Stockton Cricket Club.A brief history.

The first mention of an established cricket club in Stockton was in 1816 but cricket hadbeen played in the area in 1814.In 1847 the all England X1 played the first of severalgames up to 1860 against Stockton & District 22`s. A lithograph of one of these teamscan be found in the clubhouse today. Many visiting teams came to Stockton from places like Bradford, Harewood, LacellsHall, Bedale, Kelso and Edinburgh.

In 1888 a new Durham County Cup competition started and Stockton lost in the finalthat year but went on to win the trophy in 1890. In 1891 the club joined the new leagueset up in Durham. Also in 1891 the club found out that the ground they were using wasto become a park for the town. This is sill in use today as “The Ropner Park”. It meantthat the club had to find a new ground and the present field of Grangefield was bought,it needed to be drained leveled and a boundary fence was built. All of this for a cost of£1537.2s.8d.The first ever game on the ground was against Constable Burton a village side fromNorth Yorkshire on 4th June 1892. (This game was restaged a century later in a weekof celebrations to celebrate the clubs 175 anniversary).

In 1896 the club joined the North Yorkshire & South Durham league and over theyears have made the ground into the best in the league, a purpose built tea room wasadded in 1923 after the ground had been enlarged two years earlier, a grounds man’shouse was added in 1953 and the best score box in the league in 1955.

The clubhouse was extended in the 1960`s by adding a new lounge & this wasrepeated in the early 1980`s when the larger function room was built, linking theexisting clubhouse with the tea pavilion. The club has a thriving social club togetherwith a ladies croquet section, indoor bowls etc. Also connected to the club are theStockton men’s & ladies Hockey Club.

From 1947 to 1991 Durham CCC played minor county games on the ground, in 1992we were one of the 6 out grounds chosen by DCCC to host First Class games. For thisa lot of work was done on the ground which included a new state of the art electronicscore board & indoor cricket net. The changing rooms were redesigned & enlarged toaccommodate the county players. This development has certainly improved theexcellent facilities already on the ground. The club has also bought some allotmentland adjacent to the field & have turned it into an outdoor net area.

The club decided to join the new North East Premier Cricket League in 2000 and apartfrom the junior X1 we have left the NYSD cricket league. The club currently runs 3 teams on a weekend; one during the week, under 17, 15, 13,& 11 together with newly formed ladies team for 2000.
