Students in any of Stetson’s undergraduate majors can prepare for admission to distinguished law schools around the country or to the University’s own College of Law with campuses in both Gulfport and Tampa, Florida. Stetson’s course-unit curriculum—in the tradition of the finest liberal arts colleges in the nation— allows for maximum flexibility and student choice. Pre-law students can tailor their studies to emphasize the reading, critical thinking, logical reasoning, writing, and persuasive speaking skills sought by law schools. The Pre- Law Advisory Committee works individually with students to help them select rigorous unit courses and to assist them in learning more about the law school admission process.

The Committee supports students as they undertake internships and leadership opportunities, prepare for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT), and complete the admission process for the law programs that best fit their interests. Pre-Law advisers also assist students in developing their application portfolios so that their qualifications are presented effectively to law school admissions committees.

Stetson University faculty encourage students interested in legal careers to take full advantage of the undergraduate program over four years. The 4+3 program allows students in any of our undergraduate majors to prepare for direct admission to the three-year JD program at the College of Law. To be eligible, students must complete a bachelor’s degree with at least 108 credits earned on the DeLand campus, present a cumulative grade point average of 3.2, and score at the 60th percentile or above on the LSAT. Thanks to the 4+3 program, Stetson now has a proud group of “Double-Hatters”—students who have earned both an undergraduate and a JD degree at Stetson.

Students with outstanding credentials upon entry to the University as undergraduates may be approved for early admission to the College of Law. To be eligible, students must have strong high school records, including at least a score of 1200 on the SAT.

The student must earn at least 96 undergraduate credits at Stetson, complete all requirements in general education and a major, establish a grade point average in the 85th percentile of the class after three years, and achieve a minimum score at the 80th percentile on the LSAT (a score of approximately 160).

Students who are approved by the Pre-Law Advisory Committee and who meet all other admission criteria are then considered for early admission to the College of Law. After successful completion of the first year at the College of Law, and the completion of 128 credits overall at the University, students receive their baccalaureate degrees. They are then on track to earn the JD degree in their sixth year of study. Students interested in this accelerated program must apply to the Pre-Law Advisory Committee no later than the end of their first undergraduate semester.

Pre-Law Advisory Committee

Prospective and current students are encouraged to contact the pre-law advisory committee members:

In 2009, every Stetson student who worked with the Pre-Law Committee received at least one acceptance from an ABA-accredited law school.

Stetson undergraduatesinterested in legal study benefit from the close collaboration between faculty in the undergraduate programs in the Arts & Sciences, Business, and Music and faculty at the College of Law. Two distinctive programs support a smooth transition from undergraduate study to legal study at Stetson’s College of Law.
