I n d e e d t h e o n l y s i g n i f i c a n t d i s c o v e r y w a s t h a t , o f t h i r t y - s i xm o t h e r s who w e r e q u e s t i o n e d o n t h i s p o i n t , o n l y o n e c o u l d c l a i m t h a t h e rb a b y h a d b e e n g i v e n n e i t h e r b o t t l e n o r dummy. Some o f t h e p a t i e n t s l o o k e d h e a l t h y a n d w e l l , b u t m o s tw e r e t i r e d , p e e v i s h a n d h o l l o w e y e d . p i n c h e d f a c e a n d a l e a d e n g r e y c o l o u r ,w h i c h w a s s o c h a r a c t e r i s t i c t h a t i t a l l o w e d t h e d i a g n o s i s t o b e made a ts i g h t o n more t h a n o n e o c c a s i o n , o f t e n i m p l i e d t h a t t h e b a b y a l s o h a d g a s t r o -e n t e r i t i s . I t w a s f o u n d e s p e c i a l l y o n t h e c h e e k s ,b u t a l s o o n t h e p a l a t e o r t o n g u e , a n d was f a i r l y e a s i l y r e m o v e d w i t h a s w a b ,l e a v i n g a r a w , o r e v e n a b l e e d i n g , s u r f a c e . S e v e r e g a s t r o - e n t e r i t i s w a s p a r t i c u l a r l y i m p o r t a n ti n t h i s r e s p e c t ; i t was p r e s e n t i n t w e n t y - f o u r c a s e s a n d p r o v e d f a t a l i n n i n eo f t h e s e . P r o b a b l y a t e n t h c h i l d a l s o d i e d , s i n c e h e was i n e x t r e m i s w h e n l a s ts e e n , b u t h a d t o b e t r a n s f e r r e d t o a n o t h e r i n s t i t u t i o n , a n d s o c o u l d n o t b ef o l l o w e d . I n two o r t h r e e c a s e s m y c e l i u m w a s a l s o f o u n di n t h e s t o o l s , a n d i n o t h e r s t h r u s h o e s o p h a g i t i s was d e m o n s t r a t e d a t a u t o p s y .S i x c h i l d r e n h a d a n a p k i n r a s h , b u t o n l y one o f t h e s e h a d g a s t r o - e n t e r i t i s ;s e v e n c a s e s w e r e c o m p l i c a t e d b y o t i t i s m e d i a . _B a c t e r i o l o g y . B a c t e r i o l o g i c a l e x a m i n a t i o n was u n d e r t a k e n when t h ec h i l d r e n f i r s t a t t e n d e d t h e d e p a r t m e n t . An o r d i n a r y c o t t o n c o v e r e d t h r o a ts w a b was r u b b e d f i r m l y o v e r t h e a f f e c t e d a r e a a n d was d e s p a t c h e d i m m e d i a t e l yt o t h e l a b o r a t o r y , w h e r e a f t e r a d i r e c t smear h a d b e e n m a d e on a c l e a n g l a s ss l i d e , a p l a t e o f S a b o u r a u d s medium was i n o c u l a t e d . I t was f o u n d i n p r a c t i c et h a t t h e s i g n i f i c a n t o r g a n i s m s w e r e u s u a l l y r e v e a l e d i n t h e s m e a r . F a i l u r e t od e m o n s t r a t e e x p e c t e d o r g a n i s m s , f o r e x a m p l e f r o m c a s e s o f t h r u s h w h i c h w e r eq u i t e t y p i c a l c l i n i c a l l y , may h a v e b e e n d u e t o t h e p r a c t i c e o f t a k i n g o n l y as i n g l e s w a b i n e a c h i n s t a n c e .S i x t y c h i l d r e n w e r e e x a m i n e d b a c t e r i o l o g i c a l l y , a n d o f t h e s e f o r t y - o n es h o w e d t h e s p o r e s o r m y c e l i u m o f t h r u s h .
