Ouseburn, the cultural gem of Newcastle. Singing with the bustle of creative’s producing their latest piece of Art. Every building is unique, in its beauty and history. Every other building, an artist’s studio space. Nestled amongst this vibrant nucleus that oozes inspiration, lies Stepney Yard student accommodation. The beautiful, modern, building sits a matter of meters from a quirky, little, independent Pizzeria, whose owner is as welcoming and funky as the burnt orange and queasy purple structure. This funky, welcoming vibe extends throughout the area. Pass under the grand train bridge, where vintage cars attract your attention and you’ll find an inviting yard where an antique shop, guarded by a gentle boarder collie, and a shipping containter converted into an American diner coexist. With its cutting edge technology, dynamic storage and versatile communal spaces, Stepney Yard is highly sought after. The community spirit is impossible to avoid. From the friendly staff at reception who smile and wave as you stroll past, to the satisfied tenants who go about their daily activities in harmony. The arrangement of three, sleek forms that make up the thirty-two homely apartments creates a well-kept, communal courtyard, with circuitous balconies on each floor that lend themselves to the ‘chit-chat’ between neighbours passing by. If your spacious, ergonomic room faces North East, your window will frame the beaming children learning how to ride horses in the manège of The Ouseburn Riding School. Which is surrounded by luscious greenery and an unassuming cycle path. Let the rumble of the trains in the distance rock you to sleep at night and the abundance of birds chirping in the blossom trees nearby wake you from your peaceful slumber in your brand new, plush double bed. On a clear day, if you open the door onto your romantic Juliet balcony, you can hear the melodies being rehearsed in the music studios, just across the valley. The view to the West is furnished by an abundance of carefully considered developments. Each one providing a unique student experience for your peers, living only a stone’s throw away. Every other building, an artist’s studio space. Nestled amongst this vibrant nucleus that oozes inspiration, lies Stepney Yard student accommodation. The unsympathetic, obnoxious building seems to bully the characterful, former schoolhouse to its left. Now, Tower Cafe; A pizzeria, soon to be knocked down to make way for more impersonal accommodation blocks. The pleasantries of a fine spring day in Ouseburn are tainted by an air of impending gentrified doom. This ‘trendy’ district has a misleading sense of safety. During the day happy families pass by, visiting the brightly coloured cafes and galleries. As the sun sets, the inevitable sets in; the sounds of a car window being smashed under the bridge, or a fire brigade, approaching to put out a bin fire. A half-hearted attempt to bring personality into the austere flats of Stepney Yard have left each room, with a doubious feature wall of varying degrees of offensiveness. The layout of the three, harsh apartment blocks means most residents shut themselves off from the outside world. Using their heavy plastic blinds to avoid invasions of privacy from neighbours that are forced past bedroom windows to get to their front door. A solemn feeling occurs when walking through the cold, lifeless, tarmac courtyard. If your pokey, sterile room faces South East, the light from the oversized billboard, that flickers between the missing persons of Newcastle may well flood in through your cheap, fragile windows, all the way to your sense of security. The East side of the complex rattles from the trains that fly past at an aggressive speed, no more than a 100ft from your head while you lay on your sweaty, plastic coated mattress, trying to sleep. Torn between cracking your window to circulate much needed fresh air into your stuffy, over-insulated room and peace, from the irregular bass pouring out of the bar across the road. A Tsunami of development swells in the west, on the cusp of crashing on to Newcastle’s precious cultural hub in the form of enormous, soulless structures, eager to strip the next student of their originality and finances.
