If your child has lost something, please have them check the lost and found in each house office and the cafeteria. Each year, we donate hundreds of coats, sweatshirts and more to charity be-cause we cannot return them to their rightful owners. Sincerely, Rodney Moore Principal Stone Hill Middle School

Dear Stone Hill Families, As we begin a new year, I would like to take the time to thank all the Stone Hill families for making our first half such a success. We ended Decem-ber with so many wonderful concerts displaying our talented students. This semester we will continue to fo-cus on student achievement as we gear up for the SOLs in the spring. We have a new face in House A. I would like to welcome Mrs. Jennifer Brooks as our 8th grade Dean. She comes to us from River Bend Middle School, and we are so happy to have her here with us. I am sure she will make a wonderful addition to our Stone Hill family. With the inclement weather season upon us, please make sure you dis-cuss with your child what to do if bad weather occurs, and they come home to an empty house. It is very important to stick with a prear-ranged plan. Also, remember that if we have a two-hour delayed opening, students cannot be dropped off ear-lier than 10:10 a.m.

If due to a disability, you need assistance to enable you to participate meaningfully in any conference, meeting or school event, please contact our main office at 703-957-4420 at least 5 working days prior to the event. Thank you. Please call the Department for Personnel Services at 571-252-1000 if you need as-sistance in locating sign language or interpreters.

2008-2009 Grading Periods Interim Dates

Jan. 22, 2009 - 2nd Grading Period Ends March 4 & 5, 2009 Apr. 3, 2009 - 3rd Grading Period Ends May 19 & 20, 2009 June 19, 2009 - 4th Grading Period Ends

Counselors Corner We hope you had a wonderful, restful and fun-filled winter break! We are in the final stretch of quarter 2 and the first semester of the school year! As grading time approaches, please be sure to encourage your child to check with their teachers about any missing assignments they may have. Most teachers are willing to accept assignments up until the end of the quarter, but

students need to communicate with them about their plan to turn in work. Semester exams for 8th graders and those students taking high school credit courses can be a stressful time. Parents, it is important for you to talk to your child about their exam schedule so you can be sure to help them prepare, get a restful night’s sleep and eat a good breakfast on exam day. Eighth grade exams count 1/7 of each student’s final grade and high school credit exams count 1/5 of their grade-so it is a significant portion and should be taken seriously. Please talk to your child’s teachers if you have specific questions about exams. Exams begin January 16th. 6th Grade News Following Winter Break, Mrs. Stuntz will be going in to the 6th Grade Resource classes and presenting the students with a lesson titled "Skills to Help You Succeed in Middle School.” Dur-ing this lesson, the students will learn time management skills, study skills, and test taking skills. These are all skills that can benefit them not only here at the middle school level, but also in high school, college and once they begin to work.

7th Grade News

Seventh graders have been rolling right along with their achievements and success! So far this school year has proven to be a great one and our 7th graders are exhibiting excellence not only in studies but in respect for one another. The guidance department surveyed all students about their Career Day experience and we are using that information to plan future Career Days according to the students wishes. Mrs. Harper is planning follow up Career Exploration lessons for the 7th grade students in the coming months. Believe it or not, course selection time for next year will begin in a couple of months. Be on the lookout for more information.

8th Grade News

We have 26 eighth graders who took the Thomas Jefferson admissions test on December 6th. They are awaiting word about who will move on to the final round of the application process. We wish them all the best of luck!

Students were able to obtain Academy of Science applications up until Winter Break. They were instructed to get teacher recommendation forms to their teachers before winter break. Completed applications are due to Mrs. Carpenter no later than January 9th!!!

National Geographic Bee For the 21st year, the National Geographic Society is holding the National Geographic Bee for students in the fourth through eighth grades in thousands of schools across the United States and in the five U.S. territories, as well as in Department of Defense Depend-ents Schools around the world. All students at Stone Hill have participated in the prelimi-

nary round of competition during their Social Studies classes. The second and final rounds of the school-level competition took place on December 15th. The winner of the Stone Hill Middle School bee will ad-vance to the next level of competition in early January, a written examination to determine state competi-tors. All school winners are eligible to win the national championship and its first prize, a $25,000 college scholarship, at the national competition May 19 and 20, 2009 in Washington, D.C.

Loudoun County Spelling Bee Stone Hill will have grade-level spelling bees in January. The sixth grade spelling bee is Jan. 12, the seventh grade spelling bee is Jan. 14, and the eighth grade spelling bee is Jan.15. The Loudoun County Spelling Bee will be held at Stone Bridge High School in the auditorium on March 5 at 7:00 p.m.

Thank You!

The talent show held here at Stone Hill on Friday, December 5 was a big success! Over 250 faculty, staff, parents, and students all gathered to enjoy the talents of our diverse student population. Their talents ranged from singing Billy Joel to Beyonce, Disney to the Jonas Brothers, playing the piano to dancing to Bollywood music. The audience was enthusiastic and supported each and every performer, even joining in at times with clapping or singing.

We collected $714.00 and 386 pounds of food and donated all of it to Loudoun Interfaith Relief. The or-ganization was truly touched that we donated all the proceeds from the event. Many faculty, staff and stu-dents helped to put on the show but I'd like to specifically thank one student, Chad Davidson, for his many hours spent after school preparing the sound and lighting for the show. Thanks again to everyone that came out to support Stone Hill's students and their many wonderful talents.

P.E. News and All That’s “Fit” to Print

Greetings from PE! For the past two weeks Mr. Bennett’s classes have been in FLE. Mrs. Patterson and Mr. Thompson’s classes have been in health covering lessons on safety. Miss Gallo and Mr. Walker’s classes have also been in health covering physical activity and fitness. The 8th grade PE classes had the opportunity to have a special speaker from Velocity Sports Performance. Valerie Coleman came to their health classes to speak to them about proper training and conditioning, proper weight lifting techniques, and nutrition. Before 8th grade went to health, they finished a unit on basketball. The 6th and 7th grade classes finished their basketball unit after health. The week before winter break, all PE classes had a dance unit, learning dances such as the Cha-Cha Slide, The Cupid Shuffle, The Mississippi Mudslide (Cha-Cha Slide), The Electric Slide, etc. It’s been a busy month and we can’t believe it’s already winter break! With that said, we are looking for-ward to a relaxing winter break with family and friends and hope you all will do the same. Have wonderful break and remember to relax!

IMPORTANT Student Drop-Off/Pick-Up Information

School begins at 8:35 a.m. Students may begin arriving at 8:10 a.m. We cannot assure supervision of students who arrive earlier than 8:10 a.m. Students who wish to

eat breakfast will proceed directly to the cafeteria to eat their food BEFORE going to their lockers. For the safety of our students, the bus loop in front of the school is restricted to school buses. The drop-off/pick-up car loop on the side of the building should be used for cars dropping off (8:10 - 8:35 a.m.) and picking up students. Please do not have the students walk across traffic to get to your car. Wait in line and pick them up in the car loop. Please be sure to pull as far up as you can so that the greatest number of cars can drop-off or pick-up stu-dents in a timely manner. After dropping-off or picking-up DO NOT pass other cars in the loop. It may take a minute to drop-off or pick-up some of our students but passing other cars can only lead to a possible accident. NO CARS ARE ALLOWED IN THE BUS LOOP DURING ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL.

In the afternoon most of our activities end at 4:23 p.m. There will not be anyone here to supervise your child after 4:30 p.m. If your child is staying for an after school activity, please make sure you are here to pick them up by this time. Thank you for your cooperation.

FROM THE FRONT OFFICE: Early Dismissals When taking your child out of school early, please write an early dismissal note and have them bring it to their house secretary in the morning. The sec-retary will give them an early dismissal pass for your child to leave class at the appropriate time to meet you in the main office.

Absences or Late Arrivals When your child is absent from school, please call the absentee line at 703-957-4422 to report their absence. Absences that are not called in are considered unexcused. Please be sure to spell the last name and give the child’s grade when calling in on the absentee line. Daily Announcements Daily announcements are posted on the website under “Quick Links” and then “Daily Announce-ments.” This is very beneficial to check since students may not always hear and/or remember impor-tant information. Bus Information For all bus issues, please contact transportation at 703-771-6540. If Your Child Will Be Riding A Different Bus Home Please send in a note with your child giving them permission to ride a different bus home. Please be sure to include the bus # or name of student they plan to ride home with.

These stations are notified by direct calls and should be the primary stations that are monitored.

When conditions require school closings or early dismissal of students, announcements will be given to the following radio and TV stations:

ONE HOUR DELAYED OPENING means that ALL SCHOOLS start one hour later than scheduled and op-erate as usual. Afternoon programs will be held at the regular time. TWO HOUR DELAYED OPENING means that school opening is delayed for two hours with specific changes to certain programs.

Book Fair We had great success hosting the Scholastic Book Fair in December. A huge thank you to all of our wonderful parent volunteers who took time out of their busy schedules to come in and help us out. We would not have had such a great success if it hadn’t been for their generosity.

Stingray Book Club The Book Club has been meeting regularly once a month during each lunch shift. The stu-dents attending have had a great time eating their lunch, sharing their books with others, and enjoying dessert provided by Mrs. Klix and Mrs. McCulloch—no complaints about our baking skills yet. Our next meeting will be on Wednesday, January 21; the topic will be His-torical Fiction.

BAND 7 & 8 Congratulations on a job well done both at your American Education Week concert and at the 8th Grade Honor Roll Assembly. On your behalf, I have been the recipient of many kind, generous, and insightful compliments. Your are well on your way to se-curing your superior rating this year. I hope the winter months bring the snow you de-sire as well as the opportunity we all need to prepare for Band Festival on March 7th. BAND 6 Your first performance as a band is quickly arriving. You should have already purchased the concert dress in advance of the January 15 performance date: white shirt, black pants (for boys and girls alike), black socks, and black shoes. Thank you for attending the after-school rehearsals so far. Take time every day to play the pieces for your review and for your parents. Remember that although the concert begins at 7pm, you should plan to be on stage at 6:30pm in order to warm-up, tune, and re-view performance procedures. JAZZ BAND Thank you to all 19 members of our first jazz ensemble up here on The Hill. Our first performance at Briar Woods HS was a resounding success. I look forward to all that you will accomplish as a group come this spring. As the years roll on for this group and with it all the proud accomplishments and awards, you will be able to look back proudly and know that you were the ones that brought it all into existence.

2009 School Calendar

January 20, 2009 has been changed

to a workday for teachers and a holiday for students.

January 23, 2009 is a regular school day

for students and teachers.

This is the workday that was previously identified as "moveable." It is now fixed for January 20 rather than being moveable. This was done so that students may participate in or observe the inauguration of the 44th President of the United States. The board also decided that all future presidential inaugurations will be incorporated into the calendar as a holiday.

Friday, January 23rd, is now a school day for students and teachers and an exam day for middle and high school students.
