Strategic Prevention in Kings County JOIN THE TEAM! Organizational Partnership
WHO WE ARE Kings Partnership for Prevention (KPFP) is a local coalition whose partners come from throughout the
community representing a wide variety of interests. The VISION of KPFP is to create an environment of
wellness throughout our communities. The MISSION of KPFP is 'to proactively engage our
communities by supporting, participating in and creating opportunities for healthy life choices for all
county residents.’ KPFP has an overarching focus on HOLISTIC health – understanding that the
comprehension of the parts of something is intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to
the whole.
WHAT WE DO Using the National Prevention Strategy, KPFP has developed seven active workgroups that cover all
priority areas: Kings County Tobacco Free Partnership, Kings Coalition for Wellness and Awareness,
Reproductive and Sexual Health Workgroup,
HEAL (Healthy Living Active Living) Workgroup,
Mental and Emotional Well-being Workgroup,
Kings County Asthma Coalition, and Substance
Use Prevention Workgroup. In addition, KPFP
has helped lead the charge in the following
initiatives:
• County-‐wide Data Driven Website
• County-‐wide Community Needs Assessment
• Community Engagement Project
KPFP is continually working to build a healthier
Kings County by:
• Promoting a Trauma-‐Informed Approach to Prevention
• Building Capacity through all sectors of the community
• Focusing on Collective Impact
WHY WE SERVE Using public data and our own Community Needs Assessment, KPFP understands that Kings County
residents suffer within all of seven priority areas of prevention. The 2018 SocioNeeds Index by Healthy
Communities Institute is a measure of socioeconomic
need that is correlated with poor health outcomes. All zip
codes and counties are given an Index Value from 0 (low
need) to 100 (high need), and the selected locations are
ranked from 1 (low need) to 5 (high need) based on their
Index Value. In Kings County, the highest community of
need (by zip code) is Stratford, ranking at 99. Four other
zip codes rank between 94 and 98 (Avenal, Corcoran,
Kettleman City, and Armona), Hanford ranks at 82, and
the lowest community of need is Lemoore ranking at 68,
which is still significantly higher than most American
communities. A coordinated and collective approach is necessary to create positive change. KPFP uses
strategies that move the prevention effort further ‘upstream,’ targeting factors that create early childhood
experiences that in later life manifest in unhealthy behaviors and outcomes.
DATA DRIVEN KPFP partners with the Healthy Communities Institute (HCI) to offer a county-wide data driven website.
HCI’s web-based information systems are designed to empower communities to make a true difference
by tracking health and quality of life indicators and supplying over 2,000 community-level interventions
and policy models. The HCI systems provide local communities with a range of features that support
health improvement planning and evaluation. This includes a dashboard of 150+ data indicators (many
down to the zip code and census tract) that are continuously updated to help identify areas of need with
up-to-date views of community health. The systems provide the community with a “living” and publicly
accessible source for the most currently available health and quality of life indicators.

GET INVOLVED The goal of the Healthy Eating/Active Living workgroup (HEAL) works to empower community partners with knowledge
and skills to advocate about healthy living, thereby helping to create
an environment where the healthier choice is the easy choice.
The Kings Coalition for Wellness Awareness (KCWA) works to foster a
comprehensive, participatory, and collective effort to eliminate violence in Kings County.
Awareness initiatives include Human Trafficking, Victim’s Rights, Elder Abuse, and
Domestic Violence.
The Substance Use Prevention workgroup works collaboratively with other local
organizations to provide education to Kings County students through interactive booths
at Red Ribbon events held annually in October.
The Mental & Emotional Wellbeing works to reduce the stigma of Mental Illness in
Kings County. A major initiative of the workgroup is training teachers and providing the
skills to identify, understand and support their students with social and emotional issues.
The Reproductive & Sexual Health workgroup collaborates with school districts
to ensure their existing sex education programs are providing students with the tools
and information they need and are including a focus on healthy relationships.
The Kings County Tobacco-Free Partnership is committed to promoting a tobacco-
free environment through prevention, education, encouragement of public policy, and
broad-based community support for tobacco control activities.
The Kings County Asthma Coalition through community
engagement and patient empowerment, provides education, raises awareness and
supports policies that decrease the impact of asthma in our communities.
ON THE HORIZON Fall 2018 will be an exciting time for KPFP as the Strategic Planning process begins. With such a rapid
growth over the last four years, it would be easy for KPFP to slow down and ride the waves, but that’s not
how positive change takes place. KPFP understands that there is no such thing as standing still. An
organization is either moving forward or it’s moving backward, and KPFP is driven to keep pushing! If
funding allows, here are some of the many things on the horizon:
§ Got needs? 2019 – The first county-wide Community Needs Assessment was extremely successful
in 2017, and all of the data has been added to the KPFP website as local indicators. Created to be
conducted bi-annually, 2019 will include random survey administration from all community
partners, public forums, and focus groups. With a unique focus on community perception versus
reality, this endeavor provides valuable insight into the residents of Kings County.
§ Youth Award – KPFP would like to expand the annual ‘Youth Award’ to include scholarships for
youth doing exceptional work in the areas of Prevention in Kings County.
§ Community Engagement Project – KPFP is planning to continue its work with the Home Garden
Neighborhood Association, empowering them to create positive change. This partnership has been
extremely successful, and the hope is to create more self-sustaining community driven entities to
ensure vulnerable population voices are heard.
§ Local Data Indicators – KPFP is excited to launch the next phase of the website: adding local
data! Although it is understandable that not all data is shareable, KPFP believes that organizations
can help one another by sharing what is possible. By layering local data to the 150+ regularly
updated indicators on the website, the whole picture of Kings County will begin to be painted.
§ ACEs Task Force – Data is only valuable when it is being used. KPFP is prepared to take data to
the next level by implementing an ACEs Task Force to disect the existing data surrounding adverse
childhood experiences in Kings County.
§ Communities of Excellence-‐ KPFP has partnered with Adventist Health to engage in the
Communities of Excellence project, using the Baldrige Excellence Builder to achieve optimal
performance in ‘health, education, economy, and quality of life.’ By envisioning the community as a
set of systems that all must function together in order to achieve greatness, Kings County will work
across sectors and generations to enhance community performance.
§ School Resource Guide-‐ KPFP has partnered with Kings County Office of Education to develop a
resource guide for all schools in Kings County to be housed on the KPFP website. The goal of this
project is to bridge the gap between service providers and school districts, making it easy to
connect to one another! Through the guide, schools will be able to showcase what they do outside
of the classroom. Providers will be able to see gaps to address, who to contact, and how to reach
audiences. Schools will be able to reach providers and learn best practices from one another.
