Welcome fall! I may have heard a collective sigh on August 27th as schools once again opened their doors to students. We’ll need to adjust to the traffic challenges of students being dropped off and picked up at Fern Bluff Elementary, as well as students and parents walking or biking to and from school. Of course we’ll have school buses picking up and dropping students, so make sure to look for their blinking lights and students boarding or departing.

Have you noticed the surveyors in the neighborhood, especially at the intersection of Wyoming Springs and Brightwater Blvd? The City of Round Rock is working to gather data to start the Creek Bend Blvd Extension. We’ve known for several years that the city planned to extend Creek Bend Blvd over Brushy Creek to the intersection of Brightwater Blvd and Wyoming Springs Drive to provide better north-south connections west of IH 35. The city’s website shows a start date of 2014 with a duration of 18-24 months. Once we get notice of a more specific start time, we’ll notify the community. For more information, check the City of Round Rock website at: http://www.roundrocktexas.gov/home/index.asp?page=677

I’ve had a few residents contact me with some concerns and requests that I’d like to pass along. Part of yard maintenance is the disposal of the debris caused by cutting grass and trimming. Clippings on the sidewalk can cause walkers to slip, and yard waste blown into the street can clog the drainage sewers. Please be courteous and help maintain a nice look in the community by properly disposing of debris and yard waste.

Also, please be considerate of your neighbors with respect to trees overhanging the sidewalk. Preferably, trees should hang over the sidewalk no lower than eight feet (8’). I’ve noticed a few challenging areas on walks around the community. If you have any trees with branches that need to be lifted, please take care of them so that you avoid a deed violation. In addition, plants and shrubs need to be kept off the sidewalk.

Another issue that has many residents concerned is parking in driveways that block sidewalks. I did some research and found that this is governed by state law in the Texas Transportation Code, Sec. 545.302. STOPPING, STANDING, OR PARKING PROHIBITED IN CERTAIN PLACES.

(a)An operator may not stop, stand, or park a vehicle:(2) across a sidewalkBesides being against the law, parking across the sidewalk makes

it hard for our residents that walk the neighborhood. Keeping the sidewalks clear is necessary for more reasons than just being a good neighbor. Blocking sidewalks causes major safety concerns. I was told by a resident that they were on a morning walk with the sun blocking their vision when they suddenly ran into a car blocking the sidewalk. This should not happen to anyone, but imagine if you’re a child or a person with a disability? If you are blocking the sidewalk you are forcing pedestrian traffic into the street and, of course, the possibility of having to cope with motor traffic. It’s inconvenient and it’s dangerous. Please do not block the sidewalks, even if you just need to quickly run into the house. Help keep our neighborhood safe and pleasant. The few minutes you block a sidewalk could cause unnecessary hardship for someone else. A call to the sheriff’s office confirmed that they are the agency that enforces this law. If necessary, you can reach them at 943-1300. No one wants to call the sheriff on a neighbor so please be safe and courteous by following the law.

Hopefully, we’ll enjoy cooler weather soon. The Lower Colorado River Authority is predicting more than average rainfall for the fall and early winter. If you need to replace or repair the sod in your yard

now should be a good time to do so. Check with local suppliers for more information or give the Williamson County Extension office a call at 943-3300. They partner with Texas A&M and have good information to help you with landscaping in the County.

Their website can be found at: http://wilco.org/CountyDepartments/CountyExtensionServices/tabid/1923/language/en-US/Default.aspx

Recent downpours have caused some erosion problems around the community. We’ve had dirt wash over some of the sidewalks along Brightwater. Our landscapers will be doing some modifications to address these problems. We’re also lifting canopies of trees along Brightwater to make sure we have an 8 foot clearance.

Hope to see you at National Night Out in October!Take care,Jessica Stempko, SCOA President

Let’s Keep It Clean! We all like to walk our dogs but we all hate to clean up after them.

Unfortunately it is a part of dog ownership.I know this is a time worn reminder but the neighborhood is

littered with dog droppings! Please be kind to all of your neighbors & friends by removing

your dog’s waste from their lawns, sidewalks, parks & greenbelt.Know that the waste can spread disease not only to other dogs but

to humans as well. Think about all the little kids you see playing in their bare feet!

And it just plain stinks in this hot weather.

Thank you & I hope you are all enjoying your summer!Cathy Soukup

Round Rock Citizen Police Academy

The Round Rock Police Department is now accepting applications for our 24th Citizen Police Academy (CPA) scheduled to begin on September 11, 2012. The Round Rock CPA is an 11-week program that gives community members opportunities to experience some of the first-hand realities of life as a police officer. The Citizen Police Academy class is free for anyone interested in attending. This is one of many continued efforts to develop citizen awareness and understanding of the role of law enforcement.

Support Your CommunitySaturday, September 29, 2012 - 11 am to 6 pm

at Cat Hollow ParkOur Mission: To provide an opportunity for local nonprofit

organizations and individual volunteers to raise funds that will serve our community. Over 5,000 participants will come out to enjoy the festivities and support local nonprofits.18th Annual Hairy Man Festival - Saturday, September 29th  Each year, the festival raises about $40,000 in food and cash

donations to help local children and families in need. The net proceeds from the Hairy Man Festival are donated to local food banks (Round Rock Serving Center and St. Vincent de Paul) as well as multiple local nonprofit organizations. Proceeds will also benefit CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates). The mission of CASA is to be a voice for abused or neglected children through the power of volunteer advocacy and changes in the child protection system.  CASA volunteers are appointed by judges to watch over and speak up for abused and neglected children.   For many abused children, their CASA volunteer is the one constant in their lives - and often the one adult who cares only for them. www.texascasa.org.

The family fun-centered event raises money for many local charities, and offers a full day of food, arts & crafts shopping gallery, children’s activities, and live entertainment all day. Admission to the festival is two non-perishable food items or $2 per person to go to local food banks. This event is sponsored by The Brushy Creek Women’s Association. The festival is located at Cat Hollow Park off of RM 620 at 8600 O’Connor Drive.
