Description:Design a magazine cover that showcases a self-portrait as well as articles about yourself.

Date: October 19th 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe PhotoshopAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Learn Adobe IndesignLearn how to use and implement shape masks.Learn the FOCUS process

Process: I started the design for this magazine by googling many different types of magazine covers and trying to get a catalog of ideas to pull from. I did not want to use a popular magazine title because I wanted it to be focused more on me and my message than a typical magazines articles. I next created four different sketches to try and decide what I wanted to magazine to look like and decided on the top left sketch to base my shape map on. My shape map really helped me to align my objects and start to create contrast and focal points due to the color values I was assigning different elements (I created this shape mask in InDesign.) The project really started to take shape as I replaced each different placeholder element with images, and titles, and cover stories. I really like how this turned but felt like it was still missing something to fit in with what all of the professional magazines have to offer.

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn how to use masks in photoshopLearn how to use filters in photoshopLearn how to create a photo montage

Process: My little family and I were on a trip to Washington D.C. this past week so I thought it would be fun to incorporate the divine make up of our country into my project.

I first formulated my idea, I knew that I wanted a monochromatic blue theme, so I thought night photos would best serve this purpose, and also instill the feeling I wanted out of these photos. I started to organize my photo’s that I had taken on the trip and thought that the Iwo Jima memorial, as well as the Washington Monument would contrast well to incorporate that feeling of reverence, and respect for the foundations of this country, as well as how the freedoms of this country have been fought for.

I next started composting my images together and deciding on good contrasting fonts. I liked the script font I used to go with the important words of the “Declaration of Independence” as well as “Constitution.” I wasn’t sure if my two images would fulfill the requirements of the project so I added a third image of the constitution on the bottom. I didn’t necessarily like this but added it to make sure I fulfilled the requirements.

BrochureDescription:Design a brochure for a company.

Date: December 1, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe PhotoshopAdobe InDesignAdobe Illustrator

Objectives:Learn Adobe IndesignLearn how to use and implement shape masks.Learn the FOCUS processLearn how to design a double sided folding brochure.

Process: I stated by creating my logo in adobe illustrator. I also created the movie film strip in illustrator, and then later imported pictures into indesign into the empty white frames. After I created by logo, I added a nice blue gradient behind it to make it pop, this would set the theme for the color that I used.I used photoshop to cut out the temple, using layer masks, the magic wand, brushes, and the quick selection tool.I used alignment in the design to try and make sure that each word of text was lined up with ones in columns opposite. I also set up paragraph styles to style my headings as well as my body copy. Finally I exported my brochure with cropp marks for the print shop to know where to cut it.I had a bit of fun trying to explain how I wanted the images printed two sided, without the print shop lady trying to flip over my design, making it upside down.

Webpage MockupDescription:Design a website homepage using a grid.

Date: November 16, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn how to effectively organize photoshop documents using groups and foldersLearn how to design a webpage mockup on a grid system.

Process: Because my company I was creating this website for is a motel, I felt like I had to build the website within the general expectations for a motel website. I checked out several different motel websites, and started my sketches based on a couple of different styles that I liked.

My next object was to bring my sketches to life with a shape map in photoshop. It is here that I really started to organize the layout, based on a grid system.Having the shape map works nicely to help me organize things before I start just throwing in elements everywhere. It works nicely in creating clipping masks to images thus keeping the organization in my previous step. Because my logo didn’t really work with my shape map, I decided to change it up a little bit and align it left, which allowed me to add another couple of call to action buttons up in the header. I finished my design by listening to critiques and changing the alignment of a couple of objects.

PhotodesignDescription:By using photography and design skills, this project was created to display the fun nature and great color scheme of our local soda pop shop.

Date: October 12, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:Learn how to use photoshop to create an effective photodesignLearn how to implement a color scheme into deisgn

Process: I first decided on my color scheme. I thought of using the nice red rocks in Southern Utah to display something that related to my local. I choose a complimentary color scheme of brick, and teal. I had my wife dress in a nice teal shirt and we went and took some photos of her taking photos, against the backdrop of warner valley (a bright orange colored mountain landscape.)I did like how the photo turned out. The mountains did not reflect the orange I was going for. Instead, due to atmospheric perspective they were turning out more of a purple hue. I did not like this, and I could not get the mountain to turn orange without causing my wife to look like she had laid in the tanning booth for four weeks straight. I decided that I was going to revisit the color scheme and dream up something else local that I could control the colors on a little better. This time I chose a triadic color scheme of red, yellow, and blue (the primary colors). Next we went and did another quick photoshoot. I decided she would dress in blue pants, and a red shirt, and we thought of Swig, our local drink shop because the building is painted in that exact color scheme. I pulled my photo into light room to make a couple of quick adjustments from shooting flat.I created a new 8.5 x 11 inch document in Photoshop. Then I started the design process, deciding on the content and the layout of the typography. I liked using the decorative font because I felt like it matched Swig’s actual logo pretty good. Then I choose to contrast it with a sans serif font.

Business IdentityDescription:Create a logo for a company/service/organization and establish a visual identity across documents.

Date: October 26, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: Adobe PhotoshopAdobe InDesign

Objectives:Learn how to use photoshop and InDesign to create an identity for a business.

Process: My first step in creating my logos was to organize a couple of different ideas in my mind of what I was going for. Because this logo is for an actual business, I took into account the business owners input. They are an old motel in the heart of Springdale, Utah. Which is located at the gates of Zion National Park. Part of the brand that they have built over the last 40 year has been the unique shape of their sign. Which is why I elected to use this shape in the illustrated sketch of the logo design. Because I wanted to display the qualities of honesty, and cleanliness, I decided to opt for a monochromatic blue color scheme, as opposed to the complementary red and green I started with.To add contrast and make the ZION portion pop, I decided to use white space to create the Z in Zion. And the white space is created out of an outline of the mountain that sits right behind Zion Park Motel, called the Watchman.

HTML & CSS CodingDescription:Code a custom webpage with HTML and CSS.

Date: November 9, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: Text WranglerNetbeansBlue Host

Objectives:Learn how to implement HTML and CSS to create a beautiful website for a client.

Process: First thing is first. I started with my logo, which is the whole purpose of this website. I started with a left justified logo at 300px wide, however, I decided that centered at 500px made the logo stand out and provide greater contrast, thus helping with the focal point of the document. I next started using the <h2>, <p>, and <ul> tags to divide up and contain my content in a logical, and hierarchal manner. After I got all of my content in the HTML file, I switched over to the CSS file, and started styling the page. I added the color scheme to my page design by using the hex colors from my logo. I created the background image by creating a 10x1000px rectangle with a gradient fill that repeated only on the X axis, then filled in the rest of the screen with a white background, which my gradient morphed into. Lastly I validated my HTML and CSS.

InfographicDescription:Create an infographic that organizes data in a visually pleasing way.

Date: November 3, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: PhotoshopIllustrator

Objectives:Learn how to visually share information in a creative way.Learn how to use illustrator to design elements.

Process: I knew that I wanted to create a project thats topic was based on something that I am passionate about. As I thought about it, I thought of the Google Pixel XL. I just got this phone and I thought it would be a fun comparison to show Iphone users that android phones are just as good if not better. I did some research to find some data showing the different specs of both comparable phones. I chose the Pixel XL and the Iphone 7 plus because they are the top of the line for both phone companies. I also found information on the different market shares that each company has and found out that Apple markets primarily only to the USA. I then sketched out some ideas for layout of my infographic. Next was time to digitize! I started recreating the google pixel xl, as well as many icons to visually show the information. I created the global sales chart by recreating the android logo as well as the apple logo, and showing them appropriately for their percentage of global sales.

PreziDescription:Create an instructional presentation using the Prezi software to demonstrate it’s features and capabilities.

Date: October 5, 2016

Course/Instructor:Comm 130 Section 16Bianca Rodriguez

Program(s)/Tools: IllustratorPhotoshopPrezi.com

Objectives:Learn how to design an effective presentation. Learn to communicate in less words, and more graphics.

Process: I started this project by thinking first about my message. I asked myself, what do I want to get across to my audience. I decided since my audience would be my fellow classmates, I would include a message about something that is important to me, but also that they have very limited knowledge about. I figured if I kept the content simple enough, my message would be very interesting to my audience. After this I started to organize how I would go about portraying this message in a prezi project. I thought that a strong visual aid would be very helpful in keeping my message interesting. So I decided to sketch out a couple of different ideas. After that, I found a couple of very good illustrations online that I could download via my free adobe stock trial. I used some of the good typography principles to help contrast the message and balance the visual aid. I used a nice white color to unify the design, since the lines on the runway were white I thought this unified the project, and kept the color scheme together.
