the Media

Sunday, Nov 6

from 3:30-5 PM

All high school youth are welcome to attend our

second spirituality meeting on Catholics in the

Media. We will be discussing how Catholics are

portrayed in the media, some famous Catholics in

media, and how these both play into our own

personal faith journeys.

, we will have a new president elected and Barack

Obama will enter the last months of his presidency. As we approach

the elec!on, we are called to discern what kind of country we want

and how we can promote the common good. An Igna!an Examen

for Civic Life will help you pay a"en!on to God’s movement in

your life and invites you to converse with God about the rela!onship

between the Gospel and civic life. Please find copies at the

entrances to the Church and at our Year of Mercy Board found at

Decisions, Decisions

And an Invitation

by Fr. Joe Wagner, SJ

There are "mes in all of our lives when we

make some pre$y significant choices,

some major decisions, and we may find

ourselves wondering, even worrying, if we

are making the “right” one. St. Igna"us

Loyola had a lot to say about the ways we

can go about making such decisions, and

in some cases he encouraged us to ask

God for confirma"on of the choice we made. In the Spiritual

Exercises, he suggested that such confirma"on might take the form

of “courage and strength, consola"ons, tears, inspira"ons, and

peace.”

Last year, I came to a decision to leave my academic life because of

a constant, nagging ache that I felt to do more pastoral ministry. It

was this decision that eventually led me to St. Mary Student Parish.

Du"ful Jesuit that I (some"mes) am, I asked God for confirma"on of

that decision, and over the past months, I’ve felt as though God has

been bea"ng me over the head with it. Such confirma"on comes

not from a loud, booming voice, but through simple yet profound

moments. An unexpected conversa"on with a student, a chance

mee"ng on the street, or, most recently, a gathering around the

Blessed Sacrament on a Wednesday evening—all of these have le!

me with that sense of “courage and strength, consola"ons, tears,

inspira"ons, and peace” that I think Igna"us must have had in mind.

Some 28 years ago, I asked God’s confirma"on of another big

decision. I made the choice to pursue the life of a Jesuit, and I

professed my first vows of poverty, chas"ty, and obedience in the

Society of Jesus two years later. We call them first vows because St.

Igna"us, in all his wisdom, understood that decisions like these need

confirma"on, also—not only for me, but for my Jesuit brothers as

well. And he le! it up to my brothers (represented by our Superior

General in Rome) to decide along with me if and when God’s

confirma"on has been granted. Earlier this year, I learned that our

Superior General has called me to profess my final vows—in a sense,

publicly recognizing that both my Jesuit brothers and I have come to

believe that the choice I made has been the right one for all of us.

This coming Wednesday, November 9th, at a 7:00pm mass at St.

Mary’s, I will profess my final vows as a Jesuit, trus"ng that the

countless moments of confirma"on over the past 28 years have led

me to this final moment. I happily invite and welcome any of you—

you who have contributed so much to the confirma"on I now feel—

to celebrate this moment with me. Whether or not you are able to

a$end, I ask you to pray that God may con"nue to grant me what I

pray he grants us all: a deep knowledge and confirma"on of God’s

enduring and faithful love in our lives.

Mondays at 6:30 pm Centering Prayer is a silent prac"ce of prayer that rests on the faith

that Christ is present within by his Holy Spirit. It is an excellent

prepara"on for contempla"ve prayer, which is a grace or gi!

bestowed by God. Centering Prayer is an inten"onal openness to, or

prac"ce of "wai"ng" on God, encouraging the building of a more

in"mate rela"onship with Jesus and the movement of the Holy

Spirit. It is rooted in centuries-old monas"c prayer. The book, Open

Mind, Open Heart by Father Thomas Kea"ng, OCSO, is a good

introduc"on. The first Monday of each month we listen to an

introduc"on to centering prayer and then pray for 20 minutes.

Otherwise, we typically sit and pray for two 20-minute sessions with

a short medita"ve walk in between. All are welcome.

33RD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reading I Malachi 3:19-20

Psalm Psalms 98:5-9

Reading II 2 Thes. 3:7-12

Gospel Luke 21:5-19

Jesus teaches that his disciples will be persecuted as a nec-

essary prelude to the parousia. Through their persever-

ance, they will emerge victorious when the Lord comes

again. As we await the Day, let us conscien"ously fulfill our

Chris"an obliga"ons.

SUNDAY READINGS

NOVEMBER 6

32ND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Reading I 2 Maccabees 7: 1-2, 9-14

Psalm Psalms 17:1, 5-6, 8, 15

Reading II 2 Thes. 2:16— 3:5

Gospel Luke 20:27-38

In response to an a$empt to ridicule his teaching about life

a!er death, Jesus again proclaims a resurrec"on of the dead,

that life is indeed stronger than death itself. This is our

eternal consola"on and hope. Then will our joy be truly

complete.
