All Saints Pcc has pleasure in announcing the first of what it is hoped will become an annual series of lectures to raise funds for the church. In 2011, the church plans to install Photovoltaic's in the roof of the Meadow Room, to reduce our carbon footprint and as a way of generating a long term guaranteed income stream under the Government Renewables Feed In Tariff.

The political and military background to British interventions in the Middle East, military and political intervention in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan has resulted in huge military expenditures and significant loss of life - both civilian and combatants. These wars have been variously justified as "dealing with failing states" or "mitigating modern threats such as 9/11 or 7/7".

The first lecture will be on:7th February 2011 "Post 9/11 - uK Political Strategy in Iraq, Afghanistan and Pakistan". Sir Hilary Synnott KcMG. Sir Hilary, a resident of Goodworth clatford, is a career diplomat with postings in Paris, Amman and India, before being appointed High commissioner to Pakistan from 2000 to 2003, coinciding with 9/11. His final posting was as coalition Provincial coordinator (cPA) in Southern Iraq in the immediate aftermath of the second invasion and the removal of Ambassador Ole Wolhors Olsen, the Dane who complained of a lack of reconstruction efforts. Sir Hilary has published a book

about his time in Basra called 'Bad Days In Basra"

The second lecture will be on:14th February 2011 "The First Gulf War - what it achieved and what it led to" Major General Patrick cordingley DSO DSc FRGS. Major Patrick is best known for commanding the 7th Armoured Brigade - the Desert Rats - during the first Gulf War. Having had a highly successful military career spanning four decades, he retired in 2000 and has become an authorative commentator on international affairs, has appeared on various television programmes and is a regular on BBc Radio 4. In 1996 he was appointed Military Advisor to His Majesty Sultan Qaboos of Oman. He has written two best selling books, "The Eye of the Storm" and "captain Oates".

Venue, Time and Tickets These lectures will take place in King Edward VII Memorial Hall, upper clatford, Andover SP11 7QL starting at 8.00 pm. Tickets are 10.00 for each lecture which includes a glass of wine. Speakers will sign copies of their books if available with any profit to the cause.

Tickets can be bought at Anna Valley Store or Goodworth clatford Village Store, or requested by writing to charles crosthwaite Eyre at The Old Malthouse, upper clatford, Andover, SP11 7QL or e-mail on [email protected]. cheques should be made payable to All Saints Pcc.

In an ever changing world where we are becoming more and more aware of the responsibility we all have towards the well being of our planet, renewable energy is at the forefront of our battle to reduce carbon emissions.

A childs point of view of life at Kings Somborne cE Primary SchoolLearning at Kings Somborne has been a fantastic experience so far in my final year here. The year kicked off with a trip to Oxenwood to celebrate our Saxon project. It was raining! First we took part in an interactive role play in which we were Saxons sailing across The Whale Road.

When we got there we were met by Vortegan, who was wearing shining armour and a magnificent Roman style helmet. After the role play we went inside to learn more about the Saxon weapons and how they were made. Then we were given the opportunity to make

our own shields, saxes and Francesca, a Saxon sword. To end the day (and this was the best part) we took part in a mock battle between the Romans and the invading Saxons. We gave Mr. Osmond, our class teacher, a proper Saxon burial at the end of the fearsome slow motion battle.

Key Stage 1 performed their christmas Play last week, the play was called Baboushka and it was a magnificent achievement. All the children got their cues correct and they spoke clearly and confidently. Libby Witherington was brilliant in the lead role.

We are given plenty of opportunity to have a say into how the school is run. I myself am a member of the School council and recently we purchased some new playtime equipment as voted for by all the children in the school. Kings Somborne has been great so far and it can only get better. Stone Farm is just around the corner and I will find it difficult to leave because it has played such a big role in my life.

Here's a selection of frequently asked questions especially for you sceptics (you know who you are) 1. When you say 'room' or 'carpet' what do you mean? We mean average size areas, say 10x12ish. But we don't quibble if the areas are a little larger - it's all done on fairness really. 2. Do you move furniture? Our pricing policy reflects the time it takes us to clean working around furniture, rather than moving it. That said, we are for example, happy to move your three piece suite backwards and forwards cleaning under it and replacing it back into position. What we don't price into the job at these discount rates is moving large pieces of furniture like bookcases, sideboards or wardrobes. Similarly we are not insured to move electrical items, in particular flat-screen tv's. Again we apply common sense and fairness to the situation and inevitably we do end up moving some furniture around, even at these discount prices. 3. Are there any 'hidden' extra costs? The prices quoted above are fully-inclusive and are the actual prices you will pay (VAT is included).

Limited stock and some real beauties on oerBargains galorefrom5 to60

claudia Bradby will be holding an annual sample sale at Stockbridge Town Hall on Thursday 13th January

With prices from 5-60, her annual sample sale is set to be a stampede. Featuring REAL freshwater pearls, sterling silver, semi-precious stones and original designs it is a chance not to be missed. Historically people have travelled from far and wide to bag a bargain. Prices are one-offs and everything must go. usually sold across the uK in many stores from John Lewis to small designer stores this is a unique

    Claudia Bradby Jewellery for Living

chance to accessorise yourself austerely. And to stock up your present drawers; be ahead of the game for Valentines day and Mothers day.

Why not come for a walk on beautiful Stockbridge common (just behind the Garden Inn), or meet a friend at the sale for coffee and cake. With many good pubs nearby it is the perfect excuse for a day out to lovely Stockbridge with some friends or family.

DESIGNclaudia Bradby Jewellery is a local business based near Stockbridge for 8 years. Her designs are worn by a wide spectrum of women, children and some of her gorgeous women, including Kate Middleton, Jilly cooper and Katie Derham.

She strongly believes you should build your jewellery wardrobe as thoughtfully and passionately as you build your clothes and shoe wardrobe. From school runs to business meetings, to everyday pick-me-ups, to special occasion wear, she

    thinks she has it covered.

claudias design mantra is to create beautiful, wearable pieces of jewellery.

Her aim is to produce jewellery for living, with designs that are modern and contemporary, without compromising on style and form. She uses real stuff freshwater pearls, sterling silver, real gemstones. She loves sculptural, elegant shapes and claudia is a fanatic for detail! Each piece is beautifully finished, whether by a pearl on the end of an adjustable chain or a small silver bead making a full stop under a bead or pearl. All designs are fully copyrighted.

THE JEWELLERYEach piece of her jewellery is handmade, with stones sourced from around the world and freshwater pearls from china. All the silver she uses is 925 sterling, unless otherwise noted, and many of the silver beads are handmade in Bali and Thailand. Because these are natural handmade items, each piece will vary slightly.

All the designs are unique to claudia Bradby, so you are buying into an exclusive brand, and items are often in very limited editions. Each piece comes in one of her

    exclusive felt pouches.

WEARING THE JEWELLERYAs claudia designs each piece, she pays particular attention to how it will be worn. She loves modular designs, which give the wearer some flexibility; a necklace becomes a bracelet when doubled around; necklaces can be stacked together. But most of all, each piece is designed to give its wearer a lift, to be something you really love and cant wait to wear; something you can build an outfit around.

MOST OF ALLShe says: please enjoy wearing, and giving, claudias designs. And, since all her collections are renowned for their affordability, she hopes you will, like many of her customers, build up a collection of pieces as one would a wardrobe.

    Le Pot au feu

Clos du MarquisFrench Restaurant at the Leckford Hutt

    T: 01264 810 738

    E:[email protected]

    W: www.closdumarquis.co.uk

Recipe supplied and sponsored by Germain

Marquis of clos du Marquis Restaurant

This is a most earthy dish to be eaten by a bunch of friends. The only problem is the size of the cooking pot. Our grandmother used large pots which have unfortunately disappeared! But you can use two pots if necessary. Its a very traditional French dish enjoyed by everybody, especially with friends.

Method:In a large pot fry all the meat until it is a nice golden brown. Once the meat is browned cover with cold water, ensure that the water is level with the meat, bring to the boil then simmer.

Whilst the water is coming to boil peel and cut the vegetables. Take some slices of carrot and put them at each end of the marrow bones and attach with a piece of string, this stops the marrow coming out of the bones!

After 20 minutes of cooking, remove the foam from the surface of the simmering water with a soup ladle. Return

to the cooker and slowly cook for another 20 minutes. Remove any remaining foam and add salt and pepper to taste, add the onions and all the other vegetables except the tomatoes.

Let the ingredients cook for another 40 minutes removing any foam from the surface of the liquid.

Remove the vegetables and poultry as they are cooked. But leave the other meats to carry on cooking for another 60 minutes. check and remove the other pieces of meat when ready. The meat should be so well cooked that it begins to fall off the bone. Now add the marrow bones and tomatoes and cook for an additional 20 minutes. Once the marrow bones are cooked remove the slices of carrots from the end. Warm up vegetables and meat briefly in the bouillon and serve carefully arranged on a large serving dish.

For a luxurious version of this recipe add a scallop of duck foie gras per guest, briefly

poached in the bouillon, absolutely superb! Serve into soup plates with slices of toasted country bread beside.

Each guest may add a drop of red wine in the bouillon toward the end of the meal, its called faire chabrot or chabrol in the South West of France. The next day it will be even better or you can keep it in the freezer. The bouillon will make the most delicious consomm. using a hand mincer, mince all the left over vegetables and meat together, fill an oven dish with it, cover with a good mashed potato to make a Hachi Parmentier!, freeze and use later on.

If you use a lamb knuckle for your pot au feu then make sure it is placed in the middle of the dish, the bone sticking out prominently. It is then called La soupe a la jambe de bois or the Wooden leg soup! a speciality from Lyon and Mr Paul Bocuse. An ancient version of this recipe uses a whole turkey and a leg of lamb, plus a piece of silverside without forgetting someprime rib of beef!

ingredientsYou don't have to use all the different meat described, butit is essential that you use chuck steak and marrow bone.

500gChucksteak 500gLambneckcutinto slices or lamb knuckle or both if you prefer Halfasmallchicken, partridge or pheasant 500gofoxtail Marrowbones, each cut to 5 x 5cm. The census - some facts and figures. 2011 is going to be another census year. censuses,

[or should it be censi] have been held every ten years since 1801, except in 1941 for obvious reasons, but a population

count was carried out on 29th September 1939... perhaps for one of the same reasons as the very first census [see below].

They were first suggested by John Rickman in an editorial he wrote for the commercial, Agricultural and Manufacturers Magazine in 1800, called On Ascertaining the Population. His initiative brought him to the attention of Mr. charles Abbot M.P., who in 1802 became the Speaker of the House of commons. He decided to employ John Rickman as his private secretary. Rickman drafted the census Act that was passed in 1800 and supervised the census of 1801 and the next three.Rickmans motivation had several strands; firstly he could see the need for an intimate knowledge of population as the only rational basis for legislation. Secondly he realised the need for an assessment of the conscription numbers for the militia and

the number of seamen for the Royal Navy...[dont forget the Napoleonic Wars started in 1803]. Thirdly, he thought the census would provide a basis for planning to feed the nation.

The 1801 census was held in March, but the next three were held in late May or June. 1851 saw a return to March and dates since then have always been either late March or April. The 2011 census will be held on 27th March. censuses have sometimes proved controversial as more information is sort

about us all. The 1911 census for example was boycotted by the Womens Freedom League [the suffragettes], and it is estimated that in 1991 over one million people avoided the census for fear of it being used to identify them for Poll Tax purposes. By the way, the 1931 census results were destroyed in an accidental fire, so future genealogists will find there is quite a gap in the records between 1921 and 1951! An extra census was held for a random 10% of the population in 1966 and new questions asked about car ownership and the means people used to travel to work. This year there will be the option to complete the census online. Happy form filling and a Happy New Year.

    Bryan Beggs.

it is frosty or snowy. Birds become bolder, venturing into gardens in search of scattered scraps and well-stocked feeders and bird tables.

Fallen apples can still be a good food source, which you can supplement with sliced fruit from the kitchen. You may be lucky enough to see more unusual visitors, such as fieldfares and redwings looking for berries and fruit in cold winter weather.

The simplest way to encourage birds into your garden is with a bird feeder. Generally, there are three types of bird feeder, to match the three common types of bird food: seeds, peanuts, and suet or fat balls. Also at this time of the year another essential thing to do is make sure that there is a unfrozen water source in your garden.

Seed feeders are generally tube-shaped with small openings at their base where birds can perch and pick out the seeds. It is important to note that if you plan to offer niger seed, you need a feeder that is specifically designed for it as niger is too fine to work in a regular seed feeder.

Peanut feeders have coarse mesh or perforated sides just large enough to allow peanut fragments to pass through, and most suet feeders have larger openings still, resembling small hanging cages. choose your feeder carefully, the larger the holes and the reward, the larger the bird causing smaller birds to be left out. Try the good old fashioned upside down coconut shell filled with fat and seeds.

    Winter Wildlife

Find a safe spotchoosing where to put your bird feeders can be a challenge. The ideal spot for a bird feeder is quiet, but not too out of the way. Remember that youre going to have to trek out there to refill the feeder. Having natural cover, such as trees or bushes, nearby is a plus, since it gives birds somewhere to hide. However, try to avoid putting the feeder directly under a tree, since trees also make good launching points for pouncing squirrels or cats.

Squirrel raids are of course an ongoing problem for many bird feeders. While some people do not mind squirrels, they do scare off birds and have voracious appetites

that can make your bird food disappear in a flash. There are a variety of squirrel-proofing devices available for safeguarding your feeder, such as cages with openings too small for squirrels to fit through or deflectors that prevent the squirrels from jumping on top of the feeder. If you anticipate a squirrel problem, do not get a cheap plastic feeder as they will simply rip it apart. Sturdier polycarbonate or metal feeders are a much safer investment.

You should also watch out for windows. The feeder should not be less than three feet from a window, or birds may end up colliding with the glass. A well-made crook should allow you to place the feeder wherever you like in your garden.

Keep it cleanBe sure to clean your feeder and the surrounding area on a regular basis, preferably every two weeks. Remove uneaten

food and seed husks and wash off any stains, droppings, stray feathers and dirt. Doing so will help prevent the growth of mould and diseases such as salmonella. To avoid the possibility of cross-contamination, do not wash a feeder in the same area you prepare food.

A feeder is an excellent help to birds, especially during the colder months, and is a great addition to the garden for your own enjoyment of watching them feed.

However, a bird feeder cannot take the place of a birds natural diet. You can best help birds find their own food by maintaining your garden well.

You may also want to consider adding plants that birds naturally feed from, such as thistles, rowan, or alder.

Like most people I have an annual New Years resolution, its just that mine does not involve dieting or exercise; although it probably should. No, my resolution is simply snowdrops. I love they way they welcome in the change of season in their small and hopeful manner, looking so delicate and yet tough as old boots. Every year I remind myself that I really must get some, every year Mother reminds me to buy them in the green, and every year I never quite seem to get around to it. It is such an annual event that Mother actually took pity on me a couple of years ago and dug up some of hers for me; needless to say they are still in their black plastic pot and

not in the flower bed yet. January is of course the month for planning the garden year; the fact that our lawn needs an overhaul, that I still havent pruned things I should have (but at least they look pretty in the frost), that bits of fencing need mending, that the vegetable patch needs doing properly this year, that Tom, Dick and Harry need better support, that the decking needs a good clean and seal, that I really must keep up with all of the weeds, that the garden toys will need a good hosing down, oh and that the crocosmia need moving away from the path. The list keeps growing and growing Ill start small and see if I can finally get those snowdrops in!

Add a little compost and a thick layer of mulch to protect the tender new growth. This is an excellent use for the branches of your discarded christmas tree.In the event of snow, be sure to shake or brush off the white stuff from the branches of your evergreens and shrubs. The light fluffy snow poses no real threat, but if it should become wet and frozen, the weight dramatically increases.
