Personal Project

The story I am writing now is split into 2 parts:

1) Main Story (the story I have written halfway before the writer’s block came)2) Fragmented (Short) Stories.

Fragmented Stories are short stories that tell different parts of the whole story.

I chose to do this because I have a type of writer’s block: I have too many ideas that are hard to collect them and to write them.

SITUATION

Chapter Stories: Stories that consists of approx.

4000 words and must be of a certain topic. Fragmented Stories: Stories that consists of

approx. 2000 words which tells specific parts of the story, usually of an event happening.

Transition Stories: Stories that connects one event to another. Usually the reason why another event happens.

Chapter Stories = Fragmented Stories + Transition Stories.

SHORT STORIES

PROCESS INVOLVED

Step 1: Gather Ideas from various sources.

- Ideas are easily generated by watching cartoons, movies, reading books, etcetera as the mind would come up with ways to improve the show or how the show should have ended.

- These ideas can be used in story-writing.- Cartoons and Movies can be of any sort. Even

from the most Science-Fictional to the ones that really brings in loads of education.

Step 2: Be the idea

- Go through the idea by imagining that you are inside the story, going through the events as mentioned.

- Once thought out thoroughly, the process of writing can be continued.

Step 3: Writing Phase

- Ignore all grammatical errors or vocab use errors. The main key display is the storyline and to get it right is building the foundation of the story.

- Takes about 1hr 15 min to create 1,000 words. - After 1,500 words, the mind tends to be exhausted. Stop

at 1,500 to prevent any spoils onto your story-line. Continue when refreshed.

- Instead of the casual 553 words per day, 1,000 words per day would be better.

Step 4: Quick Editing + Thorough Editing- After writing the story, editing is highly necessary to

remove as many grammatical and vocabulary errors as possible so as to make the story more appealing to readers.

- A Quick Editing: A quick glance through areas such as tenses and punctuations and spelling, to make sure everything is picture perfect.

- A Thorough Editing has 2 phases:1) Self-Identifying Grammatical mistakes and wrong Vocab misuses.2) Putting it through proof-reading by teachers, friends, students or various software.

- This will take at least 1month.

Step 5: Final Adjustments + Publish

- After all the hard work put into editing and writing the story, it needs to be read through a few more times to see which part can be improved to make the story far more interesting.

- Until the story is satisfactory to me, publishing it will then be necessary.

- Half of income will be donated to charity. Other half will be used for any materials needed for the next story.

1) The choice of story is usually hard to choose. However, I found out that I have been writing a lot of stories in 3rd Person or 1st Person. Hence this time, I would like to try 2nd Person, even if it fails miserably.

2) The Base Idea is generated from the means of everyday life, trying to find something unique and turn that into a great story to either arouse interest or create awareness.

3) Hence, the idea of a Janitor came up as it is uncommon, and many have come to believe that a Janitor’s life is nothing but sadness.

April 3rd – April 10th

1) The second most toughest part of any story-writing. Resilience, patience and perseverance are some of the factors of this story.

2) During this phase, I will write the ideas that come into my head continuously. Almost about 559 words per day.

3) Unfortunately, a constant idea generation is not easy. And with the accompaniment of Writer’s block, it is a disaster.

4) Hence, what I did is to try a different strategy, by writing different parts of the story first.

April 11th – September 1st

1) The hardest part of any story has come. Editing is a way to make readers know your accuracy in English. One bad grammatical mistake is enough to let anyone know your inferiority in English.2) To have a good edit, proofreading must be undergone. I will use Grammarly as a way to identify any mistakes in the story. Similarly, I will also call upon my teachers to help me as well.3) Afterwards, there will be a last a final read-through by myself before publishing the book.

September 1st – October 1st

The pictures can vary as I can’t decide which picture suits the story the best.

TRAILER

Completion Date: September A short, brief animation to showcase

what the story is mostly about. Brings in greater attention for people to

buy my book. Helps to improve 2 skills at once: Kill 2

birds with one stone by learning how to Write Storybooks and how to Animate.

HOW THE TRAILER IS MADE

Either of the following ways:1. If time allows it, use Source Filmmaker (SFM) where

video game characters made by a company called Valve can be used as puppets to demonstrate certain activities to be made into a show. This software is free on Steam stores.

2. If there is a lack of time, a simple Window’s Media Player trailer would be good enough to showcase the main points of the story.

3. Music-wise, I will be able to use a software called Sony ACID Pro which is basically a software for organizing music pieces (or loops) into a nice song. Otherwise, a simple song taken out from Youtube will fit nicely.

PICTURE-AIDED

Maybe add some pictures to make the book more interesting.

Pictures will tell about the journey of the reader, making the reader feel like he/she truly is in the event by drawing 2nd Person Drawings (that is, seeing through your eyes).

SNEAK PEEKS

Basically, this story is about a Janitor’s life.

Many people have been going around saying being a road-sweeper, or people who carries brooms and mops are considered lifeless people who are patient for death.

But I say different. I believe a Janitor’s life is so much more than what meets the eye. So to do so, I decide to come up with a story about one who actually meets extraordinary events.

More will be said on the story-line slides later.

IDEA GENERATION

HOW DO YOU FIND THE INSPIRATION AND THE IDEAS? An Idea Generation is the process in which you

try to collect ideas, either from memory or from self-construction, and use them for the story.

The inspiration is to learn. As I have never written a complete, full story in my life, my inspiration is therefore to be able to accomplish this goal of mine.

My ideas come from 3 basic sources. In the next slide, I will show you from which sources I usually take them from.

CARTOONS, MOVIES AND VIDEO GAMES!?

These are, to me, some of the basic areas where idea generation comes in very frequently.

For Cartoons, usually that of “child-like” cartoons give me more ideas at fast paces, while adult like cartoons are slightly slower.

I can’t name some examples because I am too shy to say them :3 But I guess you get the clues to what kind of “cartoons” I am referring to.

For Movies, usually inspirational movies or movies involving a dramatic death or battle will give me better ideas. (E.g. I.Robot, or 2012, etcetera.)

For Video Games, usually with story lines, will also create a sense of anticipation in me, to want to write stories. (E.g. Halo Series, Call of Duty series, etcetera.)

• Now, I am currently nearing the end of Chapter 3’s worth of words, but the stories I write (fragmented) are all over the place.

• I have written stories about a small ship ride that turned into a devastating re-enactment of Titanic.

• I have written stories about a massive fire spreading in an office complex.

• I have written about the feeling of neglect by one’s daughters.

• I have written about redeeming oneself by taking the bullet instead of someone else.

• I have written about sitting in a cold cave with nothing much to do but feel sorry about oneself.

*STORY LINE

Beginning and Character Introductions.

The Partial climax, whereby the main character starts to discover more about his ability and his cleaning skills.

The Heavy climax will be placed here. Awkward when it should be in the middle, but the greatest conclusion towards the whole story, and to the character’s life will be displayed here.

Will contain the following:For the beginning phase, about 10-15 Short Stories and about 2-3 Transition stories.For the middle phase, about 20 Short Stories and 5 Transition stories.For the final phase, about 20 short stories and 5 Transition stories.

Total words to aim for: 100,000. Each chapter story secures approx. 2000 words while each transition story secures 1500+/-

THE LONG ROAD

WRITER’S EXPERIENCE

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE STORY-WRITING?• It is to explore new things, to learn new stuff while I’m still young.

• To fulfil my dream of ever completing a story.

• To gather the experience of Story-Writing as I have never actually been in the shoes of authors before. Hence with this opportunity, I get to learn loads of new things.

• To express my feelings from time to time.

HOW DOES IT FEEL WRITING A STORY THAT LONG?• It feels exciting in the beginning, knowing that I could do all sorts of things and just pour

out all of my ideas in an instant.

• When creating the story and writing my first chapter, I feel that burning, fiery passion to continue writing non-stop.

• Until I reached around 8,000 words, it hit me that the task at hand is not going to be easy, especially since I am asking to write a 100,000 word story. So I start to get a little panicky.

• When I cleared my writer’s block, that feeling of determination immediately came back. Now I am just gathering ideas to put into the computer so I can, in the future, connect the dots to make them form into one gigantic, dramatic, adventurous story.

• Now with 17,000+ words, I feel I can complete it soon enough. And with the fact that June holidays are coming, that is the period of time when I feel I can go into “Overdrive” and write many words.

COMPLICATIONS?• Many. Since now is the period of time to study for my GCE O’ Levels which are

approaching alarmingly fast, time for such is minimal. Along with other side factors like this presentation and perhaps some sort of minor/major test, it is proven to be difficult.

• Not many authors have written stories in 2nd Person. Most of the books you see are either in 1st or 3rd Person. And it is also proven that 2nd Person is extremely hard to write (though I don’t know why).

• More writer’s blocks are coming. It’s like a wave of enemies.

• But in the midst of this “storm”, I will just continue writing. Even if I can’t publish it in the end, I know that at least I manage to come up with something.

• And I believe such stories cannot be written in mere seconds. Ideas don’t come in like an ever-flowing fountain. They spark in at random times and when it does, one can explode into writing tons of beautiful stories.
