End-of-Life Educational Seminars

The Stonehill Ethics Committee, which includes Stonehill staff, volunteers, and experts in healthcare ethics will be holding a free educational seminar: “We Are Companions on Life’s Journey: Navigating End-of-Life Decisions” on Tuesday, February 25th at 1:30 p.m. and Thursday, February 27th at 6:30 p.m. in the Stonehill Education Center (enter the first driveway off Windsor Ave.). This program is open to anyone in the community and pre-registration is not required.

Members of the Ethics Committee will present on and lead discussion about end-of-life treatment options, legal requirements, and potential end-of-life decisions for individuals and their loved ones. There will also be a presentation on estate planning considerations by Attorney Josh Weidemann, of O’Connor & Thomas law firm.

All family, friends, and anyone who would like to be more informed and prepared for end-of-life decision-making are encouraged to attend. See event flyer on page 7.

2nd Floor Renovation

Renovation of the Southeast wing of 2nd Floor is underway, with demolition of the existing area currently in progress. The renovation will match the new resident rooms, nursing station, and private dining room now seen on 2 North. We look forward to its completion this fall! Thank you for your patience during the construction.

Many thanks to all who have contributed to the Year End Appeal and the Embracing Community: The Story Continues Capital Campaign! Both of these are helping to provide support for the expansion of Assisi Village. The project is off to a wonderful start and we are so excited to add assisted living memory care apartments to the full continuum of services that Stonehill has to offer. To date we have raised over $64,000 through the Year End Appeal and over $2,160,000 for the capital campaign. Our goal for the capital campaign is $3,000,000 and there is still time to join us on this journey! We are already into 2020 with exciting changes at Stonehill. Mr. Weatherman has been generous so far, with good weather for all of us who need to travel and then park at Stonehill. Thanks to all who attended the Hawaiian party! Our Valentine party will treat us to strawberry swirl ice cream and cookies and great entertainment by Ron Lubbers.

We are getting excited to do more planning for the spring Victorian Afternoon Tea and hope you have reserved the date of May 14th for this very special event. More info will be coming soon. Also mark your calendar for our Annual Mother’s Day Flower and Bake Sale, on Friday, May 8.

We have a request for anyone disposing of an estate. Please keep in mind the gift shop for the little Santa figurines and other holiday decor as we have a market for inexpensive gifts our visitors and residents like to “re-gift”. Everlasting Love

Valentine’s Day is the one day of the year that millions of people choose to express their love for someone special in their life. I received an e-mail valentine from a beloved friend of some twenty years. She shared with me a Valentine’s Day story entitled, “Sand & Stone”:

Two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey, they had an argument. One friend slapped the other in the face. The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything wrote in the sand: “Today my best friend slapped me in the face.”

They kept on walking, until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a swim. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mud and started drowning. But the friend saved her.

After she recovered from the near drowning, she wrote on a stone: “Today my best friend saved my life!” The friend who had both slapped and saved his best friend asked her, “After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand, and now, you write on a stone. Why?”

The friend replied, “When someone hurts us, we need to write it down in the sand, wherewinds and rains of forgiveness can easily erase it away. But when someone does something that helps us, we must engrave and carve it in stone where no winds or rains can ever erase it.”

The point or moral of this Valentine’s Day story was obvious to me. Learn to write our hurts in the sand and to carve our helps in stone.

More personally, the “Sand & Stone” story meant that the relationship I shared with my friend of some 20 years is sustained because we have done just that. We allowed the hurt between each other to be forgiven, even forgotten. We let them go. We allowed the times and moments we helped one another to be remembered and celebrated again and again. We hung on to them. Thus, we became each other’s everlasting beloved valentine.

Valentine’s Day is certainly not about celebrating our love for things. It is a day we celebrate our love for persons whom we regard as “special,” “friend,”

or “family.” Certainly, Valentine’s Day can celebrate the love we receive and have for our God, in the person of Jesus, our beloved Savior. His love for us was carved on the wood of a cross. God’s love is everlasting. Valentine’s Day is about relationships of love and friendship. It’s about everlasting love.

Sending valentines means we do not value the things we have in our life, but value “who” we have in our life. Sending valentines means we have not forgotten those we love. We have learned to write our hurts in the sand and carve our helps in stone. Thus, we can joyfully celebrate everlasting love.
