A Letter from the Literary Teaching Artist: Anita Woodley Hey There! As promised, here’s our book featuring the personal story, and in some instances, stories you shared with your classmates and me during the 2day Stories Come To Life Literary Arts Residency. I had a fabulous time teaching this writing residency while switching into different character voices, like my 100yearold GreatGrandma, Transformers, Curious George and my brother.

Congratulations, YOU are now all independently published authors!

I am very proud of you for sharing your heartfelt stories with the world. Your perspectives are very important and help us to better understand the world that we live in. The world will be a better place for us all to live, work, and grown in because of brave storytellers like you. I know sometimes, times can get rough and many may seem out of your control, even perhaps scary at moments in your life. However, through it all, reach within yourself and the community to find a way to think of something positive to help you stay on a positive course in your life.

Let nothing stop you from reaching your goals, not even yourself!

You inspired me! One of the biggest challenges for me while editing your book was reading about the daily struggles many of you face. As I shared with you in class, many of these struggles I also experienced as a teenager living in poverty in the Housing Projects of Oakland, California. With time and support from people I learned to trust, my tears and anger eventually transformed into smiles and happiness. I had to find positive outlets to bring meaning to my life, like writing what troubles I had in a diary, volunteering with community organizations, sleeping eight hours a night, and finding a mentor who specialized in a field I wanted to work in. This cleared my mind, body, and soul stress. I want to give a special thanks to you for being a part of this program and trusting me with your work. I also thank you for your contributions to the “Urbanese Dictionary”, which features uniquely spelled words used in your work with the same meaning as words in standard English. A special thanks to The Durham Arts Council, Sherry DeVries (DAC Executive Director), CAPS Program, GlaxoSmithKline, and Shana Adams (Director of CAPS) for the generous grant to support this work on a larger scale this year, allowing us to reach the entire sixth grade (3 times more students.) Thank you to my ninth grade Drama teacher Andy Hamner for editing the final versions of your stories. Also a special thanks to Demetrius Hunter of Grocers On Wheels for supplying and delivering fresh fruit daily for the writing sessions. Thank you Greg Register of Sign of Class Durham Flea Market, for printing and assembling all the books. And again, thank you for your stories. Without your energy and contribution this project would not have been possible!

“This was my second year observing the Stories Come Alive residency led by CAPS teaching artist, Anita Woodley at Neal Middle School. It was inspiring to see the students transformed into writers within minutes of meeting Mrs. Woodley. The residency gave students the opportunity to express themselves through writing even if they claimed to not enjoy writing. They all wrote. They all told their own stories, validating themselves and their peers as individuals who each have stories to share. This is an experience I hope will continue each year at Neal and become replicated at other schools. The support of CAPS from Durham Public Schools, and the teachers and administration at Neal has been incredible. Additionally, Durham Arts Council appreciates GlaxoSmithKline for seeing the value in this residency and sponsoring this transformative experience” - Shana Adams, Director of Creative Arts in Public & Private Schools (Durham Arts Council)

CREATIVE ARTS IN THE PUBLIC/PRIVATE SCHOOLS About: The Creative Arts in the Public/Private Schools (CAPS) program provides interactive and creative ways for students and educators to access arts education in public and private schools throughout Durham, Granville, and Orange Counties. Durham Arts Council CAPS has provided Artists-in-Residence programs to students at Lakeview Secondary School for over 9 years during the full school year. Over 20,000 students and 500 educators experience arts education through the Durham Arts Council CAPS program each year.

CAPS History: Born from the concept for integrating the arts with the standard curriculum of Durham schools, CAPS began in 1972 when a small group of Durham parents, artists, and members of Durham’s First Presbyterian Church came together to develop a project that would bring artists into the classroom for several visits. Funding from community organizations and The Urban Ministries Fund of Presbytery of Orange in North Carolina helped to give the then, Council for Creative Arts in the Public Schools, a firm foundation to combine curriculum with creative sessions by local professional artists.

In 1979, CAPS became a full-fledged program maintained by a partnership of Durham Arts Council, Durham County Schools and Durham City Schools. Since that auspicious beginning, the CAPS program has grown over twenty-fold. In 1988, CAPS earned national recognition as a “Model Arts in Education Program” from the National Endowment for the Arts. In 1989, CAPS introduced its hospital

schools residencies; in 1991, CAPS began working in the Triangle’s private schools; and in 1997, CAPS branched out to Orange County and Granville County Schools. Today, CAPS offers over 150 residencies, workshops, performances, and arts integration workshops for educators, lead by 53 Professional Artists and Arts Presenters.

“When I Fell Off A Window” Story & Artwork By: Gibelli Merlo Zelaya

When I was a little girl I was always curious. One day I fell off the window. So this is how it all started. One day my mom told me that we were going on a trip to the beach, but I didn't know what she meant because I was only three years old. Well on the trip my mom, my mom’s friend, and me got tired we stopped at a hotel. Then I went inside. We got in my mom went to take a shower. My mom's friend and I stayed waiting for her. I got bored so I started to jump from the bed to the window. The window was like a table and the window stuck together. My mom's friend was watching TV. I was jumping from the bed to the window. I wonder why I was doing that. We were on the third and second floors. And I started going faster. Then when I jumped

from the bed to the window I fell off the window onto a bush and hit my head. Suddenly my mom's friend heard me and told my mom. They went to going get me and I was bleeding. I do not remember if I was crying and how much I was bleeding. My mom screamed when she saw me. I don't know what I was thinking when I was playing. After a while I had a mark. Luckily I did not get stitches. But I do have a scare till this day on my head.

___________________________________________ “Bulldozer #2”

Story & Artwork By: Husayn Bingham

It was a windy day. We were running laps around the field when my coach called us in to work on hitting. As usual we were bragging and roasting people talking about how slow or how fat they were but it all ended when Bulldozer Number One came up, one on one man to man. The whistle blew and he shot off like a bullet from an Airsoft BB gun. He was fast so I had to be. It was my turn. I’ve played nose

guard, lackie and fullback positions. I came up hyped as ! # ? #. I am normally a calm person. It happened quick. I got hold of his shoulder pads, pushed up with all my muscle then he was down and I was officially announced Bulldozer Number Two. I was thinking about how to become Bulldozer Number One. I would say to people don't get crushed and when you play, play with your heart, play for the love of the game

“My Favorite Movie” Artwork & Story By: Amauri Chambers

One day with my sister and cousin, we all went to watch TV and then this movie came on called, "Scary Movie." The movie began with a young woman named Cindy and she left home. Then the phone rang. She picked it up and they are was a killer in her house. She realized it was a killer name to Ghostface killer. Next he was hiding behind her sofa. After he began to chase her up the stairs. When she was up near, she quickly turned around and he stabbed her she fell down the steps. Cindy and her friends went to their best friend’s show and as she was performing she saw, up in the rafters, killer stabbing her boyfriend, and she was crying for help. People thought that it was a part of the act and then she flew off the stage. Later that evening Cindy's best friend goes face killer, went in the locker room where she said that she was not really scared to die. So he took a butcher's knife and chopped her head off and the funny thing was that she stood was still talking with nobody and so he threw it in the trash. Scary movies give me a good scare once or twice when I'm at home and always the funny parts of the scary movies. My favorite parts are when they poke fun at celebrities. I also like to watch these other scary movies. All of these, all the Chuckie franchises that all the Chuckie franchises saw when the people have little time to escape the torture machines. Michael Myers, Leprechaun, and Freddie. I wrote the story for you all to give you a glimpse of my horror films.

“The Time I Jumped Off A Roof” Artwork & Story By: Damarion Whitted

One day I was on my house. I had beat all the games the other day. I was so bored and it was hot outside, so I went outside because I beat all the games and everyone else was asleep. The name of the game I beat was GTA Five.

I went in my backyard and I was just kicking the ball to the fence and I saw a ladder and I climbed the ladder. I was on top of my house. I was just sitting up there, then I heard the screen door open. So I tried to hurry and get down my house. My house is not that high so I jumped and landed the wrong way and started screaming. I was thinking that I was in big trouble and that my leg was going to be broken. When I hit the ground I was crying because it hurt so badly. It felt like a house dropped on my leg. My mom came to the backyard and picked me up, sat me on the bed, and got some ice and she said, "What were you doing?" And I said, "I was playing by myself and hit the bricks in the yard." Then she said, "if you hit the bricks you didn't think about the chance that you could scrape your skin off your knee?" Then I told her the truth and told her that I jumped off the roof. She said, "I am going to take all of your games away and game systems away from you for doing something stupid like that."

The lesson that I learned is not to jump off of roofs and not to lie. The advice I'd give to others is when you get very bored, don't know what to do, see a ladder, decide to climb it, when someone comes

out the house, and you don't have time to get down, so you just jump – it can end badly. You should not climb the ladder and when you are on the roof look around and see how high you are. Don't do the same as me. I learned from my mistake.

“Mine, Turtle, and the Train Guy” Artwork & Story By: Angel Williams

Mine turtle is sweet as pie, but don't step on his button or he'll explode like a cute little bomb. Mine turtle says, "Hello” to you! So one day he was building a time machine to go to Egypt for visiting and taking pictures, when all of a sudden a kid on a skateboard says to a cop, "You can't tell me what to do!" And next boom the kid explodes. That was painful to watch. I only heard the total explode but dang, that was layout, louder than the boom. Then the person say it, “I like trains”. Zoom. A train came and hit maybe six people when they were near the train guy that was too much to handle. Also he didn't talk much, so saying things like, "I like trains" is the only thing he can say to people and that didn't really say anything else. Just don't get near the Mine Turtle or the train guy or you’re next. If you are reading this then just watch out for

them. To be safe just because they look sweet DOESN'T mean you can trust them at all. Their faces are cute, but no trusting them okay? Just watch out where they will come after you owe. And watch out for that button or Mr. Mine Turtle. There was too many turtles well maybe 69 turtles people falling in exploding. It was a nightmare. The Time Machine was full of them and let out the guy who flops? Probably idea. Can't remember.

___________________________________________ “The Time I went to Mexico”

Story & Artwork By: Alexia Carrizales Gonzales I was in kindergarten and we went to Mexico. We went in the car and it almost took three days to get there. We got there, It looks very nice, but it was very hot. We were there we went to my grandma's house. It had a store because she owned the place. When I walked in the store it was filled with snacks and they were good. They were spicy chips. I just wanted to eat them all. The streets of Mexico like their sidewalks really tall, so when it rains the streets will be filled with water and we were really crazy and weird, so we got in the water with some other kids and then some kids were fishing. I was like, "How

did fish get in the water, if this is a street not a lake?” And when we had to use the bathroom it was not a

toilet and it did not smell good. No we did not use the bathroom on the floor we used it in this thing it was very interesting. At night we used to go walking to this place that sells good food and that had cool rides. I got on them it was really fun. The rides were roller coasters for little kids so we spent our summer there. It was fun, but it was time to go home. The stuff in Mexico was fun and interesting and it was a good trip with good things to do.

The other girl said what they were saying about me, so I flexed on her and she was saying, "This was a long time ago and I'm sorry Dyma it will never happen again." I flexed on her by texting her and just fussing her out. I told her I don't care or freaking like her and she said I am going to keep saying I'm sorry and I said, "I don't care about it because I don't like you. Keep my name out of your mouth. This is so petty. It's as simple as that." And she said, "I am sorry," and I was like, "Trick, please," and she said, "Why I have to be a trick?" And I was like, "Because you is one," and she was mad.

She tried to hack my Instagram account, tried to change my stuff. But me and my other friend hacked her Instagram, so now she can't log into her account. When I went into her account all I did was unblocked myself and I deleted one of her pictures and my other friend she deleted some stuff like she went in on her page, but it was all petty because I really don't care. She has her Instagram back and she is living her life. She hadn't found out that we had her page and she probably is going to be really mad when she finds out.

We also told everybody to stop talking to her because she is lame and she can't fight.. She was still

talking junk about me and my other friend as she said, "I don't like your other friend, "so my other friend wants to fight her. I told other people that I didn't like her and people said she was wrong and they wouldn't talk to her. I really don't care about her being on Instagram. She is living her life and I am going to live mine just a different way than she is going to live hers. Overall we still aren't friends and we don't talk or text or nothing and I'm over it really and I hope she is too.

“Almost Getting Hit by a Car and Shot” Artwork & Story By: Kayla Timmons

One Saturday morning I woke up into the long shower. After my shower I went downstairs to eat pancakes for dinner. It was very good, so later that morning me, my two friends, and my sister walked to the park. We got there. We did balancing tricks and talked. We were so happy till we got to the top of the hill. We stopped at the site to take a breath. Then a white car went slow and rolled down the window and shouted us. My friends were as like, "Holy shit" because they were so scared. I was too. While my friend was dialing 911 my sister and me went to go and alert to my mom what happened! We couldn't come outside till we knew it was safe. This happened last year.

Then last Tuesday me, my cousin, my sister, and my three friends, and one of my friends were

walking from the Park about to cross the road with the same white car tried to hit us. My friend was like, "You mother fucker" because she was hurt and was walking far behind us and couldn't save my sister. She called the police and my sister, cousin, and he ran to the house. My two friends ran and called the police it was really hard to try and describe them to the police. From that day we didn't go outside until we knew it was safe. My neighborhood is not ghetto. We do not have neighborhood watch just in case something happens. My dad and a couple of his friends are neighborhood watch.

Joe. First we start off with a walk. I caught on to that quickly. Then a trot which is like jogging. Next is galloping and galloping is the fastest a horse can go. Next is jumping. Jumping is a very tricky skill to master, but I still got it. Riding a horse is pretty easy. Now I know all the skills. Next was taking the horses on the trail which was pretty easy. Now I am a true rider.

“An Adventure”

By: Eyitemi Hammond My two older cousins and I make our way up the colossal Alaskan mountain. We saw holes in the ground that you could fall down into. We started climbing and there was this waterfall. We started to climb the waterfall. We made our way up the slippery block of ice. It was a treacherous hike. The mountain looked like a big piece of fudge. I said calmly "This is not as hard as I thought it was going to be." My cousin said, "This is not even the hard part." We took a brief break; we sat down and ate raisins, dried peaches, and almonds. We walked up the hill and my cousin said, "This is the hard part." There were gravel and sharp pieces of rock. We were about to climb this Alaskan mountain. It's the last level of climbing you could do without gear.

“My First Football Game”

Artwork & Story By: Darius Channer

Once when playing football for the first time I was six years old and really didn't know how to play football. I was a RB, running back and WR, wide receiver. Then my father told me to start watching football on TV so I can know all the plays and the calls. Then when I got back on the field. I played the game like it was on TV. I made a TD. My coach was proud of me. My father was, too. When practice was over my coach at the next game said that we will do the same thing and you be the starter. When I went back I was happy. Then the game started and I ran the same play and it worked. We scored on the first play of the game and the whole team was excited and happy then we won the game twentyeight to fourteen. Then we went home and I took a long shower. Then I started getting better at it and coach said, "You are the best on the team." And then my dad called me a star.

“Making Music” Artwork & Story By: Omarre' Stinson

What do people do when they make music? They rap, they do any kind of things in music. You can make music by rapping. When I was five years old I started playing drums. My parents didn’t make me. I wanted to do it. I wanted to do it myself. I started playing because I saw my brother playing drums and he wasn't that good. Now he is just rapping. He's better at that than playing drums. I just knew how to play drums. I was improving, coming up with new stuff and that was my favorite part about

drumming. My favorite drum is the small drums and the snare drums. I like fast long when I'm playing. I learned to read music at school and I was in a band. I hope to go back into band that year. I want to have a career in music and write music especially rap music.

“The Great Fail” Story & Artwork By: Kevin Perez Soto

It all started when I was in the classroom… It was about to be 9:30 and I couldn't wait to go to the

gym. The bell rang and I was going to gym fast. I went in there; I put my clothes on, and waited until the gym teacher told us to go outside. The gym teacher always had this rule to run two laps around the track before playing sports because he wants our legs to warm up. Then it started.

Indent We were on the track waiting until the gym teacher told us to run. "RUN!!!" he said. We all started running. 10 seconds later… I fell. I couldn't get back up. I was lying there down like a gorilla punched me in the face. Two minutes later… They were trying to wake me up. They were like "Kevin. Kevin. Wake up man!!!" Then I woke up. I couldn't feel my muscles. It was like everything worked but my eyes. So then

“The Adventure of New York City” Story & Artwork By: Jenny Sierra

One summer morning on July 2, 2011 I was packing for a trip/adventure to New York City to see

my cousins, grandma, and grandpa. I was so excited to go on the plane and travel with my family to the fair, and travel around the city getting to know people! I wanted to communicate with the people in the city talk to them and make friends! I looked forward to traveling to different places with my family. It's a great thing to discover new things all around the world :) Enjoy!!!

Three hours later I was ready to get on the plane with my sister and my parents. Once I hopped on the plane and got comfortable I began reading a novel about New York places! Me and my sister also wrote gift cards for my cousins and grandpa and grandma and it was really nice to write nice things to your family Once we were done me and my sister looked up images to send to my friends back home! The images were about some buildings, people performing, and stores all around New York City!! :) One hour later my sister and I fell asleep and my wonderful parents were reading novels about love, action, mystery and all kinds of stuff. :)

Anyway, half an hour later me and my sister woke up I asked my mom if we were close and she said, "Only 15 more minutes." I was really excited to arrive and travel with my family around the city. Also before hopping off the waiter brought us orange juice and a ham sandwich with a cute puppy toy and lunch was so delicious! 10 minutes later I saw buildings and lots of people it was New York. I was excited I even ran out the plane when it stopped! Anyway we grabbed our belongings thanked the waiter and took the bus to my cousin's! While we were riding we had a great view. :)

Once I arrived I saw my cousins. They ran up to me and gave me a chocolate bar saying, "I miss you." We all hugged my cousins and they invited me inside and we sat down. I also gave my grandma and grandpa a hug with a card and candy. I gave each of my cousins a big lollipop saying, "Number one cousin!” They loved it a lot :) We ate cupcakes and played again :) <3 One hour later my parents said, "Hop in the car so we can travel around the city." I could not wait :) It was fun :) We had a great time :) <3 We lived happily ever after. <3 The End !!! <3

“Football Defense” Story & Artwork By: Zydez Collins

I was playing football on the field and it was a team called, "Cary Chargers," and their colors were white and green. They were a tough team to beat. But when we got on the defensive line I blew them out and one dude was very bad at playing for a good team he was on. And when the quarterback said, "Hike," I did a run and I threw the player like tissue. This other dude he had tackled me when I was running the ball and I was on the 1 yard line and I was hurting, but I was okay. And I was mad so when I got on defense I hit his leg so hard when I tackled him his leg broke and he had to go to the hospital. And this player on his team got mad

and we started fighting and we both had to sit out for the rest of the game. We won seventyeight to thirty. I play running back for offense and defensive end for defense and we blew them out by the score. People were reacting by talking and I was thinking at least we have someone out of the game so we can win easier. The coach didn't do anything to me for hitting him in the leg because I was just trying to tackle him in a good spot. There is nothing I will do next time differently because they are a tough team and they have good players.

Over summer I was on YouTube watching makeup videos. And then I clicked on this video of this beautiful and amazing girl named Bethany Moto who is known as (macbarbie09). So I clicked on her video of how to do a Nicki Minaj look for Halloween! When I finished watching her video I loved it, so I kept on watching more and more until my laptop died. So then the next day I woke up, ate breakfast, showered, and got some of my mom's makeup to do my own videos. I got ready and started… Click! "Well, hello guys... My name is Kimberly and

today's video is going to be about me showing you guys how to do a girly makeup look so I hope you guys enjoy and let's get started." I showed the girls how to apply the makeup. Then I published my video

“Grandma’s House” By: Rashard

My grandma was in the bed and I was four years old. She was talking about how she loved me and

she died right before my eyes. I went to my mom and told her she passed away. Two days later the house was on fire and I was in the house hiding. I as eight years old and I was scared of fire trucks. My mom’s brother got all of his sisters to sign a paper when they were little and sold my grandma’s house. He did not give them any money. He was being greedy and they have not talked to him in five or more years. My uncle got a girl husky dog, a big house, and a Ferrari with the money.

“When I Got in My First Fight” By: India Howard

The time I got in my first fight I was five and my cousin had came over to my house to see me fight this fat girl that lived down the street from me. My cousin was getting me hyped. She was, "Beat her ass! She been talking all that shit, you better get her!" I just ran up and gave her the ones (combination punching with fists), leaped on her, grabbed her by the hair, and dragged her to the field. When she got up my cousin ran up and kicked her down. And then she started screaming and my mom came out and pulled me off of her. I had her short little ugly hair stuck between my fingers. I was so mad at my mom and because I was only five I could do nothing. I got a whooping. My advice to fiveyearolds is do not fight because you might get a whooping.

“When I Had My First Kiss” By: India Howard

The time I had my first kiss was when I started my new school CC Spaulding. This cute boy

named Darius told me he liked me. His hair was in dreads and he was lightskinned with really pink lips. We started going out but, by the way, I was in kindergarten and we went out for recess. We went under the playground slide and kissed. My teacher came and we acted like we were playing a game. She left and we got up from under the slide and played with our friends. We went inside and we actually went out for like a week. My advice to fiveyearolds is in kindergarten your relationships don't last long, so don't get overexcited.

“Suicidal Thoughts & Cutting” Story & Artwork By: Jennifer Solorzano

There was a day during summer vacation that my parents had problems and also family problems. Those moments I felt really worthless… Because I had a feeling that I was the problem of why my parents argued. I was 11 years old, basically a year ago. I just felt like dying… I actually tried to commit suicide… There was a day when my mom just said that I should learn from others, and I don't like when they compare my flaws with someone else’s… I felt so down when they always said things to me that really broke me. And that's where I was in my room crying, and

then I stood up, looked at myself all my mascara was over my face and I told myself, "Jennifer it’s time for you to stop suffering and going through this bullshit." So I went to the kitchen and got a knife… And went running upstairs and then sat in the corner crying and then that's when I grabbed a knife and started cutting my skin open… The blood was dripping down… But it really didn't hurt at all… It actually took the pain away… It took the pain away because when I saw the blood drip, I felt that the blood was my problems and since the blood went down I felt that my problems got out of me too. And that's how cutting began an addiction. When I saw my scars fade away, I felt lost without them… So I kept my knife in my closet and I took it out and cut myself. My two closest friends Cynthia and Gissel saw my scars and asked me what was going on and I told them my family and parent problems and how I felt like shit. They told me to stop, that it wasn't good, that I had a lot ahead of me… I had a future but at that moment I didn't understand that. Somehow they told my mom and then my mom made an appointment with the doctor. And then I went and I had to go twice a week, to try and stop. It worked for a month… But after that I started cutting again without anyone knowing… The doctor was a mentor who treated family problems and gave me therapy. Something that made it stop was that I fell in depression again and I didn’t care what they said about me. It was like the knife was my only best friend. It works for a month… But after that I started cutting again without anyone knowing and I didn't care what they said about me. It was like the knife was my only best friend. But on Instagram I found an account called (Quotedbybrooke) and the quotes on their page kept on motivating me to stop cutting. So I actually did. Some quotes that help me the best were, "It's not about letting the storm pass away, it's about learning how to dance in the storm." And also one of the favorites is, "Be a person who one day a kid would be thankful to you that you didn't give up." And one that really touched my heart was, “Would your eightyearold child be proud of you?" Then I thought about that and said, "No." So then I decided to change my life around. But something that will never fade is my scars on my left arm. And I actually think I'm a happy girl again and I won't keep on faking a smile. And also that I

found a way out of my problems. I want to live now because I know I have a future ahead of me. And my baby nephew Abraham he's like my baby brother. He is the reason I live and smile. Abraham has become a very important person in my life. Since my mom has taken care of him I've taken care of him. And thank God yes my parent problems have stopped and we are that happy family again.

“One Special Day” Story & Artwork By: Jennifer Solorzano

One special day for me was October 23, 2014 because my nephew Abraham was born… I felt so excited. It was just a wonderful feeling. I had never been so excited for a baby being born. But that day I was. We went to the hospital. He wasn't born yet until like an hour later. Then we had to leave Sam, but then the next day, Deejay (the mother) went to my aunt’s house and we went and saw baby Abraham. He was such a cutie like I swear I think I cried of happiness. Then after like a month Deejay went back to work and my mom started taking care of Abraham. Ever since she started taking care of

him I have become very close with him. Every day I come from school I go straight to him and he is over there smiling. He is so far five months old and I could tell you if you see him you'll fall in love with him. April 23rd he will be six months. I just can't wait until he can start crawling and talking. He has become the reason I live. Abraham plays such an important role in my life. He has made me feel the like the best Auntie ever.

“Our Haunted House” Story & Artwork By: Namir Stone

Last Saturday my two cousins and I chose to watch a horror movie with no lights on. So we watched the movie while I went to go and get popcorn. Then I got back and when Shon turned around, and I made a scary laugh, both of my cousins yelled and were scared. Then we went back watching the movie! We heard something in the closet, so we paused the movie to see what it was. It was my dog, so we started the movie back up. We were watching the movie and my door opened by itself so I closed my door back and it opened again. The wind was blowing and so it closed it. We sat back down and then someone knocked on the window. The thing that was knocking on the

window was a tree that was getting it. When the movie went off the lights went off so it was dark. When the lights came back on one of my cousins was gone. Nasir and I were the last two left. The light went off again and I heard a big boom. When the light came back on I went upstairs and went out the window. I

“Climbing a Tree”

Story & Artwork By: James Keith

When I play basketball outside, my friends touched me on the shoulder. I turned around fast and

he showed me this tall tree. It was tall and it had a lot of branches. And my friend and I decided to climb the tree. And so we climbed, climbed, and climbed and soon as we got to the top, the branch broke and I fell on a soft tree. Then I climbed down the soft tree and landed on the ground. I was thinking when I felt I was going to get in trouble. And we never climbed up the tree ever again. My advice is that you shouldn't do it because you will get hurt.

“Trip to New York” By: Tarrance Holloway

I went to New York on June 5, 2013. I had fun. My mom told me to take pictures on the way there,

but I was asleep most of the way. I got some pictures, but they were when I was in New York. However I got no pictures on the way there. I was mad but at least I got to go and got some pictures and had fun. I will like to go somewhere else like Florida or France. I had fun on my trip. I would like to have more fun like I did on June 5, 2013. I miss some pics but not that much. I missed about a few like going over the ocean or pictures of the spray painting on the walls in New York. I got pics of my family and I got pics of the tall buildings and pics of the insides of the buildings and other stuff. I miss my family in New York and I would like to go back and see them again. Here I am in 2015 and summer is on its way. I might get to see them again on my birthday June 18. If I do it would be so much fun and the best birthday ever.

downstairs. My mom made me and my two older brothers some pancakes. After that I went upstairs to play GTA5. I had turned on my PS4 and I was playing online. I had to shoot this dude and he was like, and FU. I was playing for eight hours and at five I got off to go to outside. At 8 o'clock I came in the house, took my shower, and played GTA5. I did a mission for $1 million so I completed the mission, so I got it. I went to the store and I purchased a mask.

One day when I first scored in my basketball game I had shot the ball. I missed and got fouled. I went to the freethrow line and I was scared as if Tigers were after me. So I made one free throw and missed one. When I missed the shot I felt like I let down the team, but I was happy, as if it was my birthday. I was scared because it was my first time at the free throw line. My fear went away when I closed my eyes and opened them. My

I was in school and my friend told me that she is going to have her birthday and Wheels. She told me that I should go. I didn't know what to say because my mom wouldn’t let me go by myself. So when it was time to go to the buses and get home I was still thinking about it. When I got home I went to my room and told my mom about it. She said, "Okay." I was so happy, but then she said, "I was going to go with you, your brother, your aunt, and your cousin.”I said, "Okay as long as I go it is fine." The next day I was very excited and I told my friend she said, "it will be so much fun. "The next day I went to the store with my mom because we were looking for a present for my friend Juliya . It was Friday and I went to school waiting for Saturday. The thing that I did know was that there was going to be a surprise waiting for me. My mom told me that I was going to go by myself. I was so happy, but when we got there we forgot the money so we had to go back home. Once I got in I saw my friend Juliya and gave her my present and I told her happy birthday. My other friends were there too. We were having so much fun. Then it was time for me to go so I told everybody bye and went outside waiting for my mom's car to come and pick me up. I told them that maybe next month we can all go and have fun.

“Trip to New York” Story & Artwork By: Brittanny CureRamirez

I was at my house when my mom asked me, "Do you want to go to New York to visit your uncle and your cousins?" I said, "Yes." But what I didn't know was if there was any more space for me. The next day, I told my other uncle and asked him if I would go too? He said, "Yes." I was so happy. So the next day, I started packing up to go there for a week. Later that day my mom told me that she was not going to come or my brother and I was sad. But my mom told me that I could just go by myself. I said, "Ok," with a sad face because I was going to miss them. So we went to New York the next day and I saw all of them. I took so many pictures to show my

mom. When it was time for us to go I was happy because I was going to see my mom and my brother, but sad because I was going to leave. Once I got back home I was very happy to see my mom and brother. I told my mom that the next time we go to New York for a visit that we are all going to go. She said, "Okay." And when it was time to go to New York again we all went and we went when it was Christmas. I was very happy to have everyone there in New York.

“Borderlands 2” By: Anonymous

Borderlands 2 is a high epic venture game. There are four Vault Hunters: Commando, Siren, Gunzerker,

and last but not least Zer0. Vault hunters are people that search on the hunt for vaults. After unlocking one Vault you reveal tons of Vaults. Starting that B2 as in Borderland 2 campaign you get to choose one of the vault hunters. I choose Commando because the Commando skills are a autosentry. I thought the autosentry would be helpful and come in use because it's like having an extra gun on you. After picking a Vault Hunters you choose your skin color and outfit. I personally did not customize my character I just skipped to the campaign. When you enter the campaign there will be a video. Just watch the video and continue on beginning the campaign. Then you start. The train you were on blew up because it was a setup on the train and it was loaded with dynamite. Next you wake up with a CLPT 4 bot also known as Claptrap. Claptrap says when you wake up, "Handsome Jack's been away." Then the biopsies. You get up and he says again "Wait you are alive. Now I can get off this glacier, Pandora.". After giving your mini map and health stats you stand up and you need to follow Claptrap to this place. You were given a mini map and health bar by Claptrap. Once you and Claptrap reach this place Claptrap will go to the door and say, "Open!!" He should also say something like, "Have to keep these Bullymongs out." Claptrap's door will open and you have to follow him and usually a minute later I saw that Knuckle Dragger will rip Claptrap’s eye out and there will be a pistol in a safe. You and Claptrap have to go in Kiel and retrieve Claptrap’s eye from the Knuckle Dragger. You have to kill Knuckle Dragger like I did. and then retrieve Claptrap's eye and also you can farm Knuckle Dragger to get the legendary weapon. I'll tell what I did through this story. I killed Knuckle Dragger with the pistol I got from the safe and Claptrap's place. Retrieved Claptrap’s eye then I followed Claptrap up a side of the hill and there was a grate. Claptrap will go to the front of the scanner of the grate and he will say, "Open." When the scanner started to scan the stat said, "Intruder detected." The create will triple lock and the Angel will come..Angel

is Handsome Jack's daughter. Handsome Jack is trying to open a Vault to summon a monster. An ancient monster. Jack summons the monster then most likely Pandoro is over. Or if someone else has to stop Jack from opening the Vault and if he does then we have to kill Jack and stop the Warrior. Most likely we will stop him and the Warrior, but we have to get to the sanctuary and get ready to battle. There is about 60 missions but we are going to skip them all and go to the end of the game. We skipped boring missions and went straight to the real action. We are in Handsome Jack's bunker where he keeps a special person like someone that is being pumped with eridium. Eridium is alien money that we used to purchase stuff at a shop in the sanctuary. Angel is the special person that is being pumped with eridium. If Angel dies then Jack has to find someone else that charges on eridium like a Siren. Just if Jack gets a Siren we would have to act fast. Once I got to sanctuary I could teleport to where Jack is located with his Siren to summon the Warrior. I have defeated all Handsome Jack's guards and soldiers. You have to teleport to Heroes Past. When I reached euros pass you spot in front of Hyperion Guards with weapons. I killed everyone and got to the Warrior. When I reached where the warrior was and Handsome Jack, Handsome Jack said something like, “Oh it's over now." It took me around 40 minutes to kill Jack and the Warriors because I was going true Vault Hunter mode which is harder than normal mode. If you are on a harder campaign then you are most likely comment to get a legendary weapon. Legendary weapons are the most powerful weapons in the game. You can take legendary weapons on Borderlands Presequel and forge them together to get even better weapons. I killed Jack then he said, "This isn't over.” Then boom it's over. He summoned the Warrior then boom I killed the Warrior in less than an hour. If you kill the Warrior you can eventually farm him for a legendary weapon, but there is a small chance he may not. When you kill Jack he will drop his mask. You're done with the game.

Every night I thought of what my party would be like. But then the next day I went to Wheels to have my party and everyone came. We played a basketball game of Wheels and started to laugh. We got ice cream and two hot dogs. We all had a great time and went home. The end.

I was better than him. So he started to get cocky and I started focusing more and we got to a tie to seventeen to seventeen score. We were only going to shoot twentyone. I made him fall when I crossed him and scored. Now we were at eighteen to seventeen. I may need a two pointer from the threepoint line because we were going by ones and I won twentyone to seventeen. Then he got mad and he went, quote you cheated quote, and asked for a rematch. And so I gave him a rematch and we went to fifteen. We played by twos and threes, so I kept missing for him and he got to five. Then I made a twopoint shot and a three point shot and I have five. It was five to five. I was crossing him over and shooting and I got to ten. He started shooting threes and started making his shots. It came to ten and twelve and then I shot a three and missed. He shot a three and made it. It was thirteen for him and twelve for me. Then I shot a three and made it and won. The final score was my brother thirteen and me fifteen. It felt good to win for a second time.

“The Time I Watched a Horror Movie” Story & Artwork By: Taniyya Richardson

This is what happened... The driver was driving and he pulled over because there was a man in the road. So the driver got out and the guy just killed the man and got in his truck and rode off. Then there were these like 18yearold kids who were driving and they kept messing with the man in the truck. They were slowing down so the man got angry and he hit the teenagers and they were mad. I was mostly scared at the end because they put the killer in this machine that cut his fingers and stuff off, but the crazy part is that the man who got cut up was still alive. This movie was called, “Joyride 3." Thumbs up because it is scary, but it is so good you want to keep watching it like three to five times a day. So back to the story, the adults went to the gas station and split up into different cars. There were two girls one with blonde hair and another with brown hair and the boys had the same exact color and their hair was the same way as the girls. So the people with blonde hair they found the junkyard and so the killer just started calling them and said, "I need you to meet me at the junkyard." He said, "I'm already here." And then all of a sudden the light cut off. He just drove off with the teenager in the car and he drove him to the place on the side of the road and hooked up his machine and cut off his fingers and blood flows out like a volcano was erupting. And so he got the girl and he put her on the front of the truck and he was going and going until her body got caught on the light and ripped her right in half. So both the girl and the boy were

“The Time I Fell and Cut my Arm Playing Basketball” By: Gualberto Rivera

I was at the basketball court not so far from my house. We were playing a game to sixteen by twos.

The other team was winning by two and the score was fourteen to twelve. My team and the other team were missing. My team was missing then the other team made it. We missed again. Then the guy grabbed the ball and I ran up to him to do defense. Then he tripped me and I cut my elbow. I think we lost because we were missing three pointers and layups. When the other team was missing I thought we had a chance of winning. I was playing point guard. After I cut my elbow the other team made it. My advice to other people on my team was that we can still win. It made me a better player.

I thought he still might let me go, but noooo. So I had to stay home all week and just make money by cutting grass and I didn't even have my phone. So next time I'm going to try to get good grades so I can go.

Not long after that terrifying moment we got my brother and sister dressed and went to my mom’s friend’s house. Then my grandma called to ask if we have seen my aunt, my mom replied with a question, "No?" So we rushed to her house. Then we got a call from my aunt that she was in the hospital. At first I was upset and mad. September 3, 2012 my Aunt Ashley Laney was in a coma about three months and has not talked or walked in three years. The first time I learned that I can see and feel things before they happen was when I was 5 years old. I could tell we were moving. I feel good about having these abilities. I would tell others with these sixth sense abilities to see things before, otherwise to use what you have.

Today I'm here to tell you about the campaign Borderland 2. June 4, 2014 I bought the game B2 from Durham, North Carolina. After buying B2 on June 5 when I got home I started to take a major drift in gaming. B2 characters: Berzerker, Commando, and Siren, Zer0. For B2 I choose Commando because I felt I could use his skills which were Sentry Turret. After beginning B2 and picking up character I met Claptrap, let me introduce him to you Claptrap is a CLP4bot, also known as Hansen object helpers. Claptrap and I met one Pandora, a small planet being destroyed by a super satellite called Helios. Me and

Claptrap have to get to you sanctuary to meet Roland and Lilith. Roland defeated Handsome Jack once and then betrayed him. And somehow Jack has risen back from the dead and now he is trying to summon a Warrior a legendary monster known to never be killed. When Commando is to reach Sanctuary and joined the Crimson Raiders. After getting to find Jack, he and his Warrior will battle.

“Basketball” Story & Artwork By: Jayden Moore

I woke up thinking about what is going to happen later today. I was pumped it was the last day of the season before playoffs. My team was ten and two after losing Friday to the Bears. Today we were going against the Hawks. We have beaten the Hawks both times we played them so this just might be easy. It is one 45 so now it is time for me to get ready for my big game. My grandpa yells out my name, "Jayden, it's time to go." I'm with my grandpa

because my mom works on the weekends. We get in the car. My grandpa tells me about the advantages we have over them and what I have to do to be better at the basketball game.

When we get there he drops me off at the sidewalk and I turned to the gym while he parks. I get to the gym and they are ready start the game and we were up by six. The score was six to zero. And the coach said, "The next damn ball you are in the game." I got in the game and I took over. By the end of the quarter we already had twentytwo points, seven assists, and two steals. Most of the shots I took were very fast and smooth like a snake. Even though I was having a good time at the game we were losing fortynine to fiftyone and time was almost up in the game.

The other team passed the ball with twelve seconds left. We could lose this game and still be in

the playoffs, but we have to win to stop them from going into the playoffs. They run the ball up the court. They pass it to the person that I'm guarding but he is not paying attention and the ball went out of bounds, and the coach called a timeout. We all went to the huddle and he set up a play. Coach said, "So there is eight seconds left on the clock, so they are going to try and play hard defense." "We are going to pass the ball to Jayden." I stopped and said, "So you are counting on me to win the game?" Coach told me, "Yes... You are our star player." Now the time out was up and we had come into the game. The referee blew the whistle and the game was back on. My teammate passed me the ball and the time started. I ran up the

court, I crossed up, and went straight for the three and it was two seconds left. I shot the ball and it rolled out of the rim and they won. I was devastated and disappointed at myself. When I got home I laid in my bed and cried. My grandpa came in the room and told me that we are still in the playoffs and the season is not over.

“The Time I Broke My Arm” Story & Artwork By: Jayden Moore

My mom, two brothers, sister, and I were on our way to church. We were all in the car quiet so this was my time to go to sleep. I'm asleep and not worrying about what's going on. I wake up halfway and went back to sleep and within one second I was looking at the taillights of the back of a red SUV. My mom stomps on the brakes and the car jerked back but she hit the back of the car and my arm flew up and the airbag hit my left arm and it broke. I woke up in the back of the EMS with my mom crying. They said I was going to the hospital. I have a broken arm and have a lot of scars. They took me and once we got to the hospital they took xrays of my arm and told me where I broke my arm. I was also told that I needed stitches in the corner of my lip. They said I was going to be put on medicine so that they can pop my arm back into place. I was okay and that was the end of that. That's how I broke my arm.

The first experience through Minecraft was kind of freaky. At first I didn't know how to play or what the rules were. Then I realized that there were no rules and that I could do whatever I wanted. Then I started to walk around the different biomes. But before I did that I went to a creative world and saw that there were different types of blocks. From water blocks to diamond blocks. At first I didn't know what to build, and then I wanted to build a house so I made a basic house. After I finish my house I wanted to do more, so I tried out the survival world. My survival experience was so different for my creative world experience. First of all you have to get your own blocks and you have to hunt for food and after survive. Then when night comes I started to see zombies and other mobs. At

first the zombie came towards me and then started to hit me and I then saw Creeper and he started to shake and then blew up and I died. And so I started to get better and I figured you can make a different items. So one time I made a bed and clicked on it and I skipped the night, so I started to skip the night to

prevent from dying. And then I found out a glitch on how to duplicate thing so I won't have to waste any resources. And now I am coming close to becoming an expert. My advice is that if you are new to Minecraft all you have to do is open your mind and create whatever you want from a house to a castle. The best secret that I have is that I am in my crafting geek!! Oh, and don't forget about Enderman. This helps you to move your blocks. If you tried to kill them they can teleport which makes them harder to kill, and if you kill them they give you Enderpearls which let you teleport. So good luck on your first world until next time :)

“The Game” Story & Artwork By: Mario Rand

When I made the game point shot I was playing basketball with my brother. When I was playing he passed the ball to me and I made the shot, so it was the end of the match and he gave me the ball. I took the ball down the court then the time was running out. When I got down there I took the shot, the clock went off, and then I and my brother won again. I was so happy that we won the game. The end!

“Minecraft” (Experience) By: Luchiano Burela Parker

This is my story about the first experience I had with Minecraft. It was around 2014 and I learned

from my cousin. It is now 2015 and I am still new, but I am gaining more tasks and better skills. Like on Minecraft there are objects like a crafting table, chest, wood, sheep, pigs, cows, creepers, zombies, spiders, hinderman's, and many more. Minecraft is like you can join different worlds. You can choose differently and change to survival. In Minecraft you can make different things like for example you can make wooden swords, out of wallet and a crafting table, you can make a bed out of wood, sheep. You have to have a chest to store things. You can make a house out of brick or some type of brick, and you can make weapons. Some things I made in Minecrafting table, bed, pickaxe, sword, and iron such as armor!!

“Basketball” By: Keeshawn Leach

Basketball is my favorite sport because I like it every time we go out of town. Like we are going to

the beach for a game next weekend and I and my brother will play on the same basketball team and we are good together. I was 10 years old when I started playing basketball. I play in positions one, two, three, four, and five. I and my brother play on the same team. Sometimes we do like it. However I did not pass him the ball because he did not pass me the ball one time and that caused problems on the court for us.

“Dating Drama” Story & Artwork By: Destinie Watson

I had a BFF that had a boyfriend named Joe and her name was Angel and they were like one of the best girlfriend and boyfriend. Hey, my name is Destinie and his name is Veejay. That is my boyfriend. Now they met us because he is her BFF named Shy, before they were going out she called him best friend in the end she fell in love and then she walked up to him. And she said, "I really, really, really, really like you," and then he said, "Let me think about this." When he got home he looked for her on oovoo and kik and then when he found it, they started talking behind Shy’s back and then the next day Shy and Joe broke up. And then the next week later Angel and

Joe started going out and that's how they started going out. And now I and my boyfriend started going out and he went out with my BFF her name is Kayla. They went out before me and he started going out. And then one day he asked for my oovoo and kik. And I gave it to her and one day I was at home he oovoo’d me and said, "I broke up with Kayla. So do you want to go out with me?" and I said quote "Yes." And then a week later we told everyone and so on and so on and that is how it have tobe?, period. My advice to people when it comes to dating in school is don’t go out with someone that is going out with me. The lesson I learned is don't tell someone that you go out with someone when you know you don't.

“She Is Not My Friend No More”

Story & Artwork By: Shan'Ea Wilson

In the summer my granddad died and I say I wanted to start that cutting myself. In the sixth grade I

said I was not going to pass but I could not give up and I said I will not give up. And then we have lots of drama. It had all started in 2014 when I was friends with Angel and then she had a friend named Destinie come along and it had gotten bad for me. That made me feel bad and so I was going to fight but Angel said no. She was okay and then one day we were not at school and then she said that it was over with us and I said we are not friends okay? Then I let go. So then I got a notebook and wrote a lot of stuff to help me get over it. I love Angel. My advice is to find your real friends.

“The Swim” Story & Artwork By: Shan'Ea Wilson

In the summer we went to the pool and an ant had bit me and I had

jumped in the pool and I almost drowned in 4 1/2 feet. So then I was scared about what happened later. I am so mad that my mom said, "No more pool." Now I can swim in the 4 1/2 feet because that day I said I was going to learn an idea. So now I know how to swim and that it was a fire ant that bit me. I would advise people to learn now how to swim just in case something happens like that.

“Cutting” Story & Artwork By: Shan'Ea Wilson

I started cutting myself in fourth grade. People said, “You should cut yourself.” When I cut Myself. I always get mad. And then cut myself.

I can cut my arm and legs. No one likes me. Lots of people said kill myself. I want to. I heart people. Do not Do it. It’s not Worth it. Suicide. Do not Go Out My Room To the Outside World.

On my birthday June 25 my mom bought me three pairs of shoes, five outfits, and a Play station two. I was up all that night playing Madden 07, 09, 10 with my friends. And that night I was throwing up hot dogs, pizza, chicken, and liquor. I played at 12:00 and my total gaming time was 14 hours. I went to play my game and I went to sleep until 3:30 pm.

One day I was in the room with my brothers and my brother asked me to do a backflip off the coffee table. When I hit the back flip I hit my head. I was passed out for 30 minutes. My brother timed it. Then I woke up and my nose was bleeding and I had an egg on my head. When my mom got home she was cursing out my brothers and then she took me to the hospital. I had to stay two nights because of the lump on my head then I came home the next day and we had a party.

“Spooky House” By: Lesley Escobar

I live in a two floor house and it is a calm place and beautiful, but a few years back when I was like three or four years old we moved into the same neighborhood just that it was not in the same house. So I was watching TV downstairs in the living room when she finished watching her favorite TV show. Suddenly we heard a door shut really loudly. My mom grabbed a knife and ran upstairs and went to look everyplace. I was so scared to stay alone so I asked my mom if I could go upstairs with her, but she said no. I was wishing that my mom would be like okay when she came back down. I ran to the downstairs

bathroom and stayed in there. I peeked out through the door because I had heard someone come down the stairs. Through the white walls I saw a "shadow!" but a good thing was that it was just my mom. I asked my mom who was upstairs but she said nobody. That afternoon my dad came home from work and we told him what had happened. So my dad went every day after his work to look for new places to live in a house. Each night I was scared so I couldn't sleep. But like a month later my dad found a medium house and he bought it. The last night we slept in our haunted house we heard the toilets flush all night and also we heard every room door closing very hard. We went to our new home it was beautiful and quiet. The first night we spent there it was good. Two years later we moved to the same neighborhood but not the same house. We moved to another two houses and we still live in that neighborhood. We have a" happy" life.

“Ghosts” By: Christina Pena

My mom and dad went out for a date and my mom left us home with a big brother and a big sister. Me and my sister went downstairs and watched a movie and my brothers were upstairs. My sister and I were downstairs watching Annabelle. Then when the movie ended me and my sister Raquel shut off the TV and then I and my sister saw somebody behind us and it wasn't our brothers. Then I ran upstairs to get my older brother and tell him that someone is downstairs in our house and he went downstairs. I and my little brother went with him. My sister was scared and just went under the blanket and then out

of nowhere the power came off and we didn't know what was going on. We got scared and just stayed in my big brother's room until my mom came home. Then she came home and asked us what happened and we said that I and my sister were watching a movie and we saw person behind us and my mom asked us if we were okay and we said yes. Then we told her the power came off in the house. Then we went to sleep and (this) once it's all sleep together and we do. So then at 3:00 am we heard a big bang upstairs and we went upstairs. It was nothing so then we went downstairs and went to sleep.

When my mom and dad went to work me and my little brothers were home by ourselves and then I

went to the bathroom to take a shower and my brothers were in their room playing and then we heard a noise downstairs and we got scared. Then my sister and brother came home and asked us what was happening and we told them. Then we asked her mom and dad to get my uncle because he is a pastor and then he came to see what is going on. We told him that we think that it is a ghost in our house. He looked around and said there was a ghost in my house and then he took some things that might be making something do this. And the next morning my uncle was gone because of something and we were so sad.

Then five weeks later we had a funeral and then when it was over we all went to my house and we

talked. We were wondering what was going on. Then our mom – called on another pastor and we asked him why did this happen and the pastor said that the only reason that happened to him is that the ghost

thought he was in the way. And my sister and I were not the only ones to hear the ghost or see the ghost. My brother saw them and the ghost was in my brother’s room and they got scared and they were in shock and scared. And how did it go away is, my other uncle got the pastor and the pastor came, but we went on a vacation while the pastor put salt or something I was not sure. And when we came back two weeks later it was gone and it was time to move on for good and never come back because we could have a new life.

URBANESE DICTIONARY By: 6th Grade Students of Neal Middle School

Welcome to the Urbanese Dictionary created by Neal Middle School 6th Graders! Here you will find words that students used in their writing. Every 6th Grade English Language Arts (ELA) student was encouraged to not let spelling or context of the a given word hang them up in theory writing. Because I fluently speak what I refer to as, “Urbanese” I assured them that I could translate their work by code switching. The most important things was for these students, many of whom fear writing, get their stories onto the page without fearing judgment. As you will see, these words are uniquely spelled just how they are spoken, heard, and processed by the students. Now, open your mind and read along. You’re sure to diversify your language skills and expand your cultural awareness.

Enjoy & Thank you in advance for having an open mind &
