Introduction

Experience, this is where we get most of our knowledge from. We can say that it is inevitable not to learn from experience. As future educators, we were asked to have an activity which is “Story Sharing” where we can obtain some teaching experiences.

The purpose of this report is to let the reader see our first-hand experience in this paper. We have conducted a story sharing class at Sta. Filomena Integrated School for grade 5 student. We’ve also included some pictures of the activities we gave before, during and after each stories.

Storytelling is the conveying of events in words, and images, often by improvisation or embellishment. Stories or narratives have been shared in every culture as a means of entertainment, education, cultural preservation, and instilling moral values. Crucial elements of stories and storytelling include plot, characters, and narrative point of view.

Storytelling predates writing, with the earliest forms of storytelling usually oral combined with gestures and expressions. In addition to being part of religious ritual,  rock art may have served as a form of storytelling for many ancient cultures. TheAustralian aboriginal people painted symbols from stories on cave walls as a means of helping the storyteller remember the story. The story was then told using a combination of oral narrative, music, rock art, and dance, which bring understanding and meaning of human existence through remembrance and enactment of stories.[1] People have used the carved trunks of living trees and ephemeral media (such as sand and leaves) to record stories in pictures or with writing. Complex forms of tattooing may also represent stories, with information about genealogy, affiliation, and social status.

With the advent of writing and the use of stable, portable media, stories were recorded, transcribed, and shared over wide regions of the world. Stories have been carved, scratched, painted, printed or inked onto wood or bamboo, ivory and other bones, pottery, clay tablets, stone, palm-leaf books, skins (parchment), bark cloth, paper, silk, canvas, and other textiles, recorded on film, and stored electronically in digital form. Oral stories continue to be committed to memory and passed from generation to generation, despite the increasing popularity of written and televised media in much of the world.

Modern storytelling has a broad purview. In addition to its traditional forms (fairytales, folktales, mythology, legends, fables etc.), it has extended itself to representing history, personal narrative, political commentary, and evolving cultural norms. Contemporary storytelling is also widely used to address educational objectives. New forms of media are creating new ways for people to record, express, and consume stories. Tools for asynchronous group communication can provide an environment for individuals to reframe or recast individual stories into group stories.] Games and other digital platforms, such as those used in interactive fiction or interactive storytelling, may be used to position the user as a character within a bigger world. Documentaries, including interactive web documentaries, employ storytelling narrative techniques to communicate information about their topic.

Nila’s Story

I have a friend, who like me is unmarried. Let’s call her Olive. She has plenty of nephews and nieces. She cares for them like her own. Once she had a problem with her 3-year-old niece, Nila.

The little girl was the middle child in the family where the eldest was four years old and the youngest was newly born. Nila had unexplained rashes and a fever that went on and of which the Neighbourhood doctor could not explain. Taking a suggestion of another friend, Olive took Nila

to a paediatrician who had a clinic at a government hospital. The doctor took one look at the child and with a rather surly expression told my friend, “You are a working mother aren’t you?

My friend sheepishly replied that she was not the mother of the little girl but only the aunt. “Where is the mother? I need to talk to her. The doctor was informed that the mother was busy working and that she had not time to take this child to a doctor, having her hands full with two other children. The doctor told Olive, “Since you seem to care about your niece, take time to

cuddle her when you come home from work”. This child is not physically ill. She is emotionally deprived. “Every child need to be caressed or kissed or talked to by people they love and who love them. These rashes and unexplained fever will instantly disappear the moment you give some time to touching her and interacting with her”. My friend followed the advice and sure

enough, the child’s condition improved in no time.

Nurses Two

At a hospital, there was a big nursery with two sections, each manned by a different nurse. The nursery’s supervisor noted that the babies in Nurse Ruby’s section seemed heavier and stronger

than those in Nurse Opal’s. Curious to know the reason, the supervisor observed the nurses for an entire week. All at once she knew the big difference between the two women. Whenever Nurse Opal brought the children their formulas, she simply stuck the bottle into their mouths, tucked them in and left. Nurse Ruby however, would pick up every child, take each in her arms for a

few seconds, and speak in a soothing voice. The child took its few gulps, before laying the baby down again in the crib.
