Background to Study
Background:
The healthcare industries in sub-Saharan Africa are poorly understood even by those operating on the
ground in Africa. This research service was thus conducted to provide an introduction to the status of the
healthcare industries in the key sub-Saharan African countries: South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya and Tanzania;
and to provide a top-down analysis of the pharmaceutical and medical devices sectors in each of these four
countries. In addition, the research was conducted to provide an indication of the significant opportunities for
those organisations operating within the healthcare industry; due to the high value of donor funds entering
the continent and the fact that Africa is the last untapped healthcare market.
