I read the story The Three Little Wolves and the Big Bad Pig aloud to my class. They loved it!

Next!Next!I opened my pre-prepared powerpoint and projected it on to the screen so that the whole class could see.

My powerpoint had only the prompts for the story in it, and as a class we filled the rest in. The kids dictated to me as I typed.

Last!Last!

We started the slideshow and read what we had written all together. If something sounded wrong or the flow of events in the story was off, we went back and changed it.

What Went WellWhat Went Well

The kids were so excited to be using the projector and computer!

They really enjoyed seeing their own words and ideas up on the screen!

At the end of the lesson we had a correct and thorough retelling of the story, with very little help (beyond the typing) from me.

What I Would ChangeWhat I Would Change

Since the powerpoint revolved around a whole class discussion, it was difficult to asses if EVERY student was getting the concept of retell 100% of the time.

Effective Technology Effective Technology IntegrationIntegration

Student Use: I was the one actually using the technology, but the kids participated actively by dictating words. This was a first grade and the kids do not have a grasp of typing skills yet, so it was better to do it this way.

Essential Technology: The powerpoint was an essential part of the lesson. If we had simply had a verbal discussion about the sequence of the story, it wouldn’t have been nearly as effective!

Focus on Learning: We used powerpoint as a tool to gather our thoughts about the story in a visible and accessible way, but the lesson was always focussed on the story retell.

Added Value: The powerpoint was a great way to get the kids excited about a concept that we had been working on for over a week!
