THE MAJESTIC SAND HILL CRANES By, Larry Eichert 5/16 The Sandhill cranes are understandably the most loved and most visible birds. They stand almost 4 feet tall and their bugling or rattling calls are beautiful, but haunting. They rule the roads and tell you in no

uncertain terms when you are in their way. (Once, a pair would not let me out of my garage.) Many are non-migratory year-round breeding residents. Those that are local are slightly smaller than a different species that migrate from the Great Lakes region. Both species nest during late winter and spring on mats of vegetation about two feet in diameter and in shallow water. In 2011 & 2012, there was a nest where the two parts of Stone Harbour Loop meet that was visible from the road. After the wetland restoration project was discontinued an over growth of opportunistic and invasive species plants forced them from their nesting area. They normally mate for life and forage for seeds and roots, insects, mole crickets, acorns, turf grubs, earthworms, snakes, frogs and occasionally young birds or small mammals. Cranes are attracted by the open setting (mowed grass, on golf courses and lawns). They normally lay two eggs and when hatched the young are capable of following their parents away from the nest 24 hours after hatching. The young weigh about twelve pounds, males are larger than females, but their external markings are identical. In the more mature birds the male has a grayer brown coloring than the brown of the female. Cranes live to be older than most birds, some reaching 20 years old.

People inadvertently put them in harm’s way when they attract these birds to their yards with feed. Some "feeding" is accidental such as when bird seed is spilled from feeders by other animals onto the ground below making a nice feeding station for cranes. But, some people deliberately feed Sandhill cranes. Feeding such bread, corn and other processed foods gives them rickets and glaucoma especially the young. We have had to catch them and have them removed from the wild. Most of them die. They do not need handouts from humans. In 2002, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission made it illegal to feed sandhill cranes.

(Florida Fish and Wildlife Code 68A-4.00(3)). Cranes fed by humans can become aggressive toward people. In several instances, children have been attacked by cranes. Cranes fed by humans also have been known to damage window screens and do other property damage. Sandhill cranes are cherished members of the Florida ecosystem and the Stoneybrook community. They need to feel safe and comfortable in their environment in order to survive and flourish. If they feel threatened they will leave and find a more conducive environment in which to live. It would be a shame to lose them. Parts are a paraphrase from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. All photos were taken inside Stoneybrook over the past ten years by Larry Eichert
