HOO-HOO AROUND THE WORLDGreetings members and happy holidays!!It’s hard to believe that we’re already looking to Winter 2020! So much has gone by and yet there’s still so much to come. I wanted to take some time in my editorial to acknowledge something going on in Hoo-Hoo right now that I think is pretty cool—international clubs. We’ve got a few stories in this issue that highlight the efforts of our international clubs and I think that’s something really special about this organization. For example, the Leschenaultia Hoo-Hoo Club is making enormous strides to not only promote Hoo-Hoo, but the forest products industry as whole. The club hosted three events in October, all aimed to bring awareness to the lumber industry. The club’s aim was to not only shine light on the industry, but also to showcase the technology, diversity and employment opportunities it offers. Another thing that’s impressive about this club is that their current membership is at just 29. But that small number does not stop them. Something that really stood out to me in this issue was on page 15 when the club talks about an attendee from one of its Forest Industries Teaching Tour. They noted that the teachers were fully engaged and impressed with what they saw. That one of the teachers approached a member at the end and shared how they have a new appreciation for this industry. It’s things like this that will make a difference in our industry and will attract the next generation. It’s clear that Leschenaultia Club un-derstands that in order to connect our industry with young students, you have to start with the teachers. And that’s exactly what they did. Other clubs like the Malaysia Hoo-Hoo Club are coming up with new ideas to bring awareness to the industry. The club’s 5k Forestry Run is another great example. There are countless ways we can bring awareness to this great industry we’re all so lucky to be a part of. And some people—especially young students—aren’t even aware of the opportunities that could be available to them. But one thing’s for sure, nothing is going to happen unless we take the appropriate action. And clubs like Malaysia and Leschenaultia are taking the right steps to help Hoo-Hoo and the lumber industry thrive.

May we all find ways to grow together in 2020!

LOG & TALLY · WINTER · 2020

A Season of Snark TravelsSteve Allison 98064 is making his rounds to as many Hoo-Hoo events

as possible—and he’s making new relationships in the process.

I’ve hit the ground running! Here are a few highlights of my first few months in office:

We’re working on changes for a more efficient printer and mail house for Log and Tally to cut costs.

We’re working on options that will allow us to mail less copies of the Log and Tally and deliver them in an electronic method.

I’ve got my committees in place and we are working on building membership. I have reviewed the policies on committees and we’ll be addressing them at the mid-year board meeting in Sacramento, CA., Jan. 25-27. I’ve also set up a Google Drive for each committee as well as HHI so that transition for the next Snark will be seamless and easy.

I’m working with Robyn Young Rameses 104, S9 JIX, on getting the Daytona Beach, FL., club reactivated.

I’m also working with Gary Gamble Rameses 95 on getting the Reno, NV., club reactivated. We’re still looking for a venue but have a guest speaker for January set up as well as a Concat. If you know anyone interested in joining in the Reno area, please have them contact me at [email protected].

I met with our CPA in Gurdon, AR., when I was at the forest festival and I have requested several house cleaning items from the Legislation and Good of the Order committee to clean up rules to fit our business practices and accounting procedures.

Snark Steve Allison and the rest of the board of directors at this year’s annual Hoo-Hoo convention in Whistler.

My TravelsOne of the great things about being Snark is the

travel—seeing new places and meeting members from all over the world.

On Oct. 15 I made a visit to Club 117 in Southern California. We had a great social event before dinner and a concat with 11 kittens. I enjoyed meeting each of you and look forward to coming back for your golf tournament in June.

Oct. 25-26 I went to the HHI office and met with our CPA to review our practices and what services they are providing to us. I worked with the office on getting organized with a few things and attended the Forest Festival. It was a rainy weekend and attendance was low, but we still managed to buy the ham for $450. In attendance were Paul Todd, Jack Miller, Mike Miller, Warren Biss, Deidre Fountain, David Jones, Stacey Jones, Carrolyn Schiappa (Breeden) and Ronnie Schiappa and Beth Thomas.

Oct. 28, I visited the Houston Club 23 and caught up with longtime friends. They had a great golf tournament and dinner. It was great to hear that they are in search of a new central meeting place and trying to get back to regular meetings.

On Nov. 13, I visited Black Bart Club 181—It was a great meeting with 7 kittens being the concatted and lots of enthusiasm. We were blessed to have 3 Rameses in attendance. Jesse Weaver with the Redwood Regional Logging Conference, www.rrlc.net was the guest speaker. We have 1.75 billion bd. ft. a year in growth, but due to logging limitations, environmental issues, and government regulations, we are only cutting 250 million bd. ft. a year.

Dec. 6, I went to Harry L. Folsom club 13 in Boston for their Concat. We had lunch with the board, then the concat with 5 kittens. They have a great group of members and were a very hospitable group.

Dec. 8, I had dinner with the Detroit board at the Dearborn Inn and the following day I attended the Detroit club 28 Christmas luncheon. Special guest Ann George told us about Detroit Blight Busters, www.detroitblightbusters.org, and how they’re helping revitalize Detroit. The club is launching incentives to get the youth involved in their club and businesses. Great job for growing Hoo-Hoo.

On Dec. 10, I attended the 49th Annual Lumberman of the Year awards dinner for Twin Cities club 12. Congratulations to Wayne Yokiel on being this year’s Lumberman of the Year! There were about 60 attendees to share the day with Wayne!

It’s been a great season so far and I’m grateful to be able to spend time with so many wonderful people! Be sure to see my travel agenda on page 14!

The Rameses vehicle RV104 left Whistler SPARKED by

all the goodwill and fellowship received during the 127th HHI Convention. Dave and Angela Trytko of Vancouver Club stopped by RV104 to wish us a great trip back to Florida. They invited us to their home in Langley, B.C., to check out their RV and home.

We took them up on the offer, and before we knew it, we were enjoying a steak dinner and a tour of their homestead. You can build just about anything in their spacious workspace. Dave demonstrated his laser machine and presented us with the metal Hoo-Hoo logo from convention. Thank you again, Dave and Angela! We look forward to doing a bit of RV’ing with you down the road. Next stop, back to John, Rameses 99, and Connie Yeakel’s home to pick up a few items we had left with them on our way to Whistler. They presented us with a large box

of Washington’s best honey crisp apples and delicious tomatoes from their garden and we presented them with one of Paul Beltgen’s HHI charcuterie board. We were blessed by these two sweethearts.

The “Be Young Journey” continued to Cedar Springs, UT. We put down roots there and were joined by a dear friend, Gloria Hogue, to hike our way through Kanarra Falls, Bryce, Cedar Breaks, Kolob, Spring Creek and Zion Canyons. Our shining achievement was hiking Angel’s Landing (5,790 elevation), located in Zion National Park. This is a 5-mile round trip, strenuous hike that’s straight up the mountain, mixed with 21 steep switchbacks named Walter’s Wiggles.

It literally took our breath away! I figured if I could do this, I could increase Hoo-Hoo membership this year! LOL! We hiked all day, every day, and loved the adventure. Gloria left for home and we headed

to the Northern Rim of the Grand Canyon. Words can’t describe the majesty we beheld. We fell in love with Utah and can’t wait to return.

On our journey back to Florida, we stopped in the great state of Texas and visited the Alamo as we made arrangements to meet up with Roland, S9 J7, and Marilyn Massey. We had a great time meeting their grandson and enjoying dinner together. All I want to say about this visit is Roland will make an excellent Snark down the road! Go Roland!

In the two months we were gone, we shared our “Be Young Journey” with many wonderful Hoo-Hoo members and witnessed the beauty of this country we all love and call home. Please continue to share your Hoo-Hoo story with others. Keep Sparking!

HHI – JURISDICTION IIIt’s hard to believe that we’re in

the second quarter of the Hoo-Hoo year. Jurisdiction II doesn’t have a whole lot to report. We still only have one active club, Detroit 28.

The club held its annual Christ-mas luncheon on December 9 at The Dearborn Inn and the turnout was great with 70 people in atten-dance, including special guests, Snark Steve Allison, Reno, NV; Robyn Young RM 104, Daytona, FL; Jack Miller RM 105, Boston, MA.; and Mandi Siwek, Club #12, Twin Cities. MN.

We also had a board meeting prior to the luncheon to present planned meetings in 2020. Thank you to everyone who joined in! Health, Happiness, and Long Life,Jim Maicki L-86469Supreme 9 Jurisdiction 2

HHI – JURISDICTION IVIt gives me great pleasure to

submit my JIV Supreme 9 Report and give you a little insight into our neck of the woods. Since being

elected to office, I have so far visited Cairns Club, Melbourne and North East Victoria, where I presided over the Concat of three kittens.

As I write this, I’m sitting on board flight JQ91 (Jetstar) flying back from Malaysia where I’ve spent a week with our Vice Gerent Clarence Tan visiting sawmills, attending the MTC Expo and most importantly, finalizing details for the upcoming Kuala Lumber JIV Mini Convention next April.

This is a very organized club and a shining light in JIV. I reach out to you all to try and attend this con-vention to help make it a success. JIV will also be celebrating 50 years as a Chartered Jurisdiction of HHI, so this is even more reason to put KL in your diary—as we celebrate ‘The cats are plenty in 2020’.

In my welcome speech at Ro-torua, I mentioned our ever-dwin-dling membership and have been thinking about this ever since. I asked our membership to embrace the 4 R’s, Retention, Relevance, Re-invigorate and Reinstate, as a means to bolster and maintain our mem-

bers. I also reflected on discussions within our membership, and noted that whenever we discuss declining membership, we all seem to accept it as a given.

However, by adopting the 4 R’s, I believe we can save our wonderful organization. After all, if we aren’t relevant in today’s society, how can we “Reinvigorate, Retain and Reinstate” membership? We need to look at each club’s autonomous values and what they give to their community to help make it a better place, and promote this to our kit-tens so that they want to join. Hope to see you all in KL, and I wish you and all your loved one’s a very Merry Christmas!

running your clubs. These people are truly dedicated to Hoo-Hoo and they should always be recognized for what they do! If you’re at an event or in contact with one of them in your day-to-day business, take a moment to thank them. They are who keep us going!

I want to thank the convention committee of Club 48 for all their hard work in making the Whistler HHI convention a success. I also want to thank the Cowichan Club for agreeing to take on an upcom-ing HHI convention. There will be plenty of details to follow about that.

Congratulations to Paul Beltgens for coming on board the HHI exec-utive as our Second Vice President. Paul’s going to make a great Snark of the Universe in coming years. As many of you know, we lost one of our members recently. Roger Mar-shall passed away and will be truly missed. Our condolences go out to his family and everyone at Cana-dian Overseas Log & Lumber who worked with him for many years.

Membership and marketing are always important when it comes to Hoo-Hoo International and your local club. If you know anyone who you think would make a great

member, let one of your executive board members know and they will get that person the proper docu-mentation to join. Also, if you have any ideas as to marketing Hoo-Hoo, either at the international or local levels, please let me know. I would be happy to discuss your idea(s) with you.

HHI – JURISDICTION VIGood day to all. I write this

early on a quiet Thanksgiving Day morning. Northern and Southern California fires have been put out and the first significant rain and snow is upon us. Winter is here. Hoping everyone had a safe and blessed Thanksgiving.

What’s been happening in J6 and what will happen from Thanksgiv-ing to the end of January?

The Southern California Club 117 had a Concat October 16. 56 members, along with 13 kittens, were in attendance as well as the newly installed Snark, Steve Allison. Way to go, SoCal, in getting a great

turn-out! Black Bart Club 181 hosted its

annual golf tourney at Ukiah Golf Course on October 11. 52 golfers participated and the weather was a perfect 80 degrees. Good camarade-rie, food, drinks and lots of fun was had by all.

Black Bart also hosted a Concat on November 13. 35 members and seven kittens were in attendance, along with new Snark, Steve Allison. Jesse Weaver, president of the Red-wood Logging Conference was our guest speaker. Both the Humboldt Club 63 and the Sacramento Club 117 have been relatively quiet, but that is about to change shortly.

Upcoming meetings and events listed so far are as follows: On Feb-ruary 8, we will host our fourth an-nual Valentines Dinner and Dance on the Delta King River Boat on the Sacramento River. It’s an event not to be missed! The three Northern California clubs have put together a trio of events that we like to call

“The Trifecta.” Sacramento 109 is hosting a

Concat on January 28 at the Club Pheasant Restaurant in West Sac-ramento; on January 29, Black Bart 181 will host its annual Industry Night at the Broiler Steak House in Ukiah; and January 30, Humboldt 63 will have its annual Crab Feed in Eureka at the Elk Lodge. Members and guests come from all parts of California, Oregon and Nevada to attend.

That’s it for now. Have a success-ful and prosperous 2020!!

Nine of Jurisdiction Nine. All those 9’s!

I’m currently gathering informa-tion on past members, members-at-large and prospective members in the great state of Florida—Volusia County to be more exact. My goal is to start a Hoo-Hoo Club in the Daytona Beach area in 2020. If you’re a current member of HHI and live in Florida, or if you would like to help me in this great endeav-or, please contact me ASAP at (586) 381-4569.

John Taylor, DS9 J6, has agreed to help update the procedure when it comes to reactivating or starting a new club. I look forward to working with John so that we can share with all our membership how exciting it is to form a new club!

First Vice President Paul Todd and I will also be working together to build the membership for Dick Wilson/Atlanta Club 1 in honor of his late wife, Renee! Renee is deeply missed and would love the idea. So would her dad, Carol Owens, past Snark of the Universe!

I appreciate all the support I can get to put these two clubs on the Hoo-Hoo map! Keep Sparking!

J3 – TACOMA-OLYMPIA CLUB 89

It is so hard to believe that it’s time to write another Log & Tally report. As I’ve said before, time is just speeding by and I’m constantly

running to keep up, but never very successfully.

In October this year, a group of club members met at the East-side Boys and Girls Club to hand out pumpkins that were donated by Fred Meyer and Sterino Farms to the kids. After they got their pumpkin, they had the opportunity to decorate it and we got to see so many fun faces with quite a few brightly colored pumpkins.

Two days before Thanksgiving, we gathered at the Homeless Dome near downtown Tacoma to serve a turkey dinner for our Annual Turkey Feed. President Chad Dagais and board member Brandon Bennett had prepared 200 pounds of turkey (donated by Fred Meyer), mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes, stuffing, gravy, green bean casserole, cranberry sauce, rolls and pop (aka soda).

For dessert, Brandon’s mom baked berry pies topped with whipped cream. We also handed out clothing, including socks, coats and blankets. There were approximately 80 people at the Homeless Dome. Afterwards, we packed up the remaining food into take-out boxes, loaded everything on to a bus, and went out on the streets to hand out more dinners to the homeless.

It was obvious that our efforts were really appreciated. Everyone has a different story, but one from an older lady really sticks in my mind. She was so nice and happy, and seemingly content with her situation, but all I keep thinking is that no one should have to struggle so hard to maintain their day-to-

day life. The event was one night but it made a lot of people very happy for that one meal. A big thank you to Chad and Brandon for making it happen.

December 3rd was our annual Christmas party at Oakbrook Golf Club. We had our silent and live auction with Vice President Jim Miller who served as an excellent auctioneer. The food was delicious, as usual. We asked people who were attending to bring a toy for donation for the Toy Giveaway at the Eastside Boys and Girls Club later this month and those who didn’t bring a toy donated money. It was a very fun event, and everyone had a good time.

Next up in 2020 will be our Crab Feed on February 11th. The Snark of the Universe will be visiting with us on that day and we’re hoping to have a special speaker for everyone’s entertainment. Happy Holidays to one and all, and wishes for a New Year filled with health, happiness, and long life!

Club 33’s Annual Crab Feed will be held February 7 at Shadow Hills Country Club, Junction City, OR.

Our club recently added Joe Honochick, KayCee Hallstrom and Nick Lake to the Board of Direc-tors. In addition, Lisa Gardner is beginning the process to take over Secretary functions succeeding Ar-chie Brown who has held this office since August 1983. A person not yet announced will handle the financial affairs of the Club.

Late this fall, our area lost two long time but not current Club 33 members. Tom Murdoch passed at 95 after a short illness. He joined Club 33 in 1973. He had an outstanding record of service aboard the Battleship California during WWII. Daryl Richardson, 82, joined Club 33 in 1964. He had owned A & R Lumber Co. in the past. Daryl was a past president of Club 33.

J3 – WINEMA CLUB 216On August 8, Winema 216 in-

stalled their new board of directors. The ceremony was short but sweet, and the dinner of barbecued steaks, onions, dogs, corn on the cob, and salad made for a great meeting. Ar-chie Brown, R-93 came down from Eugene and brought four pies of various flavors. Strawberry-rhubarb, apple, and peach. Thanks Archie!

On September 8, our friends of Collier Park held their annual Loggers’ Breakfast. The breakfast

benefits the Collier State Park log-ging museum. Each year members of the Winema Hoo-Hoo club come to the park to cook the breakfast. This year, Chuck and Renie Ehlers, Denny and Kate Holl, Paul and Becky Wunder, Bob Anderson, Ron Loveness, Kirk Loveness, and Dick Miles manned the griddle and served the meal. It was a lot of fun and we served about 149 meals. Special thanks to Kari Tagan

for organizing and supervising the meal, and Terra Kemper for getting the park ready.

Later in September, we manned a station at the Klamath County sixth grade forestry tour. There were over 700 students, teachers and parents present for the two-day event. The purpose of our station was to ex-plain and show products produced from materials taken from the forests in Klamath County. Our club has participated in the forestry tour for over fifty years. In October, we held a Concat. We welcomed two new members into our club, Tom Keen and Mitchell Harrett. I’m proud to say our club still holds one meeting each month.

Now that things have settled down from the awesome Whistler convention, we can get down to making some of the ideas that came forward a reality. For those who attended, we had a great time. Remember to watch out for pigeons because unexpected things can happen…lol.

Elections were held on Oct. 3rd and once again we have a great team going forward for another year. It takes a lot of time and I’d like to thank all past and present

executive members for all their hard work over the years.

We held our Fall Social on Nov. 1st and it was very well attended. We introduced the new executive team to the members and talked about our fundraising efforts. Paul Beltgens gave a great talk on the history of the Hoo-Hoo to let

Winema board of directors BBQ.

people know how it all began.Jason Leroy was presented with

the Star of Hoo-Hoo for his work at refurbishing our portable BBQ. Thank you, Jason! Job very well done. We were excited to be able to use it at our Fall Social.

Our goals for this year are to work on getting more people interested in joining the Hoo-Hoo organization. We had three people sign up at the social which was a wonderful start. We’re also looking at improving our communications with existing members so they are better informed of all the things happening now and in the future.

I look forward to working with this great team and I’m learning many new things about Hoo-Hoo. Learning is always good.

J6– N. CASCADE CLUB 230We enjoyed a night of football

at our favorite watering hole in Everett near the waterfront. Apparently, it didn’t matter who won the game because most were too busy socializing. They also

came to hear the latest State of the Industry report during the half-time intermission.

The rain Gods held off again for our annual Turkey Trap shoot and it was a beautiful day for blasting clay pigeons in Granite Falls, WA. Some new shooters participated, and loaner guns were available for newbies as well as help and advice from the experts. The winners at the Trap Shoot event were: First Place went to Steve Kallicott, with a near perfect score of 45; Rick Yonke and David Hurlbut tied for Second; and Third Place went to Mark Edick! J6– BLACK BART CLUB 181Northern California had a great

turnout for our annual Concat for Black Bart 181. The event was successfully held at Cattlemans in Santa Rosa with 42 attendees, which included 7 new kittens. The ceremony was performed flawlessly with three past snarks which were in attendance. What luck!

Mr. Weaver from Redwood Empire was the guest speaker and did a great job informing us on the direction of the redwood market from a production standpoint. We look forward to providing the kittens with the best experience that Hoo-Hoo can provide!

J6– NW MONTANA CLUB 187Winter is settling in Northwest

Montana and the white stuff is starting to stick. Thanks to some hard work by our members and some gracious donation of building materials, the club has a nice place to socialize out of the elements during meetings. This last fall, work was completed on the club’s pavilion located at the Montana Logging Association. The stamped concrete floor was finished just in times before the cold weather started to set in. Besides some rock work, the pavilion is finished.

It should see good use, not only by the club, but by Montana Logging Association. The project has been a club goal for some time and it’s great to see it finished. May the winter season find you all well! Health, Happiness, and Long Life,Tim McEntire 101854Press Secretary

The Leschenaultia Hoo-Hoo Club may have a current membership of just 26, but the small-

and-mighty club is working diligently to educate its community about the importance of the forest products industry. The vibrant club, located in the southwest of Western Australia, has hosted several educational events in the last few months—and they’re making a difference.

October was a big month for the Leschenaultia Timber Industry Club (Leschenaultia Club 274) and members in Western Australia. This year’s Bull & Barrel country show on Oct. 12 was themed, “The Timber Industry–Now and Then.” The club presented a display and machinery demonstration promoting the industry in the region. The popular display left many locals wanting to chat about trees and timber.

The main attraction was the log handling demonstration by Jeff’s Plantation Logging Co., with a new CJD Forwarder provided by AGFRI Equipment. Member Jason Denham had his Lucas portable sawmill set up to demonstrate production of sawn timber. In addition, the club had gazebo’s set up with displays by FPC and a display of timber products provided by club member Greg Meachem and Wood Solutions.

Brad Barr organized to have Wespine pine logs and timber packs at the display, as well as pine tree seedlings as give-aways. Plenty of people dropped in to talk timber and the industry and to watch the demonstrations. Members Graham Wimsett, Greg Hodgson, Matt Granger, Paul Casagrande and Brian Barrett all gave their time to help.

Another successful event was the Forest Industries Teacher Tour on Oct. 14. The club took 39 schoolteachers from Parkfield Primary School on a full-day Forest Learning tour of plantations and native forest management practices, timber production at the Wespine Sawmill, and wood-chip export from Bunbury Port operations. Assisting along the way was a water resources officer from Harvey Water; a forest manager from the Forest Products Commission; an education officer from the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation & Attractions; a production management team from the Wespine Radiata Pine sawmill; and, at

the Bunbury Port, the CEO of wood-chip exporters, WA Plantation Resources.

Teachers were fully engaged and impressed with what they saw. They explained to club members how they now have a much greater appreciation of planting pine and Bluegums in water catchment areas, native forest management, timber production and residue, and wood-chip utilization.

Finally, Club 274 arranged a forest industry display and machinery demonstration at the Brunswick Agricultural Show. Brunswick Junction is about 30 kilometers east of Bunbury in southwest Western Australia. The exhibition included a working demonstration of a John Deere forwarder and harvester demonstrating log loading and processing.

The aim was to raise awareness of the forest products industry and showcase the technology, diversity and employment opportunities available. Government forest managers from the Forest Products Commission joined in to promote plantation and forest management practices. It’s safe to say Leschenaultia Club 274 finished off the year strong. The club will be kicking off 2020 with its first Forest Learning Teacher Tour in January,

A View from the Top

A long time ago, in a forest far, far away, six men came together to form a lumberman’s

association with a twist! The year was 1892 and the founders called their club The International Order of Hoo-Hoo. 127 years later, the club not only survives, it thrives! With membership in jurisdictions around the world, men and women of Hoo-Hoo continue to carry on the traditions that were laid out in Gurdon, AR., many years ago.

Evidence of the everlasting spirit of Hoo-Hoo was presented at the International Convention in Whistler. Every year, on (or about) the ninth day of the ninth month, an international gathering celebrates the spirit of Hoo-Hoo. We, the 48th Hoo-Hoo Club of Jurisdiction V, were honored to have the opportunity to host the event in the beautiful Village of Whistler, in British Columbia, Canada.

On September 10 at the Whistler Westin Resort and Spa, registration opened to the almost one hundred registered delegates. The event consisted of board

meetings, business meetings, awards and presentations. The event co-chairs, Stirling Angus and Christina

Rupp were gracious hosts, ensuring that the needs of every member were met. The Club 48 board put together a dynamic program that included a Guided Electric Bike Adventure Tour of the Whistler Valley. We were impressed at the fortitude of our members

who came back from this event soaking wet but enthusiastically excited about the beauty of the rain forests of B.C.’s coastal mountains!

For those looking for something a little more laid-back, we also arranged a day at the Scandinave Spa Whistler. A traditional Scandinavian bath experience in a rustic outdoor setting nestled on the edge of the Lost Lake Park allowed everyone to enjoy a silent retreat under the canopy of towering spruce and cedar trees.

Aside from the awards, presentations and business meetings, members enjoyed two outdoor adventures that, despite the inclement weather, were loads of fun! Two buses took delegates on a tour to the Garibaldi Log Sort in Squamish, where local Hoo-Hoo members Bryan Shier and Tom Cole talked about the nuances of logging operations in coastal B.C.

There were a lot of questions and good discussion, in fact, Stirling had to drag people onto the bus for the second part of the journey. However, there were four people who didn’t get back on, and they were the lucky winners of the raffle tickets for a helicopter trip from Squamish to Evans Lake donated by Blackcomb Helicopters.

Evans Lake Forestry Camp for kids is the primary charity of interest for Club 48 and we were delighted

to show it off to event delegates. The rain held off long enough for a tour of the camp and the anticipated landing of the helicopter passengers! As the rain hit, everyone was safely under cover enjoying massive one-lb. steaks provided and expertly grilled by the Cowichan Valley Club #229. After dinner, Dean McDonald choreographed a lively auction to help support the Evans Lake programs.

The convention finale was the North Arm Farm dinner in Pemberton. This beautiful family-owned-and-operated farm caters delicious meals made with locally sourced foods. A 40-minute drive through a winding highway, Pemberton is nestled in a valley that is both beautiful and charming.

Even the rain couldn’t erase the vibrant colors of the farm’s gardens and fields. And the open sided barn was a magical venue for a dinner that didn’t take long to turn into a rousing dance party! It started with Robyn and Anna, but it wasn’t long until Jensen Grant and Jess Rioux had the dance floor packed! One thing Hoo-Hoos can take pride in is their enthusiasm!

We believe members went home with a renewed sense of connectivity—rekindling old friendships and making new. Thank you all for coming! We look forward to next year in Sacramento. Until then, we wish you Health, Happiness and Long Life!
