Factory Testing of All STIHL Equipment
Every engine manufactured by STIHL has been started
and operated in a test cell on the assembly line.
The test cell makes carburetor adjustments and verifies
that the engine runs properly at idle, acceleration, and at
full throttle under load.
It is extremely rare that a new unit will need any
adjustments or repair due to transport damage.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.

Unboxing the Unit
Always inspect the unit for shipping damage and
understand all the contents.
The Instruction Manual contains detailed information on safety,
assembly, operation, maintenance, and specifications for each
STIHL model.
Instruction Manuals are available for download as Adobe “pdf” files
at: www.stihlusa.com.
Make sure you keep all manuals and accessories together to
ensure the customer receives them.
The MS 211 for example comes with a
scrench, screwdriver, bar scabbard,
bar, and chain boxes, and an
Instruction Manual.

Choke Definition
A choke is a mechanism that will reduce intake air flow,
resulting in a higher fuel ratio, so the engine will start
easier.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.
23 April 1, 2016
© STIHL INCORPORATED
Purge Primer
The purpose of a purge primer is
to purge air out of the fuel system
and fill it with fuel, so it will be
easier to start.
Excessive pumping of the purge
primer on a STIHL Product will not
flood the unit; it just recirculates the
fuel back to the tank.
Any unit without a purge primer
may require additional pulls on
the starter with the unit in closed
choke position to prime the
carburetor with fuel.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.
24 April 1, 2016
© STIHL INCORPORATED
Fuel Mixing Procedure
The fuel mix should include:
STIHL two-stroke engine oil at a mix ratio of 50:1 with a minimum
of 89 octane or higher gasoline.
STIHL Premium Quality 2-cycle oils are recommended for
all STIHL equipment.
Make sure to precisely combine the 2-cycle oil and
gasoline inside of an approved container, with the oil being
put in first, then the gasoline. After this is completed,
replace the lid and shake vigorously to mix up the
contents.

Decompression Valve
Decompression Valve
On some of the larger chainsaw models and clearing saws, the
decompression valve, when pressed, bleeds off some of the
compression when the starter is pulled to make starting easier.
It’s also important to note that when there’s a “false start” or “pop,” the
valve needs to be reset.
For other STIHL chainsaw common features please visit:

For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.

ElastoStart™ and Easy2Start™
The ElastoStart™ starter handle has a built in shock
absorbing element as a comfort feature.
Products equipped with the Easy2Start™ can be started
with less effort at a lower cranking speed.
ElastoStart™
Easy2Start™

Opening Toolless Filler Caps
Step 1: Flip up the lever and slowly turn left to the vent
position of the cap at about ¼ turn where the cap is held
in place by the thread.
Step 2: Once the fumes have been relieved, turn the cap
further to the ¼ turn position.
Step 3: The toolless cap can now be removed from the
tank thread.
Step 4: Remove filler cap.

tank opening lining up.
Step 6: Using the grip, press the cap down firmly while
turning it clockwise as far as it will go (approx. ¼ turn).
Step 7: The positioning mark on the cap should now line
up with the closed mark on the tank.

Kickback
Kickback may occur when
the moving saw chain near
the upper quadrant of the
bar nose contacts a solid
object or is pinched.
The greater the force of the
kickback reaction, the more
difficult it becomes for the
operator to control the saw.

The STIHL color code system includes powerheads, replacement chains, and guide bars.
Green marks the products “green family” which are designed to reduce the risk of kickback injury and to comply with the ANSI B175.1 kickback standard.

Bar and Chain Identification
The Bar and Chain Catalog has almost all the information
you will need when repairing or replacing the bar and
chain on a saw.
There are many different graphs and tables in the book, so
it is best to familiarize yourself with these so you can gain
the optimal amount of information from them.
For more detailed information, refer to the Bar and Chain Catalog.

The infographic below can help you better familiarize yourself with what chain you have and what the different digits and letters mean.
The infographic in orange below is in regards to the chain and how you can identify it by a single number stamped on the cutter link of the chain.
We also have a chain converter smartphone app that will convert Oregon chain to STIHL chain.

Bar and Chain Identification
Selecting a bar for your saw is a similar process to the
aforementioned chain selection, as they also refer to an
ordered number system for proper selection.
On the bar there is an
11-digit part number.
Remember the number
and the model of the
saw, then refer to the
Bar Selection Guide.

Chain Adjustment
Some models have a front chain tensioner.
Most have a side chain tensioner that is more convenient
to use.
Saws come with a combination wrench, sometimes
referred to as a “scrench,” to make bar and chain service
easy. Loosen the bar nuts on the sprocket cover.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.

Correct Cold Chain Tension
Always hold up the nose of the bar and adjust the
tensioner so the slack in the chain is taken up.
While holding up on the nose of the bar, tighten the bar nut
or Quick Chain Adjuster and check the chain tension.
The chain must fit snugly against the underside of the bar
and with the chain brake disengaged, it must still be
possible to pull the chain along with a gloved hand.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.

Correct Cold Chain Tension
With the chain brake disengaged, pull the chain using a
glove through from the top side and it should rotate freely
without any slack appearing.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.

Correct Cold Chain Tension
Regardless of bar length, check
for correct chain tension by
pulling down on the chain at the
middle of the bar.
The tension is correct when the
chain snaps back up to the
bottom bar rail when the bar and
chain is cold.
Remember to retighten the bar
nuts on the sprocket cover.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.

First Recommended Method for Starting a
Chain Saw
Never Drop Start a
Chain Saw
Place your saw on the
ground. Make sure you have
a firm footing – check that
the chain is not touching the
ground.
Hold the saw firmly on the
ground with your left hand on
the front handle – your
thumb should be under the
handle.
Put your right foot into the
rear handle and press down.
For more detailed information, refer to the model-specific Instruction Manual.

First Recommended Method for Safely
Starting a Chain Saw
Pull the starter grip slowly with
your right hand until you feel it
engage – and then give it a brisk
strong pull while pushing down the
front handle at the same time.
Do not pull out the starter rope to
full length – it might otherwise
break. Do not let the starter grip
snap back. Guide it slowly back
into the housing so that the starter
rope can rewind properly.
