THE KEY TO A REWARDING RELATIONSHIPPASSION...

We make no bones about it – property is our passion. And we recognise the same passion in the needs and desires of our clients. More often than not, they know exactly what they want from a property advisor, and we make sure they get it.

Whether selling, letting or buying, we’d love to help. Call us on Winchester 01962 932435

As usual you will find a monthly recipe, all the useful local information and many interesting

news articles.

Please keep your letters and emails coming as we are always delighted to read your feedback. Speak to us and let us have your thoughts, be it on the magazine itself or the content of an article. The Forum is for the community and the community needs a voice, so our letters page will give you the freedom to speak.

The Forum team are constantly working hard to provide a good quality, informative and interesting magazine for our readers. We aim to include as many local events and news items as possible – so if you have a bric-a-brac sale, fete, class or exhibition etc. that you would like advertised for free in our magazine, please contact us at the earliest opportunity and we will include it in our News and Events section.

Don't forget if you would like to read the magazines online simply visit our website www.stockbridgeforum.co.uk and click on 'Latest Issue' in the menu bar . If you saw something in a previous issue and need to find it then click on 'Old Issues' tab in the menu bar.

We are always thinking of ways to improve your local magazine and we are keen to expand our readership yet further.

We need your information urgently and we value your local input. Entries onto our Dairy page, Clubs and Societies page and Useful Information page are completely free of charge.

A desperate effort in the last week had the plane ready for us to show it off at the Village Tea Party on August Bank Holiday Monday. The following day a 'first flight' was scheduled. Well it flies- but rather too well . It took off like a rocket and finished up in a tree all in 5 seconds! Flight Number 2 didn't last too long either as it flew through a hedge.Repairs are in- hand as I write.

The problem, I think, is that we are in urgent need of a competent pilot!P.J.H.

Throughout August, a team from Crawley's Youth Club met for three mornings a

week and built a Radio Controlled Plane. Starting from drawings and a pile of balsa wood the team of 14 members built a 5 foot wingspan electrically powered machine. No-one had any previous experience and several of the team are aged less than ten years old.

In fact, the covering team are all aged 8 or less and covering is tricky since it involves ironing a plastic film onto the wooden frame and then using the iron to shrink the covering drum tight.

No-one had to be dragged off to A & E, no-one stuck there fingers together (well, almost no-one!) and none of the covering team fried their fingers.

The Jane Austen Singers will be holding an advent carol service at St.Mary's Longstock. You

may remember reading last year of the ‘unplanned resurrection’ of the Jane Austen Singers (formed in 1975), who, after six years in the wilderness, reformed thanks to being asked to sing an Advent Service of Carols in St Mary’s, Longstock in 2006. Their continued success in Longstock has

resulted in the choir being invited to perform two concerts in Spain in November of this year. Tim Lowden is very grateful to Longstock for this huge accolade and has promised to bring the singers to Longstock again this year to sing for us at our very popular Advent Carol Service. The Jane Austen Singers were a regular deputy choir for Winchester Cathedral, singing services in the

Cathedral when their choir was on holiday and so it should be no surprise to us that their standard of choral singing is high.

Please put Sunday 27th November, Advent Sunday, in your diary, 6pm, and come and support this musical treat which, thanks to a grand supper in the village hall after the service, raises in excess of £800 for local

institutions. such as the Church and the Village Hall. Bring friends who live outside of Longstock to help us spread the word of this very special Longstock event which is capable of raising significantly more funds for our community thanks entirely to the Jane Austen Singers.

The original, largest and still the best network of performing arts schools in the world.

Nurturing and developing young peoples potential through dance, drama and singing.

Many of you will have been aware of the building works which have been on our site for the last year or so. They are almost complete! The Water Meadows Children’s Centre was built last spring and is now open for families to visit as well as creating vital outreach support for young children in our local communities.

The pre-school onsite has had a radical facelift and is now a vibrant and exciting space which children are exploring with a newly developed keenness. The school hasn’t been left out! We now have an amazing outdoor space for our youngest children who frequently share it with the pre-school as well as an outdoor, grassed amphitheatre.

The final stage of the project takes place as I write – the seeding of the field and amphitheatre will help us to have a space which really enhances our children’s experiences at school.

Enjoy all Autumn has to offer.

Emma JefferiesHeadteacherStockbridge Primary School

Autumn begins in a whirl at Stockbridge Primary School!

What a start to the term! Here at Stockbridge, the winds of autumn have brought change to the school, not least with a new Headteacher and 2 new members of teaching staff! We are not alone however; 14 new children joined our School as Reception and we welcomed a family who moved back to the area from a posting in Belize (they didn’t bring the hot weather though!).

Think how many things you access on a daily basis which require you to read – signposts, newspapers, forms to complete, memos and emails and perhaps a book at bedtime to name but a few.

We are committed to getting all of our children to become fluent readers who have a real love of books and information gathering and over the holidays, a team of parents, staff and governors helped to create a library in the school. The children have loved having a special space to call their own and classes have already been using it frequently to support learning in class and indulge in time to investigate other books they might not have chosen for themselves.

Make a bechamel sauce; gently melt the butter in a pan, then add the flour and mix well. Add the cold milk very gradually, stirring all the time until it comes to the boil. Add grated

nutmeg, salt and pepper. Remove from the heat. Puree the scallops in a liquidizer or blender. Add the pureed scallops and mix well, make sure the béchamel stays fairly firm.

Add 4/5 egg yolks and mix well. Beat the egg whites until very stiff and fold in to the béchamel. With a spatula, cover the slice of salmon with a thick layer of the soufflé mixture. Butter a dish, pour a little white wine into it and lay the salmon on it. Bake at 200ºC for 25/30 minutes, or until cooked.

Meanwhile, sauté some spinach to accompany the salmon. Make a pouring source by reducing some fish stock and white wine, then add the cream and let it reduce a little further. If the cream boils – no problem. If necessary add a tiny amount of arrowroot to thicken, just a little at a time. If you want to colour the sauce you may add a soupçon of tomato paste or juice from the puréed spinach. Whisk well and check the seasoning. When ready, pour the sauce over the salmon and serve immediately.

P A R K I N Gof the solution lies in their hands, they should take the lead in trying to improve the situation; it is, after all, in their best interests.

The Traders’ Association have adopted a proposal made by the study group and have undertaken to:

A) Reduce the number of cars they park on the High Street, eventually to one per establishment, which will be parked outside their own premises.B) Display a notice in their shop window encouraging responsible parking and a 3 hour limit. (This will discourage the 'cycle tourists' who park for days at a time and for those who use the high street as free alternative to the local station car parks).

The Test Valley Borough Council and the Parish Council have also undertaken to help resolve the problem further in the longer term and will consider:

A) Limited parking at each end of the High Street, to be policed on an informal and irregular basis. Residents and traders will be exempt from the time restriction. B) A one-way system around the congested Trafalgar Way / New Street circle.C) White lining some parking spaces on the High Street.D) The establishment of a permanent Car Park on the edge of town for traders and visitors alike.

Whenever you plan an excursion - be it shopping, the school run, to get a train, going to the cinema or, heaven help us, to the airport - it’s parking that is the major concern.

We don’t even ask ourselves ‘will we get parked?’ any more, safe in the knowledge that unless we leave at the crack of dawn, or add an unreasonable amount of time on to our journey, we won’t. Sharp intakes of breath are followed by the sage-like pronouncements of those in the know: “You’re leaving when? Well, you’ll never get parked.”

But we’re sensible, realising that if journeying beyond a ten mile radius (sometimes less) of Alresford, we will encounter major traffic and parking problems, so expeditions are tailored accordingly i.e. if it’s a bank holiday we don’t go at all, unless divorce is seriously being contemplated.

That’s the reality of the parking phenomenon, it irritates us beyond all measure but we accept it…until it comes to our own home town.

Now it is unrealistic to think that the government would wake up to the fact we are an island fast running out of space and that there are probably enough cars here to keep us all going for ever without importing any more. Of course there is immense revenue to be made from cars; the purchasing of new vehicles partly being sustained by our image-driven society. You are, apparently, what you drive: “I drive a BMW, therefore I am.” I drive an aged Renault therefore....I’m not.

IS ANXIETY CONCERNING PARKING TAKING OVER OUR L IVES I WONDER?

Understanding then, that there are ‘too many cars on the road’, why are we so surprised that we often can’t get parked in Alresford? How many times do we ‘pop into town’ to find ourselves driving up and down Broad Street and West Street in search of that elusive space whilst muttering about the injustice of it all. We could of course park at the Perins or Station car parks, but we haven’t time, besides why should we pay, we’ve lived here for years: parking for free is our right! How many of us have thought that? How many of us, in frustration, have parked on double yellows as we’re ‘only going to be a minute’. Give us an inch and we’ll take a mile: I confess to parking in East Street recently taking full advantage of the missing yellow lines, and have seriously contemplated double parking for the sake of a ‘Carocoli muffin to take out’.

Irrespective, in Alresford we are lucky to enjoy, proportionally, a large amount of gratis and permit-free parking, and in the centre of town many are lucky enough to have garages or are able to rent.

Theories abound regarding who is responsible for the alleged unavailability of parking; builders working in town, shop owners, people staying overnight or lingering over coffee? Perhaps though we should be grateful that parking is at a premium? OK, so it’s mildly inconvenient sometimes, but people flock here not only because they love the shops but because of the free parking in the centre of town, just as they do in Stockbridge, I imagine. ’Pay as you go’ or metered parking in Broad Street and West Street may well deter people from coming at all.

Whilst we have many shops catering for the luxury end of the market, we also have plenty that deal in necessities; you can buy virtually all you need here. Times are very hard for any business at present: in short, Alresford needs all the punters it can get if businesses are to survive.

Alresford is like any other place - to be assured of easy parking, arrive early. If not, be prepared to be patient and a parking space will be yours! And lets face it, Alresford is lovely to walk to if we’re able.

I’ll be doing that later....well, I couldn’t get parked this morning!

The subject of parking in Stockbridge High Street has been contentious for many years. It has been the subject of heated debate within the Traders’ Committee for about 15 years but no easy solution

has been found. In the last few years, the parking problem has become so intense that customers now complain frequently to traders, with some stating that they are reluctant to come shopping in the town anymore, especially on Saturdays. The residents have, similarly, been seriously inconvenienced by the number of cars parked outside their houses.

It is estimated that the traders occupy about 100 spaces all and every working day and it is also estimated that parking spaces are used six times everyday by customers of the town. It is clear that if the traders’ cars were removed from the High Street then an immediate and significant improvement would result.

The Traders’ Association has undertaken a comprehensive study of the problem and has accepted that, as at least part

Joan continued, “We hope that people will continue to support the Red & White Appeal and help us reach our target as soon as possible.”

There is currently no dedicated facility for blood cancer patients who need day case treatments such as chemotherapy, blood transfusions, platelet transfusions and stem cell collections at Southampton General Hospital. The current treatment area is located at the opposite end of the hospital to the blood cancer inpatient service and is often overcrowded. Southampton strives to provide continuity of care so that patients come to

the city and region to make the Appeal a reality. Southampton Hospital Charity’s Red & White Appeal is celebrating a huge milestone, raising over £1million towards a new day treatment unit for blood cancer patients. Thanks to tremendous support from individual donors, groups, communities and local businesses £1,013,597.30 has now been raised for the project which aims to create a specialist day unit for patients with leukaemia and other blood disorders from across Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Wiltshire, Dorset, West Sussex and the Channel Islands.

Joan Newman, Bone Marrow Transplant Clinical Nurse Specialist said, “Thank you very much to everyone who has supported this Appeal. It is brilliant to be such a big step

The Red & White Appeal aims to raise £2.2million to create a specially designed, purpose built unit for these patients. The state of the art unit will be built next to the inpatient facilities and the integrated service will vastly improve the patient experience, creating a calming and more comfortable environment for these vital treatments.

Veryan Grant, Director of Southampton Hospital Charity said, “We are absolutely delighted to have reached the £1million milestone in our Appeal for blood cancer patients. It’s been a real team effort from the whole of the city and I would like to thank everyone for their support.

Veryan continued, “However we can’t start building the new unit until the whole amount has

been raised. It is vital that we now work together to reach our goal and we need the continued support of people across the region. It would be great for patients to make this a reality in 2012.”

There are a wide range of fundraising events, challenges and activities on offer for supporters to get involved with the Appeal. Why not become a Christmas Star and raise £100 in the lead up to Christmas? Whether it’s a cake sale, raffle, sponsored event or a quiz night, Southampton Hospital Charity’s fundraising team will be happy to provide advice and support.

We all heard that there were going to be cuts to our

local bus services, but the only announcements local residents received was the publication of the new bus timetables on September 4th. So, we all had to figure out for ourselves how this would affect us.

Students in Broughton discovered a week before the beginning of term, that in order to go to college in Andover or Winchester their normal bus

service has been cancelled and now have to make their own way to Stockbridge to get a bus service. And what if their parents don’t have a car, or have a car but need it to get to work themselves in an entirely opposite direction? The education authority provides transport for children going to secondary school but this ceases when they leave in year eleven. To continue their education they have no alternative but to go to a further education college, at their expense. So to be notified one week before term begins that many of the bus services have been withdrawn/ amended is quite scandalous.

Stockbridge also finds itself without a direct service to Salisbury; now you have to take a bus to Middle Wallop

to connect, and hope the connection exists. And if you live in Chilbolton and want to get to Salisbury, the route is even more convoluted. Yes we know that Salisbury is in Wiltshire but for many years HCC and WCC seem to have been able to resolve this issue and provide such a service. Now it’s gone and that’s that.

The people who rely on the bus services are those without their own transport; many have bus passes but find that their ability to travel is now severely curtailed. Over the years, the bus services have been eroded bit by bit; however, the more it’s eroded, the less people use it and then the excuse can be made to reduce the subsidy and before we know it, cut services altogether. We’re exhorted to

ditch the car and use the buses but when they no long serve the purpose of the community what will happen to future generations of students and the elderly? Andrew Gibson, the County Councillor for the Test Valley Central area is undertaking a review of the service changes. Please contact him with your views and experiences at [email protected]

At the time of going to press, there is a meeting of the Test Valley Passenger Transport Forum to discuss this on 27th September at the Crosfield Hall in Romsey at 2pm. We will report back in the next issue of any outcomes.

Kings Somborne Parish Church is holding an Angel Festival which

has brought out the creativity of the locals. Angels have been appearing everywhere, in windows, in the church and in front gardens! One Angel made by local Artist Ann Noble stands about 6ft tall and has a wing span of just under 6ft.

In June, at the village fete, Ann Noble found out the parish church was planning an angel festival for

the village, holding a competition for people to enter their angels into different categories with prizes to be awarded at the end of the festival. Ann, being a creative type, was inspired and an image formed in her head. Ann used a variety of materials, including one of her husband's shirts to create the inner frame of the body. After the festival the Angel will need a home and anybody wishing to offer one are welcome to get in contact.

fourth baronet Col. Sir Edmund Antrobus (1848-1915), decided to sell the estate. ‘Lot 15: Stonehenge with 30 acres of adjoining downland’, was sold at auction at the Palace Theatre, Salisbury on September 21st 1915. Local man Sir Cecil Chubb bought it 'on a whim', for the price of £6,600. He felt that a "Salisbury man ought to buy it" and, it is rumoured, went home to his wife whose birthday it was, and told her he’d bought her ‘a ring of stones’. She, apparently, was none too pleased. Woolley and Wallis acted on behalf of the buyer. In 1918, Chubb formally handed over Stonehenge to the nation.

The necklace goes to auction with an estimate of £15,000-20,000.

A Salisbury auctioneer that acted for the last private buyer of

Stonehenge, Sir Cecil Chubb, almost 100 years ago, is now selling another ring of stones; a diamond necklace, on behalf of the family that sold Stonehenge to Mr Chubb.

The late Victorian diamond necklace is being sold at Woolley and Wallis Salisbury Saleroom on Thursday 27th October, on behalf of a direct descendent of Col. Sir Edmund Antrobus (1848-1915), fourth Baronet, whose name appears on the original Garrard box.

From 1824 the Antrobus family of Antrobus Hall, Cheshire owned the Amesbury Estate which included Stonehenge. In 1914, after his son and heir was killed in action at Ypres, the

nervous afflictions in women, and for prevention of nightmares. Today’s herbal publications specifically recommend chamomile for gastrointestinal disturbance with associated nervous irritability in children. The Ethnomedica results placed chamomile as the ninth most popular remedy, taken to improve sleep.

In ‘The tale of Timmy Tiptoes’, Potter includes a clear illustration of Chippy wrapped in a blanket with his feet in a mustard bath. This treatment dates back to at least the 1500s and the writings of an Italian scientist, Sanctorius. The theory was that people with colds pass fluid through their nose rather than sweating and so should take hot drinks, use mustard baths or even undertake cold bathing to promote perspiration. Potter’s books also supply an insight into the interactions that her characters have with medical professionals. ‘The tale of Benjamin Bunny’, depicts Peter’s mother as a herbal practitioner, selling herbs, rosemary tea and rabbit-tobacco (lavender). As early as the 16th century, John Gerard in his ‘Great Herbal’ wrote of wild lettuce that “it procures sleep”. Today, wild lettuce is said to possess mild sedative, anodyne and hypnotic properties, and its traditional use continues for insomnia, restlessness and excitability, pertussis, irritable cough and muscular pain.

It is also worth noting that wild lettuce is an ingredient currently in Kalms Sleep, Nytol Herbal and a range of other herbal products. Some things never change.

Beatrix Potter is much-loved as a children’s author and illustrator. Her books, set in

their rural context of the early 20th century provide valuable insights into contemporary perceptions of illness, disease, views of the medical profession and particularly countryside remedies.

In ‘The tale of Jeremy Fisher’, it was commonly believed that if a person got his or her feet wet all the time he or she would catch a cold.

Another area of interest in the books are common rural practices for treating illnesses. Having gorged himself on lettuces, French beans and radishes, Peter looks for parsley to treat his nausea. He becomes unwell so his mother gives him chamomile tea: “One tablespoon to be taken at bedtime.” Today we recognise parsley has carminative and antispasmodic properties and it’s traditionally used for flatulent dyspepsia and colic, among other things.

Potter’s illustrations also show medicinal plants, Jemima Puddleduck is depicted among digitalis and in ‘The tale of Squirrel Nutkin’, Nutkin and friends use dock leaves as a convenient wrapper for the beetles that they present to the old brown owl to allow them to gather nuts on his island. It is interesting to note that the current Ethnomedica project led by Kew Gardens, consistently has dock leaves as the most frequently mentioned plant remedy.

Writing in 1931, Maud Grieve (‘A modern herbal’) suggested chamomile tea for hysterical and

City and Guilds Qualified

very reasonable prices, and courteous friendly service from people you can trust in your homeHere's why one of the Test Valley's most trusted carpet cleaning companies is cleaning local, neighbours carpets for a fraction of the normal cost.

Dear Stockbridge Forum Reader. Value conscious local residents

love a great deal. If you need your carpets cleaned

and are looking for an award-winning company who will arrive on time, will be courteous, respectful and above all trustworthy - then you're invited to take advantage one of the three extraordinary value, high quality, carpet and upholstery cleaning deals we're offering new customers -- because we want to give you the chance to get to know our service and to find out how impressively new, fresh and bright your carpets will look when cleaned and freshened by The Carpet Care People.

UpholsteryWe specialise in cleaning and refreshing three piece suites (at our current offer price of £97). Fabric Master, our special upholstery and cleaning system is safe, gentle and very effective. Fibres are restored to their original beauty and softness - you'll see!

CurtainsOur new curtain cleaning service is carried out in your home, right where they hang. It's a fuss-free way to have your curtains cleaned and refreshed and is often the 'finishing touch' to spring cleaning a room!

Our approach is simple:We are proud to run a celebrated professional carpet and upholstery cleaning business, and we insist on providing you with good old-fashioned service and value.

Call now and find out why our award-winning service is probably the most requested carpet cleaning in the local area. The next thing for you to do is call us on 01962 690 005 - we'll welcome your call, answer your questions and take care of everything for you.

Tel: 01962 690 005FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Here's a selection of frequently asked questions, especially for you sceptics (you know who you are). 1. When you say 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ft ish. But we don't quibble if the area is a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount prices is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen TVs. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden extra costs' The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay.
