Discovered and claimed by Portugal in the late 15th century, the

islands' sugar-based economy gave way to coffee and cocoa in the

19th century.

The Democratic Republic of São Tomé and Príncipe, is a

Portuguese-speaking island nation in the Gulf of Guinea, off the

western equatorial coast of Central Africa, straddling the Equator,

west of Gabon. It consists of two islands: São Tomé and Príncipe,

São Tomé and Príncipe is the second-smallest African country in

terms of population (the Seychelles being the smallest). The two

main islands form part of a chain of extinct volcanoes and both are

mountainous.

The economy of the country is still dominated by the export of

cocoa which represents 95% of exports by value. The plantations,

nationalised at independence, have since been re-privatised as

part of economic reforms introduced in the late 1980s. But the

economy is set to change dramatically as it enters the ranks of oil

producers. In order to cope with the huge impact of oil receipts,

the government adopted an Oil Revenue Management Law in late

2004 to ensure that oil revenue is managed transparently and

efficiently. The Law also provides for a government Trust Fund.

On February 22, 2008, the country was accepted as a candidate

country to join the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative

(EITI) and received a grant of support from the EITI multidonor trust

fund.

The country has a huge potential in the tourism sector with some

significant investment by companies. Other sectors of the

economy such as construction, telecommunications, finances,

energy, hydrocarbons, health and education can attract invest-

ment.

São Tomé and Príncipe Invest 2012 will present these opportu-

nities and will be the platform for the Government and business

leaders to start talking projects and development of the country.

Santome, is the main lingua franca; others are Angolar and

Annual growth: 4.0% (est. 2009) / Forecast 2010 4.5%

Inflation: 23% (World Fact Book est. 2009)

Climate: tropical; hot, humid; one rainy season (October to May)

São Tomé e Príncipe foi descoberto por Portugal nos finais do

seculo 15, o artquipelogo tinha a sua economia baseada na

industria de açucar e a volta do seculo 19 deu lugar a industria do

café e cacao.

A Republica Democratica de São Tomé e Príncipe e um

arquipelo de expressão Portuguesa localizado no Golfo da Guinea

no Ocidental da costa do equador e no Centro de Africa. Entre o

Equador e a parte Oeste do Gabão. O arquipelogo e composto por

duas ilhas; São Tomé e Príncipe

São Tomé e Príncipe e o segundo menor pais de Africa em termo de

populacão (Seychelles e o manor pais Africano). As duas ilhas

formão parte das distinta ilhas volcanica e montanhosas.

A economia do pais continua a ser dominada pela exportacão do

cacao que representa 95% dos valores de exportações. As planta-

ções nacionalizadas durante a independencia foi re-privatizado

como parte das reformas economica introduzidas nos finais de

1980. A economia esta preste a mudar dramaticamente como um

pais agora productor de Petróleo. De forma a ter melhor control das

receitas do petróleo, o governo adotou a Lei da Gestao das Receitas

do Petróleonos finais de 2004. Esta lei foi criada para garantir a

gestão das receitas do petróleo em forma transparente e efficais.

Esta lei tambem providencia o governo na criar de um Fundo do

Petróleo.

No dia 22 de Fevereiro 2008, o pais foi aceite como um pais

candidato a fazer parte da Extractive Industries Transparency

Initiative (EITI) e recebeu um imprestimo de suporte fo Fundo da

EITI.

O pais tambem tem um grande potencial no sector do turismo e já

há algumas companhias a investir neste sector. Outros sectores da

economia como construcão, telecomunicacão, finanças, energia,

hydrocarbonetos, saude e educacão esta a atrair investidores.

São Tomé e Príncipe Invest 2012 ira apresentar oportunidades de

negocio ao investidores e tambem ira servir de plataforma para o

governo e leaderes de negocio debater a serca de projectos e

desenvolvimento do pais.
