Once upon a time, there were two siblings who lived in the same house in Mafalala, a ward in Maputo, the capital of Mozambique. They lived in a small old wooden and zinc house, which had a mango tree, a banana plant, a lime tree, a cat and some chickens in the yard.

Page 9: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

One day, they woke up early because they had to go to the library to enrol in the Ngalangan dance and music activities which are a traditional dance form of Inhambane.

Our stars were Stelio and Atija, they were happy with what they were going to do: they loved music and dancing. They felt happy when they did it.

Page 10: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

As they were leaving the house, they heard their mother, “Atija, have you still not done the housework? Have you swept the floor? Washed the utensils? Have you dusted the living room? And your brothers’ room?”

Atija: “Mother, I am late! I have to enrol!”Mother: “Go finish everything! Then you can go and enrol

in whatever you want”.Stelio didn’t even look back and just walked off.

Page 11: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Atija was so sad that she began to cry. She swept very quickly, washed the utensils and finished the other chores as quickly as possible. She ran very fast to school, as if she were flying like a plane.

Page 12: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

As soon as she reached the library she spoke to the teacher Mr. Baptista and explained the situation but the reply she got was “You’re late! It’s not possible to enrol!”

If Atija was sad, now she was angry, enraged like a leopard. She decided to go with a friend, Judite, to speak with the director, Mr. Justine. She greeted him and explained why she had reached late.

Page 14: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

The director instead of excusing her said, “as a punishment you have to sweep the school yard!”

Atija went off to sweep with her head bent low.

Page 15: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

When she finished, ashamed, she asked the director, May I go back to the library?”

Director: “Yes you may, and don’t be late again!”

Page 16: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Stelio was sad as his sister could not participate, but he said “don’t worry you will get another opportunity very soon. I heard that our school will be invited to dance on the Pirli - Pipi on Mozambican television. It’s on 3rd March at 10am. It’s going to be great because they will offer us mata-fome (cakes), calendars, pens, notebooks and much more.”

Page 17: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

The day arrived and they went for the performance. The event, of course, was a huge success.

Page 18: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

From then onwards Stélio started helping his sister in all the house chores before leaving to school.

He understood that women and men have the same rights and obligations.

It’s celebration day today as Catarina and Tiago complete another year of life. The family and friends gather around as the twins open their presents.

Suddenly, they hear a strange, muffled sound coming from one of the coloured boxes. Full of curiosity they try to guess what it could possibly be.

Page 22: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

They open it and to their astonishment, a furry dog jumps out, as fluffy as a ball of wool, with one blue eye and the other brown.

Page 23: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

It looks like a lion cub and hence they call it Simba. From that day, Simba was a part of the family despite

all his tricks.

Page 24: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

The father explained to each child the tasks they had to do in order for Simba to be well taken care of.

Catarina was sad to know that she had to ensure that he had food and fresh water everyday, bathe him, and take him to the vet while her brother only had to pet him and was allowed to have Simba sleeping in his bed.

Catarina complained –“It’s not fair, I get the most boring and

complicated tasks!”

Page 25: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

The father replied with a certain sternness in his tone –

“You did not expect your brother, being a boy to do the tasks that

are meant for girls, did you?”

Page 26: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

On a sunny day, as Catarina was walking Simba, she noticed a pamphlet on the tree at the park which said:

Show us the good side of your “Furry Companion” and win a prize for the most obedient dog in the country.

Win 5000 euros.

Write to us at: [email protected]

Page 27: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Eagerly she took the pamphlet home and showed it to her father, who soon decided that Tiago, being a boy, would participate in the contest with Simba.

Catarina was sad and disappointed, but she knew there was no point complaining.

Page 28: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

For a couple of days, the siblings trained Simba to jump, pretend to be dead, lie down, roll, sit, hi-five, and many other skills.

The three of them had a great deal of fun spending time together.

Finally the day of the contest arrived. At the dogstadium, Catarina, upset and discouraged, stayed on the bench with her parents.

Page 29: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Simba looked at his mistress in surprise as he realized that this time it was Tiago holding the leash. Tiago told him to sit down, but he did not obey. Then a voice came from the

bench and Simba sat down. That voice was Catarina´s. Tiago called his sister to him and together they showed off

Simba’s abilities that he obeyed his owners just as they practiced in the garden.

Page 30: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

The audience continued to applaud and it was then that Tiago and his father realized that they had been unfair to Catarina.

From that day onwards, both of them took care of Simba on alternate days and shared the tasks.

With the prize money they bought a fine bone for their four-legged friend and set out for Mozambique.

In a village named Calapur there lived a poor family. A 12-year-old girl named Priyanka lived with her father, mother, grandmother and younger brother named Aditya. They all lived in a small house which was made of mud and a roof with palm leaves. Their house was situated near the river.

Page 33: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Pryanka’s father was a farmer. He was the only bread winner in the family. He worked very hard to feed his family and to pay for the education of their son. Priyanka’s mother was a housewife. She also helped the father in the fields. She was the most understanding person in the family though she was not very well educated. Her grandmother was very old and mostly stayed at home but she used to prepare home remedies. She was old fashioned and thought that girls should not go to school. Aditya was 10 years old and went to school, even though he wasn’t doing very well.

Page 36: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Priyanka studied till the primary and wanted to study further. Although she was an intelligent girl, her father did not allow her to go to school. He once said “What is the use of your education? One day you have to go to your husband’s house!”. But Priyanka used to reply, that if she got a job and a good salary, then she would be able to contribute to her dowry.

Page 37: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Pryanka’s father was not satisfied with the preview year’s harvest. The traditional seeds did not give a good yield. Therefore he decided to buy high quality seeds. They were expensive so he had to take a loan from the bank.

Page 38: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

All of a sudden a disease spread around the village. Many villagers along with Priyanka’s father were affected. He was unable to work in the fields and was confined to bed. The grandmother was able to cure him with her home remedies.

Page 39: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Priyanka thought it would be a good idea to start a business. She told her grandmother “Why don’t we make medicines for the villagers?”. Grandmother replied “That’s a good idea! Let’s do it!”. Aditya agreed to help sell them in the market and it turned out he was very good at it.

Page 40: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

By selling the medicines they saved the lives of the villagers and made some extra money to pay off the loan. This was the start of the family business. Priyanka thought of asking her father again about her education and this time her grandmother supported her because she realized what an intelligent girl Priyanka was. Also, they had made enough money for her education.

Page 41: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Priyanka’s father realized that a girl is equal to a boy and agreed to send her back to school in order to complete her studies.

Page 42: STORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND IISTORIES FROM HERE AND BEYOND II A PROJECT BETWEEN INDIA, MOZAMBIQUE AND PORTUGAL SCHOOLS Histórias Daqui e Dali II/ Stories From Here and Beyond II

Priyanka was excellent in academics. A few years later, she left the village for higher studies. She decided to become a teacher and returned to her village and provided free education to the villagers.

This book was written and illustrated by the children of India, Mozambique and Portugal on the theme of gender equality. In order to highlight gender discrimination, these three stories narrate episodes in the lives of women and girls who are victims of unequal treatment within their homes and societies. During the creation and after the first reading of the stories written, not coincidentally, the authors approach the ‘subject’ at the childhood level, with narratives whose main characters are children and tell us tales framed in family, mostly amongst siblings. We realize, therefore, that it is imperative that the work of spreading, strengthening attitudes and behaviour change, begins early and these children are the medium of promoting, protecting and realizing these rights, such as access to education, health, social and cultural activities and freedom of speech, thought and expression.

As a privileged means of socialization, schools should promote equal opportunities and education between men and women. The Stories from here and beyond project, has, as its main objective, the promotion of books, reading and the arts among children, and the exchange between school communities from different countries. At the same time, it integrates the 2020 Agenda of Sustainable Development Goals into its themes, awakening to different approaches in remote parts of the globe and sharing good practices. Students at partner schools develop multilateral cooperation, creativity, spread local habits and cultures, language, material and intangible heritage and share teaching methods; they gain a greater awareness about themselves and where they come from, while at the same time valuing globalization and a world without borders, access to cultural creation and a joint effort for sustainable development. It is an international project designed by CABEÇUDOS – Heads with Ideas and developed by AVOAR – Association for Artistic Education and Literacies in partnership with COMMUNICARE TRUST, with the Ler++ seal, awarded by PNL 2027 and with the UNESCO.
