers from a cancerous condition and has a weak immune system, sprinted off into a field.

After a cold night out on his own, Rusty was coaxed out by Public Liaison Manager Tracey Waygood who arrived on site equipped with cat food.

Owners Tracey and Paul Quantick said: "We’re so grateful to everyone at Galliford Try, they were brilliant."

LEAPING TO THE RESCUEHUNDREDS OF TINY FROGS were seen to be coming across the insurmountable barrier of a curb on their way to grasses and the river following a heavy downpour.

The Galliford Try Civil Engineering team at the Ladybridge Weir fishpass scheme in Staffordshire, came to their assistance. Helped by the public, they

rescued many of the frogs and provided sandbags to enable others to make the

jump up the curb, back on their natural paths.

Greg, who commenced his career as an apprentice, spoke to employers about what is involved in providing apprenticeships and the benefits apprentices can bring to businesses.

The Group itself also recognises that while the construction industry relies on skilled trades, apprenticeships have become less common, contributing to a worsening skills shortage among young people. The Group therefore aims to provide 500 subcontractor apprenticeships by 2016 and, together with its subcontractors, has already recruited more than 100.

Galliford Try is also sponsoring the new South Devon University Technical College which will offer a new way of learning for up to 600 young people aged 14 to 18. Its focus will be on engineering, water and the environment reflecting both the natural environment in Devon and the needs of local employers in these industries, including Galliford Try, as there is a lack of technicians available.

WORKING OFF THE FATGALLIFORD TRY WATER has been working with Morrison Utility Services as MGJV to fight the fat in Kingston town centre where an enormous "fatberg", the size of a London bus, was discovered. Fatbergs form when people put cooking fat, wet wipes and other things they should not down their sinks and toilets which then create blockages in the sewers. The MGJV team is doing a great job clearing the sewer.

THROW THE FISH A LINEFISH AND EELS in the River Sowe in Warwickshire are able to swim upstream for the first time in more than 60 years as a result of a fish pass that has been installed by Galliford Try Civil Engineering on behalf of the Environment Agency.

The structure will sustain and improve fish populations by reducing the speed of the water and increasing its depth to allow for improved fish migration to spawning grounds. It will also help fish and eels to find food supplies and take refuge from predators.

Distinctive oversized chimneys reflect the quirky characteristics of many surrounding homes and the vernacular architecture of the immediate area. Externally, the homes use locally sourced red and orange brickwork, clay or slate

coloured roof and hanging tiles and contrasting black painted timber framing surrounding traditional white framed windows.

The houses range in size from 2,050 sq ft to 4,730 sq ft and are perfectly suited for the busy, executive family with flexible, contemporary layouts.

Close to highly regarded schools, Swallowhurst is a short distance from Cranleigh’s bustling village centre, which combines a mix of high street names with excellent local amenities including boutique shops, bars and restaurants.

The homes at the first phase of the development range from £885,000 to £1.775m, the latter being Linden's highest ever priced home and most exclusive property sold to date.

"We are delighted that Optimum Schools has been recognised through this award, which is one of the highest accolades achievable within the education sector. It is fantastic recognition for all involved and we look forward to furthering this success."

Michael Buchanan, Education Director for Galliford Try.

ON FORM AS "SCHOOL BUILDER OF THE YEAR" SCOOPING “SCHOOL BUILDER OF THE YEAR” at the Education Investor Awards 2013, the most prestigious event in the education sector, Galliford Try's "Optimum Schools" concept is earning growing recognition.

Meeting the challenge of building “cost effective, great schools at pace” which was set by the Education Funding Agency and James Review (2010-11), the idea uses design standardisation of key components and off-site manufacture to maximise cost and time savings while allowing an individual response to a school’s circumstances.

Award judges praised the Group’s commitment to delivering excellence and innovation through this approach, in addition to its investment in research and development.

The first fully Optimum School building in England is a two-storey 900 sq m block accommodating science and general classrooms at Hillview School for Girls, in Tonbridge, Kent. Building costs were around 30 per cent lower than national benchmarks and the construction period was 19 weeks, compared with 32 weeks for a traditional build.

INFRASTRUCTURE PROJECT OF THE YEARTHE WEST RHYL COASTAL DEFENCE Scheme managed by Galliford Try Civil Engineering for Denbighshire County Council was named “Infrastructure Project of the Year” at the tenth annual Builder & Engineer magazine awards.

The scheme involved rebuilding inner and outer harbour walls to protect 2,000 homes and 500 businesses against a 1 in 200-year storm.

Judges were impressed with how Galliford Try integrated its supply chain to source 53,000 tonnes of locally-quarried stone for the works.

The team was also praised for its strong focus on local engagement which involved liaison with local residents, businesses and schools, and saw more than 1,000 people

attend the on-site visitors’ centre. In addition, the scheme directly boosted

the economy through employing more than 90 per cent of site workers from within 10 miles and ensuring local unemployed people were kept aware of vacancies.

Earlier this year, the scheme won the “George Gibby Special Award for Public Engagement” at the ICE Wales Cymru Awards 2013, and also scooped "Engineering Project of the Year" at the Association for Project Safety National CDM Awards.

INNOVATION AWARD FOR SINCLAIR MEADOWS

Claiming the award in the “Innovation” category was Galliford Try Partnerships North’s scheme Sinclair Meadows, the UK’s first carbon negative social housing development. The eco exemplar project was recognised for “the culture change” the properties had achieved and the “magnificent data” being produced.

Banbury Flood Alleviation Scheme by Galliford Try Civil Engineering with Black & Veatch received the “Highly Commended” award in the same category.

HERITAGE AWARD FOR BRISTOL OLD VIC

The Bristol Old Vic Redevelopment by Galliford Try Building South West won the “Heritage Award” for ”the achievement of high standards in the repair, reuse and revitalisation of historic buildings” while showcasing “evidence of research… consideration of alternative options, choice of appropriate procurement route…application of well-considered and sympathetic technical solutions and delivery of quality and enduring outcomes”.

The project entailed the reconfiguration and rejuvenation of the Grade 1 listed Bristol Old Vic theatre, one of the finest examples of a Georgian theatre still in existence.

The winners were selected from a shortlist of organisations which won regional Constructing Excellence awards.

RAISING THE BAR IN H&STHE INFRASTRUCTURE BOARD’S Working Group for Health, Safety and Environmental is making good progress in achieving its aim of sharing and utilising best practices from within the industry.

Commencing with a Culture Survey across the Infrastructure sites, the group identified short, medium and long term objectives to improve the Division's HS&E Performance. These have included an innovative “interactive site induction board”, IT based training of the BMS HS&E standards and procedures, capturing lessons learned and best practice that occur across the Division and sharing these with awards of £250 given for the best initiatives.

Pictured above: Barry Rourke and Graham Younger from subcontractors Groestar Electrical demonstrating the benefits of the Site Angel at the GBM Safety Stand Down Day.

SITE ANGEL BOOSTS SAFETYA PORTABLE, LIGHTWEIGHT SAFETY STATION which can be deployed in less than 20 seconds has been developed and introduced on site by Galliford Try Infrastructure Security Site Supervisor Adam Costello.

Constructed of fibreglass, the "Site Angel" is set on castor wheels and can be pushed into location very easily, making it ideal for larger sites where there is a significant distance between welfare facilities to work areas. The Site Angel can also be used to control specific risk areas such as excavations, hot works, refuelling and hazardous substance stores as well as being used in public areas to display site information. The unit is waterproof and lockable in the closed position, thus protecting the contents if left on site or unattended.

The new health and safety invention, which has been highly commended by clients, is being trialled on various Galliford Try Infrastructure Security sites.

sustainability updateGroup Sustainability Manager Gareth Rondel outlines how we have committed to a number of new initiatives that will drive forward improvements in supply chain, our approach to community engagement and lowering carbon emissions.

What is the Supply Chain Sustainability School? An online learning forum designed to help the construction sector

assess and improve its knowledge of sustainability issues within its supply chain. The School provides supply chain partners and employees with access to learning resources which they can use to better equip themselves to deliver more responsible solutions.

What does this mean for our Group? We manage numerous supply chain risks: ensuring we receive

the right materials from suppliers, that our subcontractors are financially stable and deliver safely, and that our projects meet the required standards and functions. We have committed to using

the resources of the School to assess and improve the performance of our own supply chain partners, and use this to improve our own performance too.

What does this mean for our supply chain?Preferred Group Suppliers and the wider supply chain will be asked

to sign-up to the School. They will then receive an assessment of their needs and a customised development plan.

Who will drive this initiative?

This will be driven by Group Procurement, supported by

Health, Safety and Sustainability, with Infrastructure being the first Division to begin the engagement process with supply chain partners.

PLEDGING SUPPORT TO THE INFRASTRUCTURE WORKING GROUPTHE GREEN CONSTRUCTION BOARD is a consultative forum for government and the UK design, construction and property industry leading the change to a low carbon economy. Galliford Try has pledged to support its Infrastructure Working Group which has identified the opportunities for clients and contractors to deliver more efficient, lower carbon infrastructure and help the UK meet its growth and environmental commitments.

A fuller summary of the pledges and our support can be found on: The Intranet > Group Services > Corporate Responsibility.

GROUP LAUNCHES VOLUNTEERING POLICYGALLIFORD TRY has launched a volunteering policy that will allow employees to apply to take up to two days of paid leave per year for the benefit of a good cause or the communities we are working with.

As well as providing positive outcomes for communities, this structured approach to volunteering will promote the development of employee skills and further demonstrates the Group’s commitment to being a responsible business where people are proud to work, and making a positive impact in communities.

Guidance on how you can apply to take volunteering leave through Oracle can be found on the intranet.

opening up the industry to allLast year, 16 of our sites welcomed schoolchildren and students through their doors to provide a glimpse of what goes on behind the scenes on major construction sites and outline the career opportunities on offer. Six months on, we visit those sites to find out how they are keeping up the ethos of Open Doors.

STUDENTS WELL PLACED AT CHAPEL HOUSETWO SUCCESS STORIES came out of the Open Doors event at the Chapel House site in Newcastle upon Tyne where Galliford Try Partnerships North is building a purpose-built primary health care centre.

When Jordan Dixon attended the event at the Chapel House site with his father, the team learnt that his work placement had fallen through at the last minute. Site Manager Ian Marshall and HR Advisor Debra Phillips came to the rescue by offering him work experience on site. Jordan, who is pursuing an apprenticeship in joinery, subsequently spent three days working with the team's joiners at Chapel House, gaining real experience of the trade within a live construction site.

Ian said: "We were delighted to have been able to provide Jordan with this opportunity. He was very keen and enjoyed himself very much. After the placement, he came back to site with some cake to thank all of the team for supporting him."

Debra added: "The Open Doors weekend was perfect for showing young people around our site and letting them know more about what we do. It was nice to see so much interest in construction and we hope to maintain the links we have

developed with schools, colleges and individuals as a result of it."

WHY WE TAKE PART IN OPEN DOORS

FANTASTIC FIVE WIN PRIDE IN JOB AWARDHOMEBUYERS can rest assured of the quality of Linden's homes after five site managers were awarded NHBC (National House-Building Council) Pride in the Job Quality Awards.

Paul Mott (Linden Homes Midlands), Steven Meeking (Linden Homes Chiltern), Jerry Dawkins and Rob Baker (both from Linden Homes South West), and Marc Carlton (Linden Homes North) were seen to display the utmost care, professionalism and attention to detail in their work over a year. Laurie Bray, who worked for Linden Homes Guildford, also received the award.

The site managers beat off fierce competition to win the award, which recognises the best in the industry, with only 450 Pride in the Job winners from a shortlisted 13,000.

Having received the award for two years running, Paul was particularly pleased with his win. He said: "I am delighted to have reached this stage in the competition for a second year running, and as a site manager I feel it is important to go that extra mile to ensure the quality and overall appearance of a development. Much of that is down to the whole site team, so these are awards we can all be proud of."

TIME, KNOWLEDGE AND INSIGHT will be gained by employees using inside Knowledge a searchable database designed to improve access to information, share knowledge and best practice across the Group and speed up information retrieval times.

The portal can be found on the intranet and contains case study information on previous and current projects, awards, innovation and much more. It is already a strong and diverse resource, updated on a daily basis. The database is powered by a sophisticated management system which can search thousands of files in less than a second, giving users information at their fingertips. Speedy document retrieval also reduces the time taken to locate relevant experience, improving efficiency, accuracy and quality.

Knowledge Manager Dawn Smith, who has been heavily involved in the

development of the resource, explained: "Ask anyone within business development what they need more of, and it will inevitably be time, knowledge and insight - especially when working to tight deadlines. Galliford Try has no shortage of experience across an extraordinary range of sectors and specialisms, but we have struggled to share this information through the company. After analysis, consultation and development of a solution, we have created inside Knowledge specifically for employees."

She added: "As the portal grows, it will become a critical business tool, assisting in the distribution of high quality, best practice information, ultimately increasing our bid success rate."

WOOD DEAL FOR ALLBY ENGAGING ReBuild North East to collect waste wood from its Tynedale Drive site in Blyth, Galliford Try Partnerships North is helping to create jobs while reducing its carbon footprint. ReBuild collects timber and ensures as much as possible is reused while building the skills of formerly unemployed people.

"BEE-ING" GREENA SURREY BEEKEEPING CENTRE was pleased to receive excess timber, shuttering ply and insulation from Galliford Try Building South's Park Royal team. Blackhorse Apiary, which specialises in the education and support of suburban beekeepers, used the ply to build mini hives (nucs) to breed new bee colonies, and created new hive stands with the donated timber. After a harsh winter last year when many bee colonies died during the cold, the insulation was of immense value, keeping the new bee colonies warm over the cold winter months.

taking root inthe community

STUMPING UP MATERIALSDURING SITE CLEARANCE WORKS on the A45/A46 Tollbar Scheme, Galliford Try Civil Engineering had an unusual request from one of the Trustees at the Guy's Cliffe Walled Garden Trust, namely to provide a number of tree stumps to create a stumpery in the walled garden they are restoring.

The Trust, with help from the Warwickshire Conservation Volunteers and ARC - who provide support to community projects, is recreating the Victorian Kitchen Garden as it would have been in the 19th Century. The garden will be used as an educational and historical facility for schoolchildren and the wider community, with the produce being sold locally.

Stumperies were not necessarily found in kitchen gardens, but they were invented by the Victorians.

Barry Meatyard, Chairman of the Trust, said: "When we've finished clearing the site, these tree stumps will look terrific in a particular part of the garden, which may not be suitable for vegetables. It would have taken us ages to collect together all these stumps and we can't thank Galliford Try enough for delivering them as well."

The team has also assisted the nearby Electric Railway Museum with donations of timber which will be used by the museum to both create fencing and upgrade visitor facilities.

Evolve finds out how several sites have been have been supporting local organisations with donations of materials and minimising waste in the process.

Foreman Stevie Sutherland was also nominated for the award for gifting an excavated bolder to a local resident who appreciated its beauty and wished to make it a focal point in his garden.

"BEST OVERALL PERFORMANCE with Emphasis on Contracting" from Strathclyde Civil Engineering Contractors’ Training Group was given to Morrison Construction Graduate Engineer Kim Mair. To mark the achievement, Kim was invited to lunch with the Group to receive prize money and books.

OUTSTANDING EFFORTS from Richard Sumner (Galliford Try Building North) and Colin Jones (Galliford Try Building South) led them to being shortlisted as finalists in the 2013 Construction Manager of the Year Awards.

Focusing on the skills and expertise of construction managers, the awards are judged by industry leaders and becoming a finalist is a huge accolade.

RISING STAR Grant Sloggie was presented with the Institution of Civil Engineers' Shield for "Best Civil Engineering Student" in Final Year, at UHI Inverness College Awards Ceremony. His efforts were noted as being exceptional. Grant is based at the Forres Findhorn Site. Having successfully gained a HNC in Civil Engineering, he is going on to study HNC in Quantity Surveying on block release basis.

FOND FAREWELL TO ROSEMARYAN EMOTIONAL SEND-OFF marked the end of an era at the Shared Service Centre (SSC) when Development Director Rosemary Wood retired after 25 years of service.

Friends and colleagues joined Rosemary at an office lunch and presentation where she received gifts from her many friends and colleagues in the SSC including an iPad mini, which Rosemary – being a gadget fanatic – immediately used to take photos around the office.

Rosemary joined the Group in 1988 as Temporary Accounts Clerk and then became Financial Controller of Galliford Midlands. She was appointed to set up the SSC in 2003 and was pivotal in its growth and development over the 10 years it has been operating. In her retirement Rosemary will be relaxing with the many handcrafts that she enjoys, and also planning for a house move to the South West when her husband retires.

BRIDGES TO SCHOOLSDRESSED IN HARD HATS and high visibility vests, more than 200 primary school pupils took part in the construction of a 12m long model of a cable-stayed bridge with help from the Forth Crossing Bridge Constructors’ Community Liaison Team.

The event, which was inspired by the Institution of Civil Engineers’ “Bridges to School” initiative gave participants an insight into the challenges of civil engineering while having some fun along the way. Pupils found out all about bridges, the new Queensferry Crossing in particular, in addition to health and safety, teamwork and civil engineering.

BUILDING BRIDGES IN EXMINSTERPUPILS FROM EXMINSTER PRIMARY SCHOOL in Devon learnt all about housebuilding materials, as part of the national curriculum, during a visit to Linden Homes South West's popular Milbury Reach development.

Teacher Tina Roberts said: “The pupils loved getting dressed up in the safety gear and learning about the different methods of construction. The project manager was really patient and explained to them the process of building a home and the materials they used…it’s been a wonderful experience for them.”

Robert Baker, Project Manager, added: “We were thrilled to have the children visit our site - we have so many different types of materials to hand, it’s the perfect place for them to learn about this topic. The visit also provided us with a great opportunity to talk to pupils about site safety which is very important to us.”

GETTING FIRED UP FOR CHARITYFUNDRAISING at Linden Homes South West heated up a notch when Commercial and Technical Director Jason Knight took a walk on the wild side.

Taking part in a firewalk to raise money for Children’s Hospice South West, Jason braved five metres of hot coals, which averaged 800°C, raising more than £1,000.

The organisation, which is Linden Homes South West’s charity of the year, has three hospices near St Austell, Barnstaple and Bristol. They provide support to families with children with life-limiting or life-threatening conditions and help to build precious memories.

Jason said: "The firewalk was amazing, I managed to convince my wife to take part too and I’m thrilled at how much money we raised. It was really interesting to visit Little Bridge House and see the valuable work that they do.”

GOING THE EXTRA MILE GALLIFORD TRY PARTNERSHIPS SOUTH EAST sponsored development partner Notting Hill Housing (NHH) £3,000 in a bid to help raise funds for the charitable campaign “50:50” which allows tenants living in poverty to access emergency hardship funds.

The challenge required 12 NHH employees to cycle from London to Paris and overall raised in excess of £100,000 for the campaign.

NHH Director of Development Ed Badke said: “Galliford Try has a well deserved reputation for ‘going the extra mile’ so we were delighted when they agreed to sponsor our 250 mile London to Paris cycle ride. The cycle ride was all about hard work and stretching yourself – much like the Galliford Try approach to business. Thanks once again for your generous sponsorship.”

HELEN SWIMS THE ENGLISH CHANNELBRAVING STRONG WINDS and one of the biggest spring tides of the year, Regional Environmental Manager Helen Beveridge swam the 23 miles of English Channel from Dover to Sangatte in France raising more than £2,000 for Chest Heart and Stroke Scotland.

Setting off from Dover in the pitch dark at 8.30pm, Helen spent 19 hours and 27 minutes being guided by her pilot Neil Streeter on his boat Suva, dodging ferries and tankers in the world's busiest shipping lanes. Low sea temperatures, jellyfish and floating ship and cargo wreckage added to the physical challenges of the swim.

"Swimming the Channel was undoubtedly one of the best experiences I have had the privilege to enjoy and the memories of that day will remain with me forever," she said. “Seeing the sun rise after 10 and a half hours of swimming in darkness was a particularly special moment.”

Helen now hopes to tackle the 23 miles of Loch Ness in August. According to the records, this is a swim only 10 people have achieved to date. In June 2013 Helen swam a Channel relay to raise money for Aspire, a spinal injuries charity. In total she has raised more than £5,000 for the two charities.

I have been continually impressed and touched by the way that every single contractor has conducted themselves whilst on site. Noise has been kept to a minimum, and my young 16-month-old son has absolutely loved waving to your crane driver Ashley Pope who deserves a special mention for his friendly patience with his fan club! Please can you pass on my grateful thanks as a resident to all on the site. We will genuinely miss them when the job is done.Nicola Pugh, commenting on Linden Homes Western's Chantry Road development.

SSC'S PINK FRIDAYPINK FRIDAY is a fundraising event that the Shared Service Centre (SSC) takes great pride in contributing to every year, as two employees within the SSC have suffered with and beaten breast cancer. Previous fundraising efforts have seen the team raise sums of money around the £500 mark, however this time, the SSC successfully raised more than £700. The idea is to wear pink for the day, which some members of the team took to extremes by being sponsored to dress up as pink fairies. Others members chose to make and sell cakes, and a raffle contributed significantly to the total. It was a fantastic day and well worth the giggles. Thanks go to all involved.

A NOTE OF THANKS TO CHANTRY ROAD TEAM

DID YOU KNOW?Helen was one of only 100 people to successfully swim the Channel solo in 2013. The fastest swim is a little over seven hours and the slowest nearly is 27 hours, making Helen's efforts quite impressive.
