Gustar – to like “To be pleasing to” Teacher: In order to use the verb gustar, you must first put a gustar pronoun.
Gustar Pronouns Explanation Me Me is what you use if it is something that "I like".
Te Te, something that "you like".
Le Le, something that "he or she likes".
Nos Nos, something that we like.
Les Les, something that they like.
The verb gustar can only be conjugated in 2 forms
Conjugation Explanation Gusta if what follows is singular or an infinitive Gustan if what follows is plural
You look at the word that directly follows gustar to decide if you need to use gusta or gustan.
Examples/Ejemplos: English Spanish I like cheese. Me gusta el queso.
Teacher: First, we have to look and decide which pronoun we have to use. We are saying I, so we choose the pronoun me. Then, we are either going to write gusta or gustan. Because el queso is singular, we use gusta.
We like the cat and the dogs. Nos gusta el gato y los perros.
Teacher: Remember, look at the noun that directly follows gustar to decide whether we use gusta or gustan.
The first thing we have to do is decide which pronoun. Because it's we, we choose the pronoun nos. Then, we look at what follows. You would think because it's el gato y los perros and it's plural that you would use gustan. However, you look directly at what follows gustar to decide and it's el gato. Because el gato is singular, we choose gusta.
They like the books. Les gustan los libros.
Teacher: First, we choose les because it's they. Then, we decide is it gusta or gustan? We are talking about los libros, which is plural, so we choose gustan.
You like Juan. Te gusta Juan.
Teacher: We choose te because it's you. We choose gusta because what follows is singular.
Clarification: • If you want to clarify who the subject is, you must have a personal “a” • You can’t just write the subject. For example, you can't say, "Yo me gusta el gato”. That's
wrong. Stetleón Spanish Institute - All Rights Reserved

To say: English Spanish
I A mí
You A ti
Teacher: To say I, you have to start the sentence with "A mi".
To say you, you have to start the sentence with "A ti".
Examples/Ejemplos: English Spanish I like cheese. A mí me gusta queso.
Juan likes to sleep. A Juan le gusta dormir.
Teacher: Notice, we didn't just say "Juan le gusta", we said, "A Juan". We chose le because it's he likes. We chose gusta because what follows is an infinitive. Dormir is an infinitive.
My friend and I like the cat. A mí amiga y a mí nos gusta el gato.
Teacher: Notice, both of the subjects here have a personal a.
Encantar – to love
• To love – not as in a person…but to really like something. It's how we overuse the saying, love. I love that book. I love that movie. I love that type of food, it's my favorite. Encantar is to specify that type of love, not "I love my mom" or "I love my Dad.
• Encantar follows the same rules as gustar and we must have the gustar pronouns.
It can only be conjugated “Encanta” or “Encantan”
Examples/Ejemplos: English Spanish The students really like school. A los estudiantes les encanta la escuela.
Teacher: We have the personal a because we are clarifying. Then, it's they, so we choose the pronoun les. Encanta because what follows is singular.
We love the books. Nos encantan los libros.
Teacher: It’s “We”, so we chose the pronoun, nos. Ecantan, plural, because what follows is plural.
