The continuation of a long-standing relationship between the two companies, Spaceway has provided Stannah with a more spacious and pleasant working environment that has helped improve efficiency and staff morale. Stannah’s facility at Stephenson Close, houses the company’s UK and overseas stairlift distribution centre. With orders increasing year on year and the offices looking old and tired, the company decided it needed to expand its storage area and update and increase the size of its office accommodation. “We have a long history with Spaceway which has always provided us with excellent service”, said Chris Ward, Distribution Manager at Stannah. “When it came to finding a company to carry out the refurbishment, we immediately turned to Spaceway as the only company capable of providing us with a complete turnkey solution”. Stannah needed to create an additional 20% extra storage area as well as additional racking for picking and packing. New offices needed to be created to accommodate personnel and Stannah also needed a canteen area, meeting room and training area. Once Spaceway’s design team had created and agreed with Stannah the optimum design for the area available, the necessary materials were ordered and work began. The warehouse area was reconfigured and Spaceway installed some additional racking together with a Stannah goods lift and a Pickomat system for the storage and accessing of small and medium sized parts. A 300 sq. metre area was turned into offices, a locker room and canteen utilising Komfort Kameo 75 partitioning and suspended ceilings. A meeting room was created with dividing doors and an additional storage area and offices for stores personnel formed also using Komfort partitioning. Builder’s work was carried out to create windows and then air conditioning and ventilation was fitted throughout. To complete the refurbishment of the ground floor, Spaceway fitted floor coverings, installed a Komfort storage wall and supplied all office furniture. On the first floor, Spaceway created a training room so that Stannah could centralise all it’s training in one area and also created a stores, spares and warranty area. Once all structural work had been completed, Spaceway worked with Stannah’s nominated site contractors to oversee the installation of all electrics and IT cabling. “Spaceway’s team once again pulled out all the stops to create an environment that is aesthetically pleasing and functional”, concluded Chris Ward. “We are absolutely delighted with the finished project”. New storage sales appointment Looking to further expand its storage division, which has recently undertaken major warehouse fit outs for companies such as Carte Blanche, Stannah, Coopervision and Liz Earle, the Spaceway Group has appointed Tom Perry as Sales Executive - Storage Division. When DPR-Motorsport, a company specialising in the Caterham 7 sports car, wanted two mobile drawer cabinets in a special white finish to fit in with its team colours together with travel covers to protect them, it turned to Spaceway’s Storage and Consumables Division (SAC), which specialises in the sourcing and supply of warehouse, workshop and materials handling equipment. As a major distributor for Bott Workshop and Storage Equipment, SAC knew the company’s Rollercabs would be ideal for purpose and also asked Bott to manufacture padded covers to protect the cabinets when being transported to and from race meetings in the back of the company’s truck. “SAC provided me with excellent service and we are very happy with both the product and travel covers which are perfect for our requirements”, said David Rowe, Managing Director of DPR Motorsport. The covers were needed to accommodate paperwork and needed to be mobile so that the company could take them to and from meetings where the famous Caterham 7 sport car is raced. DPR Motorsport provides season servicing, trackside support, driver coaching and car building for this specialist-racing car, which has 700 competitors in 11 countries. 5 1 Spaceway fits the bill for expanding Respironics Respironics impressive new distribution centre in Tangmere, Chichester not only provides the company with additional space for its expanding product range but also includes functional office accommodation for its warehouse and despatch personnel. Spaceway fits out hi-tech distribution centre for CooperVisionWhen it came to choosing a company with the technical ability, project management skills and design capabilities to turn a shell into a hi-tech central distribution centre as part of its new European HQ, CooperVision, the world’s third largest contact lens maker, turned to the Spaceway Group. Now Spaceway has completed the fit-out of the centre, which encompasses 11,000 square metres of warehousing and office accommodation. The world’s third largest contact lens maker and number one manufacturer of soft toric lenses, CooperVision’s recent acquisition of Ocular Sciences together with year on year growth necessitated the company expanding into new premises in Segensworth near Portsmouth. Looking for a company that had the credentials to fit out the hi-tech central distribution centre, CooperVision selected several contractors to tender for the project. Impressed with Spaceway’s enthusiasm, fast response times and willingness to help with designs prior to tender, Andrew Hammond, CooperVision’s European Projects Director awarded the contract to the Spaceway Group.Comprising of high bay pallet racking, carton live racking designed to integrate with a Knapp automated conveyor system, two-tier warehouse offices complete with integral mezzanine floor and labelling for over 100,000 pallet locations, Spaceway has turned the space into a fully functional distribution centre. “Even before we went out to tender, Spaceway was willing to work with us on designs and respond quickly to our requests”, says Andrew Hammond. “Added to this Spaceway’s first rate reputation and competitive pricing ensured they were awarded the contract.”In order to accommodate both pallet storage and picking,

Spaceway suggested that the area was divided into two sections. Section one included the installation of high bay pallet racking in two areas with the layout designed to accommodate a VNA man-up forklift. In order to meet insurance requirements relating to sprinkler systems, section two was fitted out with mesh decking to accommodate the storage and picking of cartons. Anti-collapse mesh was fitted to the pallet racking in areas of concentrated pedestrian activity to prevent items falling on employees. To accommodate the fastest moving lines amounting to 3000 stock keeping units (sku’s), BITO carton live racking was designed and installed to integrate with an automated Knapp conveyor system to transport picked items to the packaging and despatch areas. Finally, Spaceway installed 100,000 labels in both areas of the warehouse to provide racking identification, bin locations and equipment. To complete the project Spaceway designed and installed the warehouse offices, which comprised of a single storey office and two, two-storey offices complete with integral mezzanine floors. The offices were constructed using the latest steel faced industrial partitioning and ceilings and finished with floor coverings, recessed modular light fittings and skirting trunking for telecoms and computer outlets. “The project was delivered on time and the quality of finish was absolutely first class.” concluded Andrew Hammond. “We are delighted with the finished job which meets all our requirements”.

With ambitious expansion plans in place, Wilsons, one of the largest private client firms outside London, needed to create more office space to accommodate partners, fee earners, juniors and administrative staff. Wilsons had already worked with Spaceway on much smaller projects at their offices, and called in the company at an early stage to start work on the designs of this large and complex project.Rob Thomas, Operations Director at Wilsons, explained: “Spaceway has worked very closely with us to develop plans and ideas and took over the project management of the fit out. This left us valuable time to organise our logistics for the move into our new offices, safe in the knowledge that the fit out was in good hands”.Spaceway developed their design proposals using the latest 3D and CAD walkthroughs and comprehensive colour and mood boards. This enabled Wilsons to fully understand Spaceway’s concepts and visualise the finished project. Once the entire scheme had been rubber-stamped by Wilsons, Spaceway set about the task of planning and co-ordinating their site activities in conjunction with Wilsons’ other specialist contractors.“Our staff are thrilled with their new environment,” continued Rob Thomas, “It has provided us with much needed additional space, improved staff morale and enhanced communications”. The first floor offices were fitted out with a combination of ‘Kameo’ double glazed office partitions, and the latest space saving, glass sliding doors.

Leading-edge law firm gets the Spaceway treatmentThe Commercial and Employment Departments of fast expanding law firm, Wilsons, are now enjoying the benefits of a stylish, airy, new environment following a fit-out of their new offices in Chipper Lane, Salisbury by Spaceway. The new offices provide Wilsons with additional office space as well as a colourful café bar, breakout area with plasma screens and client meeting rooms.

Floors were covered in ‘Milliken’ cushion-backed floor carpet tiles with a distinctive contrasting circular panel in the meeting rooms and maple wood laminate floors in the client reception area. When creating the design for the café bar and breakout area, Spaceway selected a range of practical yet colourful chairs, stools, glass tables and comfy sofas. Curved ceilings were introduced to enhance the stylish feel to the space.

“This project was an exciting challenge from start to finish” explained Dominic O’Brien, Director of Spaceway. “Our interior designer created three vibrant colour schemes for the client to choose from. Wilsons liked them so much they ended up using two of them. Although we met with some challenging situations along the way, Wilsons have ended up with a stunning fit out”.

New double-decked mezzanine soundproofs BOTT’s new officesWhen UK leading manufacturer and supplier of workshop and storage equipment solutions, Bott, consolidated its operation into a single facility in Bude, Cornwall, it needed to extend the existing office accommodation. This meant building over a busy and noisy workshop.Spaceway’s Storage & Consumable Division, SAC, has been a major partner of Bott for many years and last year spent in excess of £100,000 with the company. Aware of the company’s excellent reputation for office fit outs, Bott had no hesitation in reciprocating SAC’s longstanding support by awarding them the contract.Spaceway’s FlooriTallTM new double-decked mezzanine floor not only soundproofs the area but also provides insulation in winter. The mezzanine is built in three sections with a 50mm layer of polystyrene sandwiched between the two areas of decking. The result is a very economical use of space, which has provided Bott with an additional 154 square metre soundproofed area.Once the mezzanine had been erected, Spaceway set about creating the new offices. To kick off the project, Spaceway installed Komfort Jumbo partitioning around the mezzanine floor to create the office accommodation. Fire rated suspended ceilings were installed above and below the mezzanine to further insulate the area and to meet fire regulations. Windows were fitted into the outside wall and into the Komfort

Jumbo partitioning to provide natural light. Further Komfort partitioning was installed to create a drawing office and meeting room and oak doors were fitted to provide access to the new and existing offices. To complete the project Spaceway installed an air conditioning and ventilation system, electrics, lighting and floor coverings.“Spaceway is a truly professional company and the mezzanine is a excellent concept”, said Andy Poole, Engineering Manager at Bott. “Our employees working in the new offices above the workshop are completely oblivious of any noise from below.”“Spaceway is extremely skilled and has great technical expertise which makes them a highly respected supplier”, concluded Andy Poole. “Our employees are delighted with their new, bright and airy offices”.

New fire safety lawsNew fire safety legislation affecting all non-domestic premises came into force on 1st October. The new measures covering England and Wales is called the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order (RRFSO). The RRFSO aims to rationalise and consolidate many pieces of existing fire legislation and failure to comply may result in fines or even imprisonment for owners and managers of UK businesses.Unlike previous rulings, many self-employed people and sections of the voluntary sector will now need to comply as the new order applies to virtually all premises and covers nearly all types of buildings and even some open spaces. One of the biggest changes owners and managers will see is that fire certificates will no longer be issued. This change is due to a new onus being put on risk reduction and fire prevention. As a result, companies will need to nominate a ‘responsible person’ to manage the maintenance of facilities, equipment and fire safety devices and to make sure that risk assessments are carried out.Malcolm Jeary said: “Despite the massive changes facing fire safety legislation in England and Wales, few business managers are aware of the update, let alone what is required of them. As a result, many are unprepared for the effects this can have on their business. Spaceway is in a position to help managers fulfil specific requirements of the new fire regulations.”Some of the areas that business managers should be looking at to

meet these new regulations include signage, emergency lighting and upgrading doors, partitioning and windows. In addition companies should ensure they have adequate smoke alarms and fire escapes. It is now compulsory for a company with five or more people to keep a record of these assessments and note any significant findings. For example, if an accident occurred in the workplace, and no documentation was available of a risk assessment having been carried out, owners and managers could be at risk of prosecution.

A new music centre for Hampshire Collegiate SchoolHampshire Collegiate School’s newly completed music centre provides the school with an impressive new facility. Transformed from old infant school classrooms by Spaceway, the 2,000 square foot facility provides the school with an outstanding state-of-the-art resource.Opened in 2005 following the amalgamation of The Atherley and Embley Park Schools, Hampshire Collegiate School, part of the United Church School’s Trust is a day and boarding school catering for boys and girls aged 3 to 18 years. Located in 120 acres of grounds, the School’s main building is a Grade II listed building which was originally the family home of Florence Nightingale.Looking for an interior space solutions company that had the inspiration and technical ability to provide it with a prestigious music centre, Neil Carr, Head of Maintenance at Hampshire Collegiate School initially contacted three companies to gauge the calibre of design and products supplied. “We visited Spaceway’s showroom which was most impressive”, says Neil Carr. “Not only did Spaceway have the vision we wanted but Spaceway’s management team also had a wealth of experience and expertise which gave us great confidence”.Spaceway design team set to work to devise a facility that would provide the school with a music room that mirrored the school’s reputation as the best equipped education establishment in the area. To start the project the classrooms were stripped out and Komfort acoustic partitioning and suspended ceilings installed. Once this had been carried out, Spaceway installed lighting and electrics, doors, and a silent running ventilation system. To complete the project it fitted carpets with special acoustic foam backing to muffle noise.“Spaceway pulled out all the stops and fast tracked the project so that all works were completed whilst the school was closed for the summer holidays”, concluded Neil Carr. “We are thrilled with the finished project and found Spaceway a pleasure to work with.”
