Thermal Store Energy Bank
The Evinox Thermal Store Energy Bank is the perfect choice for storing energy for use in renewable heating and hot water systems. The innovative heat transfer technology within the Thermal Store transfers energy generated by renewable sources via the heat exchanger to the Energy Bank for the fast supply of hot water. With standard tanks ranging from 350L to 3000L there is a capacity to suit most sizes of system.
The Thermal Store can be used to capture energy from a variety of renewable and fossil fuel heat sources, such as solar, heat pumps, biomass and CHP, and is capable of providing hot water at varying temperatures to suit different heat emitters within a building. For example the Thermal Store can supply an underfloor heating system that may require 40°C, radiators requiring 70°C and hot water at 55°C, all from the same unit.
Unique TechnologyThe Thermal Store Energy Bank includes unique patented technology that enables the hot water to be transferred from the bottom to the top of the store via a heat transfer tube, where it can then be used almost immediately without waiting for the remaining water in the tank to be heated. This ensures for example that there is hot solar heated water available for an early morning shower, even after just a short exposure to the morning sun.
In contrast, with traditional solar buffer storage tanks, the solar heated water enters from the bottom of the buffer, and rises to the top of the tank from where it can be drawn off. The disadvantage of this process is that it takes a very long time for the whole tank to be heated, from the bottom to the top, and only when all of the water is heated can it be used to provide the building with hot water.
To circulate water from the bottom to the top of a storage tank, other manufactures use a variety of circulating pumps and control systems. These items require energy and maintenance, which in turn produce extra costs. This is not required in the Evinox Thermal Store
• Unique technology ensures the tank is fully charged to the required temperature in a short space of time, even when only a limited amount of energy is available.
• Integrates effectively with all renewable energy sources.
• Through the principle of gravity working from top to bottom, an optimised use of energy is guaranteed.
• Excess energy can be used for heating purposes.
• The heat transfer technology does not require any circulating pumps, control systems or additional heat exchangers, making it a low energy system.
• Using a storage tank for heating water reduces environmental impact.
• Instantaneous fresh hot water is provided without the possibility of legionella.
• Winner of H&V News Award for Industrial and Commercial Product of the Year when launched, and a finalist for The Sustainable Building Services Awards.
• Stores can be manufactured in tailor-made sizes up to 20000 litres to suit any application.
Benefits
Thermal Store Energy Bank
Fresh hot and cold water provided when requiredIn conventional buffer tanks where water is not replaced with a fresh supply on a daily basis, the quality of water cannot be guaranteed to be clean, fresh and free from bacteria. After just 24 hours the quality of stored water considerably deteriorates.
This can lead to a risk when showering, in that any bacteria present can be inhaled, causing health problems.
The Thermal Store ensures that water is continually circulated and only heated as’ required to provide fresh, clean and safe hot and cold water.
Thermal Store heat exchanger• Outer skin constructed from copper to provide excellent thermal heat transfer
• Inner skin is tin-coated to prevent the build-up of bacteria.

S-WP-PD Storage Tank for Heat Pump Applications
When using a heat pump as the main energy source in a heating system, our Thermal Store hot water transfer technology guarantees a longer working life for the heat pump and ensures that it operates at maximum performance efficiency.
The efficiency of a heat pump is reduced the higher the temperature of hot water that is required. In addition to this, the warmer the water is that is fed into the reverse heat pump flow, the less efficient the heat pump is due to the increased amount of electricity that is required.
The Evinox Thermal store incorporates a buffer plate that divides the tank into two zones. The lower zone is used for heating purpose and operates with water up to 45°C, enabling the heat pump to work with a higher COP of 4.
The upper zone in the tank is used for domestic purposes and operates with water up to 60°C. At this higher temperature the heat pump works at a reduced COP.
The stratification system within the tank (the plate and the tubes) draws the water up from the lower zone, where the water is very efficiently heated, to the upper zone. Simultaneously this creates a zone of cold water in the lower part that is fed into the return connection of the heat pump. Both factors increase the efficiency of the heat pump therefore reducing electricity usage.
Via the zone of cold water in the lower part of the tank the heat pump can work constantly, with no stop/start, which reduces the strain significantly and increases the life of the pump.
The S-WP-PD heat pump store is supplied flitted with a blanking flange to enable the future addition of a solar heat exchanger, should it be required.

A fully heated store showing the beginning of the water drawing process (via pre-and intermediate heat exchanger)
As water is drawn out of the upper part of the store via the heat exchangers, 2 cold storage zones are created, which then enter into the return connection of the heat pump.
Hot water from the heat pump enters the lower part of the store and immediately goes to the top of the tank via the stratification tube, where it can be withdrawn for domestic hot water.

Case Study
Evacuated tube solar energy from Evinox provides the rhino enclosure at Whipsnade Zoo with hot water for the rhino showers, the rhino pool and the enclosure Air Handling Unit. The 1500 litre thermal store allows solar heat to combine with an Air Source Heat Pump to top up any energy requirements in the winter, keeping both water and ambient temperatures at optimum levels to encourage breeding.
The unique design of the high performance evacuated tube collectors ensures that the solar thermal system can make a contribution to heat demand all year round and not just in times of peak sunshine. The Evinox solar system, designed with northern European climates in mind, is well known for generating heat transfer in cold, windy or humid conditions, with minimal heat loss. At the request of the head keeper at Whipsnade Zoo,
the control system provided by Evinox ensures that the hot water for the rhino showers, the temperature of the rhino pool and the air temperature of the enclosure are at the optimum levels to encourage the rhinos to breed.
The solar controller provided by Evinox allows for integrating the heating technologies and will bring the heat pump on only when the store sensors realise that there is not enough energy being produced by the solar thermal system to meet the temperature requirements of the system.
Even during winter commissioning the exceptional performance of the evacuated tube system lifted the temperature of the store up to 60°C. The combination of the solar collectors and the thermal store allows the early morning sun’s energy to be quickly harnessed in the upper part of the store by transferring heat, via the heat transfer tube, to above the solar baffle in the lower part of the store.
When Evinox researched the best use of solar technology, they identified that the key ingredient was harnessing the energy when available and storing it in large thermal stores ready for times of demand, ensuring that solar energy is not wasted when available due to the inability to store it. The Thermal Store solution provided by Evinox, was awarded ‘Industrial/Commercial Product of the Year’ in the prestigious H&V News Awards in 2008, due to the unique way it optimises solar performance, and can generate 15% more energy when compared with other methods of storage.
Whipsnade Zoo has a project board in the viewing enclosure showing visitors how the heating and hot water system works, and publicising their own commitment to using renewable technology. This is the first of other planned projects around the Zoo that Evinox will be working on.
