From Stone Oak Manager, Meg Lorente

Conservation Efforts and More...The beautiful green islands of Stone Oak are part of what sets our community apart from other residential areas.

In this time of water conservation, your Property Owner’s Association takes water usage very seriously. Over the past year portions of the irrigation system have been refurbished to include drip line irrigation, and flow sensors were installed to help monitor the system for early detection of leaks. Due to recent rains, turf irrigation has been turned off. Bubblers are running when necessary for our newly planted trees, donated through the City of San Antonio by City Forester Michael Nentwich. Weekly tree status reports and water meter readings are closely observed to alert staff to any potential problems.

In addition, 1,200 yards of organic compost has been applied to the islands to help fertilize, improve microbial activity and protect the turf, as well as ensure the retention of water. Weed control and fire ant treatments were recently completed, and tree pruning has taken place to allow more sunlight to the turf. In May spring flowers will be planted, and our fountain at Stone Oak Parkway

and 1604 continues to run on treated water from the Dos Rios treatment facility.

Our area is also growing with construction. Three new nursing homes and Alzheimer’s facilities are being built along Stone Oak Parkway- Autumn Grove Cottage near 281, Autumn Leaves of Stone Oak just north of Canyon Golf, and El Coronado just north of Knights Cross. Baptist Hospital is expanding, and sections of our roadways are being refurbished. Our area is growing and becoming more beautiful every day, but conservation is in the forefront of our actions.

Healthy, Sustainable Living is Goal of Community SpaceFeaturing Cultivation Gardens, Hiking Trails, Special Events Center, Kitchens and More!

A community gardens project unlike anything San Antonio has ever experienced – complete with cooking, nutrition and education classes for all ages, a special events center, indoor and outdoor kitchens, and crops of fresh herbs, fruits and vegetables – is poised to become a reality.

With design contributions from some of the city’s top chefs, the goal of the Culinaria Educational Center & Gardens is to promote healthy eating and sustainability, said Suzanne Taranto, President/CEO of Culinaria, the not-for-profit organization dedicated to touting San Antonio as a premier wine and food destination.

“This is the next big thing for Culinaria,” Taranto said. “It is our legacy project.”

Culinaria has earned international acclaim for its Wine and Culinary Arts Festival – the 14th annual event is set for May

15-19, and the growing Restaurant Week festivities every August inviting the public to sample culinary creations from acclaimed chefs, local and global. These events have helped change the international community’s view of San Antonio as a top culinary destination.

Now, the organization is hoping to change San Antonio’s views of healthy eating and sustainability by setting aside some six to 10 acres of green space in one of the nation’s largest metropolitan areas to make local, fresh produce available for educational and culinary purposes.

Culinaria officials have identified a handful of sites that could become home to the Culinaria Educational Center & Gardens. The organization is also in the midst of a $2 million fundraising campaign to complete build-out after it purchases the garden grounds.

Organizers are planning to create a unique space where the community can come together to learn about gardening, nutrition and healthy living. There will be classes to teach children how to grow flowers, herbs, fruits and vegetables at home, even if they live in an apartment. “We’re going to teach children and adults about growing in urban spaces, about growing potted plants in the back yard or on a porch,” Taranto said.

“This will truly be a garden where people can come and learn the growing seasons,” she said. “They will learn how to plant, weed and harvest and learn what to do with their food once it is harvested.”

Culinaria Educational Center & Gardens Site To Be Announced Soon
