Merit

• If you meet the minimum entry requirements, you are then considered in order of merit

• All eligible domestic applicants are in the same pool

So what is

merit?

Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre

OPs and QTAC Selection Ranks = Merit

QTAC Selection Ranks are numbers on a scale from 1 – 99 (highest). They are derived from QTAC and institution schedules.

Schedules are reviewed annually and can change.

This schedule compares 2014 OPs with QTAC selection ranks

QTAC Guide, p. 18

Qualifications that may be given a rank*

Formal qualifications

• Year 12 or equivalent studies

• Tertiary studies e.g. degree, associate degree, advanced diploma, diploma

• Completed AQF qualifications - Certificates III, IV, diploma, advanced diploma

• Preparatory and bridging courses e.g. Certificate IV in Adult Learning Preparation,

university bridging courses

* The rules of an institution determine whether it will accept these qualifications**Most universities will not accept these for current Year 12 students

Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre

Year 12 applicants may have…..

… a number of formal qualifications from school or a training provider

There are no time limits on qualifications when applying to QTAC.

QTAC assigns various QTAC Selection Ranks to some of these qualifications

The rules of the institution determine which score becomes the primary or first order rank (see QTAC Guide p. 20)

How is merit used in selecting applicants?

OP or

First Order Rank

OP + FPs + additional when

needed

or

FOR + Secondary Ranks

OP + ATAR

around 99% courses

around 1% courses

a very small number of courses use additional information e.g. Griffith medicine and dentistry

Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre

FPs and Secondary Ranks are rarely used

In 2015 Sem 1 only 15 of the 1,510 courses used FPs –about 1%

Select preferences carefully

As cut-offs can change from year to year, it is

important that you submit a range of courses on your QTAC application

Build in upgrading pathways or

alternative careers in case you do not receive your higher preferences

Your preferred order

Courses you really want, even if your chance of gaining entry is not certain.

Less competitive courses that provide another way to your chosen career or to an alternative career. They can be used to upgrade to your ‘ideal’ course.

Courses you are prepared to do if you miss out on all others. They should be courses that in the past have been easy to get into. They can help you upgrade.

Medicine & Dentistry Selection

Selection is very competitive

Additional Selection Methods are used:

• UQ: Academic merit + UMAT (Aggregate and then Section 1 score)

• GU: Academic merit + ATAR

• JCU: Application + Interview (Medicine) + Academic merit

• BU: Interview + UMAT + Academic merit – apply after Jan offer round

• UNE: Interview + UMAT + Academic merit - apply via UAC

Watch out for preferencing

• OP 1 may not be enough to gain entry in the major offer round

• Even OP 1 students can miss out on offers if all preferences are ‘Ideal’

Foot-in-the-door courses as upgrade pathways

Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre

Upgrading pathways through QTAC

• Less competitive degrees

• Consider several institutions, not just one

• Dual diploma/degree qualifications e.g. TAFE/uni; QIBT/Griffith

• Diplomas e.g. TAFE; private institutions

• Tertiary preparation pathways (e.g. University of the Sunshine Coast)

Ask institutions for recommendations of upgrade pathways

Queensland Tertiary Admissions Centre

QTAC Selection Ranks useful for upgrading

1 year of bachelor degree studies

• With a passing grade may give a rank of 93 (like OP 4 in 2014)

A completed advanced diploma

• With a passing grade may give a rank of 91 (like OP 5 in 2014)

A completed diploma
