INTRODUCTION TO CALIFORNIA DRIVERS ED

STEPS TO GETTING YOUR CALIFORNIA LICENSE (15.5 17.5 years old)

*Note: If you turn 17.5 after getting your permit, the licensing requirements for those who are

15.5 17.5 years old no longer apply to you. You can simply meet the licensing requirements

for those who are 17.5 18 years old. The biggest difference between the two age groups is

that you don’t need to complete the behindthewheel driving hours if you are 17.5 18 years

old. Instead, you can practice driving and take your driving test as soon as you turn 18 years old.

Step 2: Get Your California Permit

Head to the DMV to ace your written test and get your permit! You’ll need to get at least 38 out

of 46 questions correct, and you have three chances to pass the test. If you fail, you must wait

seven days before taking the test again.

You’ll also need to provide a fingerprint and signature, pass a vision exam, and take a picture.

Make an appointment because the DMV doesn’t take walkins! You can also make an

appointment by using the DMV Now app or calling 18007770133.

Step 3: Do BehindtheWheel with California Drivers Ed

1. Take your first twohour lesson with a professional instructor, who will sign your permit.

You can't legally drive until you have your first behindthewheel lesson with a

professional instructor.

2. After your first twohour lesson with a professional instructor, you can start on the 50

hours of behindthewheel instruction (10 of which must be done at night) with a

parent, guardian, spouse, or adult who is 25 years old or older and has a valid California

driver license. The state of California doesn’t have any restrictions on what hours of the

day you can drive, but you should master most driving skills in daylight first.

3. You’ll need to complete two more 2hour lessons with a professional instructor (that’s

six hours total of professional instruction) before you can get your license.

Parents no longer need to keep logs for the 50 hours of behindthewheel practice. Instead,

parents now sign the second page of the student's permit (underneath the signature of the first

behindthewheel driving instructor) stating that the 50 hours of practice have been completed.

If you want, you can complete all or a portion of the 50 hours with a professional instructor.

Don’t forget, you aren’t allowed to drive alone just yet, and you should always have your

provisional permit with you!

Step 4: Get Your California License

Within 612 months of getting your permit, after completing all of the behindthewheel driving

instruction, and when you’re at least 16 years old, head to the DMV to take the driving test and

get your license!



If you fail your driving test, you must wait two weeks before you can take it again. You have

three chances to pass.

When you pass, the DMV will issue you an interim license that’s valid for 90 days. Your new

photo driver license will arrive in the mail. Until then, always have your interim license with you

when you drive.

In the meantime, you can’t transport passengers who are under the age of 20, and you can't

drive between 11pm and 5am. After you turn 18, these restrictions don't apply.

TESTS IN THE CALIFORNIA DRIVERS ED COURSE

California Drivers Ed Level Assessments

There are 10 levels in the course. At the end of each of the levels is a level assessment

consisting of 10 questions. The questions will be a mix of multiplechoice and true/false

questions. You must score at least 70% or better (at least 7 out of 10 questions correct) in order

to pass and go on to the next level.

If you fail a level assessment, you can take it again. There is no limit on how many times you can

take a level assessment and you don’t have to pay again to take a level assessment more than

once.

California Drivers Ed Final Exam

There will be a final exam at the very end of the course. It will have 50 questions, and you must

scores at least 70% or better (at least 35 out of 50 questions correct) in order to pass and

receive a Certificate of Completion from Aceable.

If you fail the final exam, you can take it again. There is no limit on how many times you can

take the exam and you don’t have to pay again to take it multiple times.

Passing this final exam proves to the state of California that you passed your drivers ed course. You'll

still have to take and pass a written knowledge exam at the DMV to get your permit.

California Drivers Ed Certificate Shipping Options

Your Certificate of Completion will be mailed to you when you finish the 30hour course (10

levels). Unfortunately, we aren’t allowed to email or fax certificates, and students can’t come

into the Aceable office to pick up certificates. We are required to mail out original hard copy

certificates using a thirdparty delivery service, such as the US Postal Service and FedEx.

The course comes with free standard shipping via the US Postal Service (USPS), and certificates

sent out using this option should arrive within 512 business days. Certificates are sent out of

our Concord, CA office, so the closer you are to that area the faster you’ll receive your

certificate.

If you want to upgrade to an expedited shipping option, you can purchase that option on the

web or app once you reach the very end of the course. Here are the prices:

preference in the course by 12pm (Noon) PST Monday through Friday. All certificate orders placed after these times will be processed the following business day, excluding national

The day that we ship out your certificate does not count as a business day. For example, if we

mailed your certificate out on Monday and you requested 2nd Day Shipping, your certificate

will arrive by Wednesday.

California Drivers Ed Permit – What to Bring to the DMV

To get your permit, you’ll need to take the written test at the DMV. You’ll need to get at least

38 out of 46 questions correct, and you have three chances to pass the test. If you fail, you

● An original and completed DL 44 (Driver License Application) with your parents’ or guardians’ signatures. You can get the DL 44 at your local DMV office or have it mailed

● Your social security number (you aren’t required to bring your social security card, but

you will need to know your social security number)

● An original or certified copy of a document verifying your birth date and legal presence

(US birth certificate, US passport, permanent or temporary resident card, etc.). Click

● Two (2) proofs of California residency (rental or lease agreement, deed or title to

residential property, mortgage bill, utility bills, school documents, medical documents,

employment documents, etc.). Click here for a full list of acceptable documents. The

address on the residency documents must match the residency address on the DL44

application. Photocopies are acceptable.

○ Parents, legal guardians, or children can use a birth certificate and spouses or

domestic partners can use a marriage license or domestic partner registration

certificate to trace their relationship to the individual named in the two

acceptable residency documents.

● $33 application fee. This fee is good for three exams within the 12month period and

pays for both your permit and driver license. If you don’t obtain your license within the

12month period you must go through the application process again.

What is AB 60?

Beginning on January 1, 2015, the state of California started making permits and licenses

available to all California residents, regardless of their immigration status. California residents

without a social security number or proof of legal presence can apply for an AB 60 Permit or

Driver License, which comes with the same privileges as a Basic Class C Driver License.

Instead of providing a social security number and proof of legal presence, applicants for an AB

60 Permit or Driver License must provide satisfactory proof of identity (California ID, Mexican

Passport, Guatemala Passport, etc.) and California residency (lease, utility bill, school record, etc.).

Applicants for an AB 60 Permit or Driver License must also submit all other required paperwork

and documents to the DMV.*

Like an applicant for a Basic Class C Driver License, an applicant for an AB 60 Driver License also

needs to present a DL 44 (Driver License Application) at the DMV. To have a DL 44 mailed to

you, call DMV's Automated Telephone Service at 18007770133 (available 24 hours a day, 7

days per week). You can also visit your local DMV office to pick one up.

● If you were previously issued a social security number, enter it on the DL 44 form.

● If you were never issued a social security number, check the box on the application

indicating this.

● Don't use a false social security number or one that wasn't issued to you by the Social

Security Administration.

● Do not complete the voter registration form if you aren't a U.S. citizen.

State Recognition of AB 60 Permits & Licenses

All AB 60 Permits and Licenses are recognized as valid by the state of California. Every AB 60

Permit and License will have a visible distinguishing feature on the front that reads "Federal

Limits Apply." On the back, it will note "Not Acceptable for Official Federal Purposes."

Please note that the law prohibits the state, local officials or agents, and any program that

receives state funds from discriminating against you because you hold or present an AB 60

Permit or License. Your AB 60 Permit or License should be accepted by state and local law

Secondary Review

Secondary Review occurs when the DMV needs to further investigate your documents or your

record. It's designed to ensure that all eligible Californians are able to obtain a permit or

license, regardless of their immigration status.

Your application for an AB 60 Permit or License will be on hold and you can't take your driving

test until you complete the Secondary Review process. However, you should be able to take

your written test. The DMV employee should explain why you're being referred to Secondary

Review.

Reasons you may be referred to Secondary Review include:

● You previously submitted an invalid SSN or there was a mismatch with a previous DMV

record

● The identity documents you provided aren't on the list of approved documents and

must be further verified by the DMV

● Any of the documents you've provided are perceived as potentially fraudulent

● You've received a ticket from law enforcement in the past while driving (whether or not

you gave your true name).

You can access the Secondary Review Application here. To schedule a Secondary Review

appointment, call 8554211001. Wait times may vary, depending on call volume. You'll receive

an appointment confirmation letter by mail.

You'll have another opportunity to prove your identity and California residency using a wider

variety of documents, and you'll be required to attend an extra appointment with a DMV at a

different office than the field office you originally visited. Secondary Review is conducted by

staff members of the DMV's Investigations Division, who will review your identity and residency

documents. Your interview make take up to one hour.

JUNIOR PERMIT/LICENSE

If you are over 14 and under 18, you may apply for a Junior Permit (also known as a Junior

License) if one of the following circumstances exists:

● If a family member who usually drives you is ill and taking a bus (or other

transportation) isn’t an option. You’ll need your application signed by your family

member’s doctor, stating what the illness is and approximately when the family

member is likely to recover and be able to drive again.

● If getting to school and school activities via bus or other means is inadequate. You’ll

need your school principal to sign your application, verifying the facts. You will only be

able to drive from your home to school and back.

● If you work and getting to and from work via bus is inadequate, AND your income is

essential in the support of your family. Your employer will have to sign your application

and verify the distance between your home and work, and the distance from your

employment to public transportation.

● If you work for your family in a family business enterprise and it’s essential that you

drive, then you’ll need your parents to write and sign a statement saying this on your

application.

It’s not easy getting approval from the DMV for a Junior Permit/License, as they will want you

to explain why carpools, taxis, bicycles, or walking won’t work for you.

Within six months of being issued a Junior Permit, you will also have to show that you have

completed your drivers education (online with Aceable) and your behindthewheel driver’s

training (the six hours of professional instruction) or your Junior Permit will be cancelled.

Your Junior Permit will be valid for six months, or until it’s no longer necessary for you to drive a

vehicle. If you move to another address, your Junior Permit may no longer be valid, so check on

this. If you’ve violated any of the provisions, then your Junior Permit will be cancelled or

revoked.

OUTOFSTATE PERMITS AND LICENSES

OutofState Permit

As a minor with a permit from another state, you'll need to meet all California permit

application requirements. It means you'll have to:

● Be at least 15.5 years old but younger than 18 years old

● Complete the DL 44 (Driver License Application) and have your parents sign it ● Pass the written knowledge test on Traffic Laws and Signs at the DMV

● Present your social security number, as well as a document verifying your birthdate and legal presence

● Pay the $33 application fee

● Present a DL 33 Form (To Secondary Schools Other Than California Schools). You can get

the DL 33 at your local DMV or by calling 18007770133. Send the DL 33 to your outofstate drivers ed school and ask them to complete and return it to you.

OutofState License

As a minor with a driver license from another state, you'll need to present your outofstate

driver license to the DMV and pass a knowledge exam as part of the application process. The

behindthewheel test is usually waived for a person with an outofstate driver license, but the

DMV may require a behindthewheel driving test for any type of driver license application.

As a minor, you will also be subject to provisional restrictions per California law. For example,

licensed teens in California can’t transport passengers under the age of 20 and can’t drive

between 11pm and 5am. After you turn 18, these restrictions don’t apply.
