Whether you are a first time visitor, frequent visitor or resident, you’re going to find lots of new ways to have fun in Myrtle Beach this year. Choose one or all of these exciting attractions for fun for the entire family.

Just opened in March, Celebration Music Theatre is located in Surfside Beach in a newly remodeled theatre space. The theatre is home to the tribute show SUPERSTARZ! Live, in addition to a robust Broadway series including the popular musical comedy Greater Tuna and blockbuster Hairspray. Celebration Music Theatre is also offering a summer children’s program, the “Rocktastics.”

Myrtle Beach will welcome The SkyWheel in May as one of the best ways to see the Grand Strand. Take a ride in one of its 42 climate controlled gondolas that seat up to six people. Each ride lasts about eight to twelve minutes and offers panoramic views of Downtown Myrtle Beach and beyond. WonderWorks will be making Broadway at the Beach in Myrtle Beach its 4th home this spring. At 50,000 square feet in size and 97 feet in height, Wonderworks will be situated at the site of the former Crab House Restaurant. Its dramatic exterior is designed with the appearance of landing upside-down. This unforgettable experience combines education and entertainment with more than 100 hands-on experiences, from being blown around by a 74 mile per hour hurricane to a ride on a virtual 360 degree roller coaster and so much more.

In June, Dixie Stampede transforms into Pirates Voyage at a cost of over $11 million dollars in upgrades. This new attraction features a Buccaneer Battle with a Pirate Feast you don’t want to miss. Guests will experience the spirit and swashbuckling excitement of pirates that called the Carolina coast home. The Crimson and Sapphire pirates will battle it out on the ship, in the 15-foot deep lagoon and in the sky above the ship, much to the delight of the audience. Guests will also enjoy a five-course pirate’s feast.

For more information about these attractions, visit www.strandmagazine.com.

You’ll never run out of things to do while visiting the Grand Strand! You can experience heart-pounding water park slides, parasail over the blue Atlantic Ocean, play a round of miniature golf, or cruise the Intracoastal Waterway on Jet Skis. If you’re feeling adventurous, you may charter a sailboat or take a deep sea fishing trip to the Gulf Stream.

The Myrtle Beach area offers a little something for everyone, and more importantly, provides experiences the whole family can enjoy. Dinner theaters abound along the Grand Strand from the knights of the roundtable at Medieval Times to pirates singing, dancing and entertaining you at Pirates Voyage, both offering exceptional meals for the entire family.

If award winning theater with incredible star studded musicians, vocalists and dancers are more your style, don’t miss a visit to the Carolina Opry, a Myrtle Beach phenomenon for over 25 years. Or step out to Celebration Music Theatre, the newest addition to the Grand Strand entertainment venue to hear celebrity impersonations like Tina Turner, Garth Brooks and Elvis.

Whether you feel like dancing, catching a stand-up comedy act or listening to hand-clapping, foot-stomping music at one of our world-class entertainment centers, you’ll find endless choices for a perfect evening. And of course, you’ll want to drop by a nightspot where the shag (the official state dance) is the dance of choice.

There’s fun to be found along the Grand Strand. Enjoy!

If you’re out on the beach early in the morning, you may see a SCUTE (South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts) volunteer monitoring loggerhead sea turtle activity. The official reptile of South Carolina averages 200-300 pounds and can grow up to 5 feet in length. Even though these turtles are large in size, they are not large in numbers and are a threatened species. Bothering them or the nests is prohibited by law.

SCUTE volunteers are dedicated to sea turtle conservation in Georgetown and Horry counties. Organized in 1990 and based out of Pawleys Island, SCUTE is permitted by the S.C. Department of Natural Resources to protect and, if necessary, relocate turtle nests as well as record turtle deaths through the Sea Turtle Stranding and Salvage Network.

On average, SCUTE records 100 plus loggerhead nests with more than 12,000 eggs along Horry-Georgetown beaches each year. Volunteers estimate 80 percent of the eggs resulted in hatchlings make it safely to the ocean. Experience has shown, however, that only one in 10,000 hatchlings may grow to adulthood, which takes up to 25 years. These low odds make the SCUTE / Santee Cooper preservation effort essential to loggerhead sea turtle survival in South Carolina.Throughout the nesting and hatching season, SCUTE volunteers distribute information to beach goers who express an interest in turtle conservation. For more information on the loggerhead sea turtle, contact SCUTE at 843-237-9821 or 843-235-8755 or Myrtle Beach State Park at 843-238-0874.

This seasonal exhibit features a lush garden filled with tropical plants where hundreds of butterflies soar through the air. Monarch, Zebra Longwing, Polydamas Swallowtails, Pipevine Swallowtails, Spicebush Swallowtails, Julias, Buckeyes, Queens, Painted Lady, and American Lady are just a few of the species that call Whispering Wings home. We will add dozens of other species throughout the summer and fall. All over the world, butterflies are valued for their beauty and currently inhabit every continent except Antarctica. Colorful, dainty creatures, butterflies belong to the Lepidoptera order of insects. They are cold-blooded and depend on the sun to regulate their temperature. They are essential pollinators in the garden and need nectar plants for adult butterflies, host plants to provide food and camouflage for caterpillars and plants that provide shelter from wind and predators. Whispering Wings contains a pupae emergence room where visitors may observe the transformation from chrysalis to adult butterflies. Interpretive signs throughout the exhibit and benches provide a restful place to watch their delicate beauty in flight. The exhibit is open daily from 10 am-4:30 pm.

Tickets are $3 for adults and $2 for children, for a 30 minute timed visit in addition to garden admission. For more information, call 843-235-6000 or visit www.brookgreen.org.

Chuck’s Steak House9695 North Kings Highway, Restaurant Row, Myrtle Beach843-449-7611 • www.chuckssteakhousemb.com

Since 1979, Chuck’s Steak House, a favorite among locals, golfers and families, uses the original steak house/salad bar concept featuring thick, aged steaks, all hand cut daily. At Chuck’s, the emphasis has always been on our steaks, but we are also known for our chops, slow roasted prime rib, lobster tails, baby back ribs, chicken and our “in house“ fresh ground burgers. Our customers relax and dine in a casual atmosphere that can best be described as one of “rustic elegance.” The owner’s love of the outdoors is evident throughout with some of the finest “blue ribbon” taxidermy and wildlife artwork in the southeast. Three fireplaces, a comfortable library and a view of the Intracoastal Waterway make Chuck’s Steak House a tradition and a destination year after year. Reservations are accepted but not necessary. Children’s and Senior Citizen’s menus. Open 7 days a week. Happy hour 4 to 7 pm. Early Bird 4:30-6:30. Dinner is served from 4:30 pm. Smoke Free. Conveniently located just south of Tanger Outlet Center and Bass Pro Shops in Restaurant Row. Map #13

locally on Wadamalaw Island, the site of America’s ONLY working tea plantation. Visitors may tour The Charleston Tea Plantation and enjoy

factory and trolley tours of the grounds. For more info, visit www.

In order to make a gallon of this southern delight, bring 6 cups of water to a boil, remove it from the heat and add 4 family-size tea bags to the water to steep. Next pour the warm tea in a pitcher and add 1 to 1 ½ cups of sugar. Stir until the sugar has dissolved and fill the rest of the pitcher with cold water or ice cubes and your “southern house wine” is ready! For an even more refreshing drink, gather a few mint leaves out of your garden and add them to your glass of Southern Sweet Tea. Remember, the sweeter the tea, the better!

Grand Strand shopping offers something for every taste. From historic Georgetown to relaxing Ocean Isle, we have trendy boutiques and themed shopping villages. You’ll discover exciting retail stores, factory-direct malls, along with tempting restaurants and entertainment.

Tanger Outlets’ two locations are a bargain hunter’s paradise. Myrtle Beach is also the home of Coastal Grand, South Carolina’s largest mall. The iconic Gay Dolphin, on Ocean Boulevard, has been offering unusual gifts and souvenirs for over 50 years.

Discriminating shoppers will enjoy visiting The Market Common, our urban village on the South end of Myrtle Beach, offering high end boutiques such as Anthropologie (the only one in South Carolina), Copper Penny, Williams Sonoma, Pottery Barn, and Brooks Brothers as well as great restaurants, including P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, Tommy Bahama and Travinia Italian Kitchen. Follow a fun day or evening of shopping and dining with a great summer movie at the Grand 14 theater.
