Dear Parents

The end of term is fast approaching with lots going on as always Our annual Autumn Concert was a wonderful showcase of the musical talents of our students with a wide range of performances many of a stunningly high standard We were delighted that one of the groups performing the Jazz Band were once again invited to open the festivities at the Marlborough Christmas lights switch-on Another event taking place in Marlborough at the Town Hall is the Y10 drama production Santarsquos Workshop which promises to be a very festive and entertaining show Our final celebration of the year is our Christmas Carol Concert at 7pm on Tuesday 19 December in St Maryrsquos church all welcome Christmas is a time of giving and thinking of others and our students are always very keen to raise funds and support local and national charities This year following on the success of last year we are once again inviting students to contribute items for the Devizes Food Bank as part of a lsquoreversersquo advent calendar The Sixth Form are raising money for Save The Children with their Christmas Jumpers day and brave (or foolhardy) staff are volunteering to participate in our annual Bush Tucker event where a large audience of excited students willingly donate considerable sums for charity to see their lsquofavouritersquo teacher eat a variety of tasty bugs such as tarantulas and scorpions Whilst all this fun is going on our hard-working Y11 students are very much focused on their mock examinations which are currently underway We were extremely pleased to see so many parents at last monthrsquos GCSE revision evening and the feedback from the event was that it had really helped you to support your children in the lead-up to these important exams It is also a busy time for our Y13 students who are completing their university applications supported by their tutors and teachers as well as by parents at home May I take this opportunity to wish you all a very merry Christmas and happy New Year and I look forward to welcoming our students back to school on Thursday 4 January 2018 Yours faithfully

Christmas Carol Concert at St Maryrsquos Church Tuesday 19 December 7pm

Congratulations to Grace Powell who has been awarded a Distinction in her Grade 4 Musical Theatre in Production exam by Trinity College London It was for her performance in a musical comedy called the Lazy Ace which took place at the Shaftesbury Theatre in the West End London It was a fantastic production and all those students involved gave outstanding performances

Several of Michele Lomasrsquos brass students entered the Devizes Eisteddfod and the results were as follows- Benedict Edmondson won the Harry Ridout Trophy as overall winner of the brass solo classes Sammy Till Vattier and Joseph Marletta achieved Distinction Adam McArthur and Alexa Edmondson achieved Merit

Charlie Galley delighted the audience at the Zoots Halloween extravaganza in the Town Hall Charlie took to the stage to give a blistering cover version of Mr Brightside by The Killers The audience were also entertained by dancers from MAD featuring Cicely Herrod-Taylor Amy Hill Jess Lamb Emily Giles Martha Duncan-Zaleski Josh Fellows Jasmine Jackson Eleanor Mundy Jess Light and Nancy Whitehouse

On Tuesday 17 October St Johnrsquos Marlborough held its annual SJM X Factor The auditions took place the week before and the acts ranged from fast and upbeat rapping to singing the slowest of songs The people who sang them ranged from Year 7 all the way to Year 10

The dress rehearsal was a mere two days after the audition After school had finished everyone got into their outfits for the night and prepared to sing for an audience By the time the actual night had begun everyone was both excited and nervous The first act took to the stage and immediately the crowd cheered in excitement the enthusiasm never left the audience throughout the entire night After everyone had performed the audience submitted their votes However before the results were revealed St Johnrsquos had a very special staff routine (Abba) Once Abba had stepped down and finished their routine the votes had officially been counted and it was time to an-nounce the winner We all know only one act could be the true winner and in the end Paige Hayden-Tubbs received the highest number of votes After the winner had been announced she gave another performance this time with all her fellow acts standing singing and dancing behind her The fantastic prize for winning the singing context was an hour long limo ride for Paige and seven of her lucky friends Paige and all her friends got ready for the ride ldquoThe limo was amazing and what topped it all off was being able to experience it with my best friendsrdquo said Paige And just like that it was all over again Well at least until next year

Thank you to all the parents and friends that supported our Christmas production performed by our Year 10 BTEC Performing Arts (Dance and Drama) students We took our audiences on a journey to Santarsquos Workshop on Tuesday 12 and Wednesday 13 December It was also wonderful to take the show on tour to Marlboroughs Town Hall We were

entertained by elves fairies and even a robot It was a festive fun event to end the term Well done to all the students cast and crew of Santas Workshop Half of all profits from the production will be donated to the charity ldquoHannahrsquos Treesrdquo a charity set up in the memory of Hannah Owen who sadly passed away aged just 13 on the 9 December 2009 from a brain tumour recurrence Hannahrsquos favourite time of year was Christmas and the charity celebrates her life by sharing the magic of Christmas with children and young adults who have a life limiting or terminal illness

Autumn Concert

On Thursday 23 November over 150 students

performed in the Autumn Concert in the Theatre

The school Orchestra performed exciting extracts

from Beethovenrsquos 5th Symphony and Pirates of the

Caribbean and St Johnrsquos Jazz had the audience

tapping their feet with jazz standards including

Glenn Millerrsquos lsquoIn The Moodrsquo

There were fantastic solo performances from students

across all year groups in a variety of styles from piano and

singing to trombone trumpet and sax

Congratulations to Sofia Joseph

who has recently taken part in KD Gymnastics championship in Newbury for their annual championship Sofia and won 2nd and 3rd place in two disciplines (Floor and Beam) Sofia hopes to inspire others and send the message that lsquohard work always pays offrsquo

A group of Year 8 students and their parents had an enjoyable and challenging

evening creating a structure out of KrsquoNex to enable them to lift a cup of water up

by at least 75cm

Comments at the end of the event included

Best 90 minutes of my life

Great fun and a good evening

Amazing activity

I found it fun creating and thinking about the tower design

Great fun

Very good We really enjoyed it Thanks

Drama Trip to New York by Mrs Matyla

The Drama and Music department took 22 St Johns students on a wonderful sight-seeing trip to New York during October half term We were greeted by a fantastic tour guide (Lawrence) and he took us on a personal tour hitting all the major highlights of Manhattan We ended this exhilarating day by going to see the Broadway show SCHOOL OF ROCK The next day students went ice skating at the Rockefeller Centre We were able to webcam parents from Times Square in the afternoon and end the evening with a visit to the top of the Empire State Building

On our final day we went to the Natural History Museum and finished with a shopping spree on 5th Avenue The trip was a wonderful experience and will hopefully be a new tradition here at St Johns for years to come

Fishing for Schools Some of our Year 9 students have taken up the opportunity of a six

week course run by Fishing For Schools This short angling course

has been purpose built to offer skills and confidence to young people

and is just one of the programmes we have on offer to our students

who would benefit in this way

The Drama and Music department took 22 St Johns students on a wonderful sight-seeing trip to New York during October half term We were greeted by a fantastic tour guide (Lawrence) and he took us on a personal tour hitting all the major highlights of Manhattan We ended this exhilarating day by going to see the Broadway show SCHOOL OF ROCK The next day students went ice skating at the Rockefeller Centre We were able to webcam parents from Times Square in the afternoon and end the evening with a visit to the top of the Empire State Building

On our final day we went to the Natural History Museum and finished with a shopping spree on 5th Avenue The trip was a wonderful experience and will hopefully be a new tradition here at St Johns for years to come

week course run by Fishing For Schools This short angling course

has been purpose built to offer skills and confidence to young people

For anti-bullying week the Year 12 Drama students devised and performed a hard hitting anti-bullying play Based on real experiences the play was an honest and moving depiction of the emotional impact of being bullied The play was performed to year groups at the school The play inspired a great deal of

constructive discussion amongst the audience all of which reinforces St Johns no-tolerance policy when it comes to bulling

National Equestrian Championship Success by Katharine Towle

On Friday 20 October twelve girls represented St Johns at Addington Manor for the National Championships To even get to Addington Manor in Buckinghamshire was a great achievement with over 1200 competitors over three days The girls and ponies were beautifully turned out every day despite the mud The team rode very competitively keep their cool and had lots of fun riding in thirteen classes over three days St Johns consistently finished in the top 30 with forty schools competing from England Ireland Scotland and Wales in every class Georgia King stood out as an outstanding competitor and won two classes overall in the main arena in a nail biting final She was crowned National Champion with her pony Drop the Subject in her Jumping With Style and Show Jumping Classes

The one year graduate School Direct scheme run by the Excalibur Teaching School Alliance (TSA) is off to a flying start In collaboration with Bath Spa University and Bristol University Excalibur TSA is committed to developing and delivering cutting-edge primary and secondary school-led initial teacher training (ITT) With two training hubs St Johnrsquos in Marlborough and Fairfield High School in Bristol the Excalibur TSA course offers a Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) with Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) as well as the possibility of gaining 60 credits towards a Masters This yearrsquos cohort comprises one primary school and six secondary trainees who range in age from early twenties to early fifties They have all had other jobs first Investment banking architecture chef hospital administrator physiotherapy are just some of the careers previously followed Several trainees had always wanted to teach but life events got in the way or as James Allen (a science teacher trainee) commented ldquoI simply wasnrsquot brave enoughrdquo Sarah Frame Director of Excalibur TSA believes that the course offers excellent support ldquoTrainees are treated as a member of staff from day one We run an induction in June so the trainees can get to know each other Trainees have two support
