October Message from Mrs. Sooklal Assistant Principal
Dearest Parents,
October is National Bullying
Prevention Month. We at Sky
Academy are stepping up
awareness and for students to
step up against bullying. As a
school we are promoting "Just
say Hello” campaign. This is for
students to reach out to others
and let them know they matter
by just greeting them and saying
hello. We are collecting bottle
caps to have several benches
made to promote compassion
and caring for others.
We as your child’s educators
continue to maintain a culture of
acceptance, tolerance and re-
spect for all people. With your
help and support we can make a
difference. The simple act of
saying hello, not being afraid to
say "that's not cool” empowers
students to do the right thing
and with our leadership and
example we can establish a
positive and nurturing learning
environment for all.
I have added a clip from the FLDOE
website. Please feel free to check
out this site for helpful ideas and a
better understanding about what we
can do as parents, students and
educators.
What is bullying?
Bullying happens when someone
hurts or scares another person on
purpose. The person being bullied
has a hard time defending himself or
herself. Usually, bullying happens
over and over.
Sometimes bullying is easy to notice,
such as with hitting or name calling,
and other times it’s hard to see, like
with leaving a person out or saying
mean things behind someone’s back.
Both boys and girls bully, and both
boys and girls get bullied. Bullying is
not fair, and it hurts.
Discuss with children how to deal
with bullying:
• Tell your parents or other trusted
adults. They can help stop the bully-
ing.
If you are bullied at school, tell
your teacher, or school Administra-
tion.
Telling is not tattling.
• Don’t fight back. Don’t try to bully
those who bully you.
• Try not to show anger or fear.
Students who bully like to see that
they can upset you.
• Calmly tell the student to stop…or
say nothing and then walk away.
Report to parents or school.
• Use humor, if this is easy for you to
do. (For example, if a student makes
fun of your clothing, laugh and say,
“Yeah, I think this shirt is kind of
funny-looking, too.”)
• Try to avoid situations in which
bullying is likely to happen.
You might want to:
• Avoid areas of the school where
there are not many students or
teachers around.
A special recognition goes to our Flag football team and our Volleyball teams who are doing an excellent job this year.
Please continue to stress the importance of Execu-tive Function and staying ORGANIZED to your SKY student. We want to always keep our lines of communication open, so please do not hesitate to call us or e mail us at anytime. I sin-cerely THANK YOU for allowing us the pleasure of working with your students and being a part of our SKY FAMILY!!!

• Make sure you aren’t alone in
the bathroom
or locker room.
• Sit near the front of the bus.
• Don’t bring expensive things or
lots of money to school.
• Sit with a group of friends at
lunch.
• Take a different route through
hallways or walk with friends or a
teacher to your classes.
On October 21, we will ask
students to add something or-
ange to their uniform to support
“Unity Day” awareness on bully-
ing.
Please do not hesitate to call
Administration with any con-
cerns.
Always lead by example at
home. Teach your children
acceptance and tolerance of all
people .
Greetings, Parents! Principal, Steve Smith
Greetings parents, I wanted to share with you how pleased we are with our students. Many of our students are going above and beyond to keep SKY Academy a special place. All of our students have finished their (Beginning of the Year) DATA col-lection for Physical Education. All students will be setting goals for their (Middle of the Year) DATA!
All students have also taken the FAIR reading test and teachers are going over results with stu-dents. We have a few different events planned for the month of October so please take a look at our calendar.
8th grade Language Arts in October covers Unit 2: the thrill of horror. 8th graders will be writing scary stories, creating PowerPoint presentations about their favorite monsters, and will be decorating the 2nd story hallway with scary and gruesome posters they create in class. 8th grade will make sure all of SKY will be in the Halloween spirit.
In math class, the 6th grade is wrap-ping up Factors and Multiples, and diving into Decimals and Fractions. Advanced Math is beginning Algebra by learning about parts of expressions and the different algebraic properties. Keep up with us on http://www.teacherweb.com/FL/SKYAcademy/Gaudreau!
Parent Reminders
It is in the best interest of all students to be here by 7:40 AM. If a student is late every day they miss out on im-portant information at the
beginning of their first class.
Students must be in class by 7:40. After 7:45 bell they are marked tardy. After 5 tardy there will be a notice sent home and a possible Adminis-trative meeting. We under-stand everyone is on a time schedule and it is your respon-sibility to adjust accordingly.
All car riders must be dropped off and picked up at the cafete-ria at arrival and dismissal.
More whole grains
Less sodium
At SKY Academy, I am very proud to say we EXCEED these standards and the majority of our meals are freshly prepared by our very talented Chef Dino. When my children went to school, they did not have a “Chef Dino,” and daily I packed their lunch. But although nutritious, if my children had been able to eat the “SKY menu,” I would have let them eat at school.
Research shows that school lunches offer more variety and thus are more nutritious than most packed lunches. When I make “lunch rounds” at both SKYs, the students that pack their lunch will even admit the school lunch is probably more nutritious.
This month a few featured items include:
It’s A Great New Day for School Lunches
Each month, me and Chef Dino will share with you some “Nutritious Bites” for you and your family to “chew” on! We hope that you are enjoying the new school year and SKY Academy.
This month we celebrate National School Lunch week: October 12–16, 2015. There is something to celebrate because new federal nutrition standards were issued in 2012-2013. During the school year 2012-2013, school lunches changed to meet new standards requiring:
Age-appropriate calorie limits
Larger servings of vegetables and fruits
A wider variety of vegetables, including dark green and red/orange vegetables and legumes
Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-free)
Caesar Bowl: Baked Chicken, Romaine Lettuce, Baked Croutons, Garbanzo Beans, with Caesar dress-ing, apple and milk
Squash Lasagna, fresh Broccoli, whole grain roll, fresh banana, milk
Whole Wheat Cheese Pizza, SKY Café’ salad, fresh cut fruit, and milk
I would like you to come and try a lunch at SKY Café’ during National School Lunch week…or at least encourage your student(s) at SKY to try the lunch one day during that week. At SKY Café’ we believe in the “power of the fork.” We choose foods that have been shown to boost performance, boost health, and even reduce disease.
Good health is wealth,
Dianne and Chef Dino
