4 — Home Show 2016 Star Beacon, Tuesday, March 1, 2016
ASHTABULA TOWN-
SHIP — After the cold
dark days of winter,
Weather-Sealco’s
display of windows
and sunrooms aim to
remind Home Show
visitors of spring and
warm sunshine.
Weather-Sealco, also
known as WSA Inc.,
has participated in
the Ashtabula County
Home Show for more
than 30 years. And, the
third-generation, fam-
ily-owned business is
celebrating 75 years in
business in Ashtabula
County.
“This year we will
be displaying Seaway
windows including a
bay window, Seaway
sunrooms, iberglass entry doors, motorized
retractable awnings and
vinyl siding,” said Jack
Hogan, head of sales at
WSA Inc.
The energy tax credit
is back for 2016 and
qualifying windows and
doors are eligible for up
to $500 in tax credits,
he said.
In addition, 2016 En-
ergy Star requirements
for the Northern Zone
(Ohio) have changed.
“Customers should
be aware of these
changes to make sure
they are installing a
window that performs
in our area and qualify
for the tax credits,” he
said. “Seaway Signature
Windows — our window
manufacturer located
in Erie, Pa. — exceeds
these new ratings. We
have dealt with Seaway
since 1959 and they are
family owned and oper-
ated just like us.”
Incorporated in 1983,
WSA Inc., is one of the
area’s largest home im-
provement companies
in northeast Ohio. They
specialize in sales and
professional installation
of three- and four-sea-
son sunrooms, vinyl
replacement windows,
vinyl siding, ixed and retractable awnings, pa-
tio covers and screened
enclosures, iberglass
and steel entry doors,
storm doors and glass
block windows.
Now is a good time
for homeowners to buy
windows, sunrooms,
doors, vinyl siding and
other items to improve
the appearance of their
homes, Hogan said.
WSA Inc. had a good
response from crowds
at last year’s Home
Show.
“We participate in
the show every year,”
Hogan said. “The event
really jump-starts the
spring for the busi-
ness.”
WSA Inc. provides
free in-home estimates
days or evenings at
the customer’s con-
venience. For more

JEFFERSON — Home
Show visitors who want
clean, fresh water in
their homes don’t have
to wait for a raincheck,
say the owners of Crys-
tal Clear Water.
Crystal Clear Water’s
booth will include infor-
mation and advice on
water treatment, along
with models of soften-
ers, tanks and pumps.
Crystal Clear Water
provides residential and
and business services
and also installs and
services pools and spas,
for those who want to
add a relaxing oasis to
their home.
Richard and Lydia
Machczynski are the
owners of Crystal Clear
Water in Jefferson.
Their products and ser-
vices include softeners,
iron iltration systems, jet pumps, well pumps,
solution and holding
tanks, cartridge ilters, reverse osmosis, pond
aeration, pool supplies
and chemicals, spas
and spa chemicals.
Throughout the month
of May, high quality
chemicals for pools and
spas are on sale.
Richard is a master
water specialist who
diagnoses and treats
hard water, iron water,
cloudy water, strong
smelling or bad tasting
water. He offers free es-
timates or a free water
analysis to assess cus-
tomers’ needs before
starting a job for them.
“Master water spe-
cialists pass a general
certiied water spe-
cialist exam, which
covers many areas of
the process of water,”
he said. “Then we are
tested separately in
the following areas:
disinfection, iltration, reverse osmosis/ultra-
iltration, deionization, ozonation. We are also
certiied installers. This
is all accomplished
through Water Quality
Association, a national
accreditation body that
develops the tests and
courses. We are also
licensed with the Ohio
Department of Health.”
Lydia said the best
part of the job is help-
ing customers.
“The favorite part
of our business is
improving our custom-
ers’ in-home water,
whether city, well or
pond water,” she said,
“Rich comes in to the
customer’s home and
tests the water to see
what is in it. He inds out what the customer
wants: are they con-
cerned about smell,
taste, bacteria, calcium
build up, staining? We
have the solution for all
these and many other
concerns. We want our
customers happy with
the end result.”
They can also help
customers save money
in the long run.
“Water softeners and
reverse osmosis save
money and energy,”
Richard said. “Your hot
water tank expends
less energy and lasts
many years longer
because calcium build-
up is prevented and
you don’t have to deal
with replacing faucets
from hard water dam-
age. Reverse osmosis
makes your water taste
so much better you can
stop buying drinking
water in plastic bottles,
which is also better for
the environment.”
This will be the eighth
Ashtabula County
Home Show for the
Machczynskis. Both said
they like meeting their
customers in the re-
laxed atmosphere of the
Home Show and enjoy
getting to know more
local residents there.
Crystal Clear Water is
open Monday through
Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30
p.m., Saturday 9 a.m.

CONNEAUT — For
almost a half-century, a
member of the Burdick
family has tended to
the plumbing, heating
and cooling needs of
Conneaut-area resi-
dents.
Burdick Plumbing and
Heating, 228 Harbor
St., Conneaut, marks 48
years in business this
year, and will also be
one of more than 40
vendors at this week-
end’s Ashtabula County
Home Show.
The business began
in 1968 strictly as a
plumber operation,
said Duane Burdick II.
Plumbing is still in the
name, but today the
bulk of the business
— “about 75 percent”
— deals with heating
and air conditioning, he
said. Burdick’s also sells
and services Generac
generators.
“We also handle radi-
ant heat and geo-ther-
mal heating,” Burdick
said. “But we still have a
plumbing division.”
Burdick Plumbing and
Heating employs eight
people and has a leet of nearly a half-dozen
vehicles.
Service calls cover
a wide territory, from
Madison to Erie, Penn-
sylvania.
Like so many other ar-
eas of the house, tech-
nology is making big
inroads in the heating
business. Furnaces, for
example, have become
electronic marvels, Bur-
dick said.
“Furnaces today are
very sophisticated and
are operated by com-
puters,” he said.
Demand is also grow-
ing for thermostats con-
trolled and monitored
by the Internet, Burdick
said.
Owners can check
on the warmth or cool-
ness of their homes via
a smartphone connec-
tion.
The business can use
the same technology to
keep track of furnace
operations for residents
spending the winter out
of the area. On more
than one occasion, Bur-
dick was able to detect
a problem with a fur-
nace using the Internet,
he said.
The good news is
21st century equipment
can be easily it into 19th and 20th century
homes and buildings,
Burdick said.
“We can adapt this
new technology to older
homes,” he said.
Burdick, 39, has been
with the business for 18
years, but it was not his
irst choice. “I actual-ly went to school for
drafting,” he said.
After working in an
ofice for a year, Bur-dick said he realized a
career stuck inside four
walls was not appeal-
ing.
“I went back to school
to study heating and air
conditioning,” he said.
“Now I’m in the ield quite a bit.”

ASHTABULA — The
Ashtabula County Home
Show 2016 will continue
its long-standing rela-
tionship with Quality
Builders.
“We’ve been doing the
Ashtabula County Home
Show since they’ve been
at the Mall,” owner Mike
Faeges said. “We were
one of the irst. We’ve been there well over a
decade.”
Quality Builders, 4139
North Ridge Road E.,
is a fully licensed and
bonded home improve-
ment specialist.
No subcontractors
are used and all work is
done in house. Faeg-
es said Quality Builders
has been in business
since 1978 and has 12
employees.
He said Quality
Builders does trade and
Home shows all over
northern Ohio, north-
western Pennsylvania
and northwestern New
York, but the Ashtabula
County Home Show is
one of his favorites.
“We do shows in
Niles, Erie, Youngstown,
Warren, Austintown and
all over,” he said. “We
cover a 200-mile radius
out of Ashtabula. The
Ashtabula show has
always been a bit of a
gem. You can never tell
what you might ind there.”
Faeges said basement
de-watering systems are
Quality Builders’ major
enterprise.
“We use three differ-
ent basement de-water-
ing systems,” he said.
“We do exterior excava-
tion, interior drain tile
systems and baseboard
systems.”
He said the interior
drain tile systems move
water to an exterior
sump pump or drain
and are the most popu-
lar of the three systems.
“We do about 300 of
those a year,” he said.
“We also do a lot of
complete remodeling
work. We install new
kitchens, bathrooms
and additions.”
Besides installing
basement dewatering
systems and complete
home remodeling and
repair, Quality Builders
does a lot of work for
Veterans Affairs in Erie.
“We do a lot of work
out of the VA in Erie,”
he said. “We work for
veterans in their
private homes, install-
ing open doorways,
ramps and other Amer-
icans with Disabilities
Act (ADA) compliance
jobs.”

While the Ashtabula
County Home Show
is traditionally seen
as a place for vendors
across the county to
show off their wares
and services, the show
also draws from across
Northeast Ohio.
Kevin Spies of Kitchen
Saver of North Olmsted
said they have been at
the Ashtabula County
Home Show for the
last ive or six years. Spies is familiar with
the Ashtabula Mall and
the county, having had
a location in the mall
for a few years before
leaving in 2012 to focus
on other areas.
Kitchen Saver is
known for one-day
remodels, particularly
focusing on kitchen
cabinets and bath tubs
— which get overlaid
on top of the existing structure.
“With the way the
market is, we look for
consumer shows and
high trafic areas we can put displays out
for various amounts of
time,” he said.
Spies said his busi-
ness serves all of
Northeast Ohio, so he
wouldn’t want to pass
up on a home show op-
portunity. They usually
have a booth at the four
or ive home shows across the region.
“They cater to people
looking to improve their
home. Obviously we tie
right in. We’re not going
to miss a home show,”
he said.
Patti Stephens is
a dealer for Gutter
Helmet, which has an
ofice out of Berea, and has a coverage area that
includes 44 Ohio coun-
ties. Last year was the
irst at the Ashtabula County Home Show for
Gutter Helmet — which
is a system designed
to prevent gutter clogs
and guarantees custom-
ers never have to clean
their gutters again.
“They generate a lot
of business for us,” she
said.
The Gutter Helmet
exhibit this weekend will feature an example of the system with live
running water, she said,
as well as coupons for
20 percent off good for
two weeks.
Spies said home
shows are valuable for
both the exposure to new customers and the
business they generate
from the shows.
“We keep it fairly the
same at each show we’ll
do. We’ll do special
home show promo-
tions,” he said.
Stephens said she and
her employees try to
get to as many events
as possible, such as
home shows, business
expos, county fairs and festivals, etc.
“We’re doing eight
(events) this weekend.
This is our very busy
time of year, and we try
to do all events, try to
be out there anytime
there’s a crowd,” she
said. “We reach out to
the community.”
