“It is clear that creativity runs out of Maywood Fine Arts like Niagara Falls.”

In 2020, against a backdrop of uncertainty, Maywood Fine Arts continued to invest –

with the wonderful generosity of individuals, companies and foundations – in the creative potential of young people, primarily students of color. You proved indispensable partners!

Together we ensured access to training in dance, visual and dramatic arts, and music where young people learn new skills, discover their own talents

and develop an expanded worldview.

A remarkable measure of the impact of your investment in Maywood Fine Arts is the fact that MFA weathered this difficult period, learned new things along the way, and kept the focus on the health, safety and positive development of the students. The opportunity to grow and thrive through the arts cannot be taken for granted –

and this year MFA’s students, teachers, staff and board of directors are both joyful and humbled

that we came through it together with your support. We look forward to our

continuing partnership!

Unprecedented. Unexpected. What a year!

Immediately following the state-wide shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic in March 2020, our core leadership sprang into action to sustain the connection with our students and families.

- We immediately contacted parents and created arts education videos that were posted on our website.- By April 2020, all of our classes and individual lessons were available to students at no cost via Zoom. - Beginning June 15, 2020, under Phase 3 statewide guidelines, we opened a small summer program onsite, focusing on dance, tumbling, music and drama. - We also included online options for students as we experimented with offering hybrid models that provide flexibility for students to participate in class or online. - The onsite classes followed safe protocols for social distancing and wearing masks. - In dance classes, iPads positioned on studio walls allowed online students to view the class and participate at home.

As we adapted to the uncertainty presented by COVID, teaching staff quickly discovered a variety of creative and exciting solutions. For example, to allow for small class sizes as required by state guidelines, MFA assembled "pods" of 10 students,

Page 6: Step Into Action

who, as a group, took a series of dance classes in ballet, tap and jazz. These "pods" allowed students to remain with a core group rather than moving into a class of new students in each discipline.

Presenting student work to parents and public audiences plays a key role in how children learn and participate in the arts. MFA student performances, recitals, and exhibitions of their work are the highlight of each school year. Due to the stay-at-home order, all 2020 spring performances were canceled. MFA envisioned new ways of sharing students work online.

- While still in lock down, and through remote, online offerings, MFA's dance teachers taught special dances for Mother's and Father's Days and had parents record themselves and their children dancing together.- We then created special videos to be shared on Facebook and YouTube. - This online sharing experience expanded during the summer to include onsite filming of dancers, musicians and actors for summer recitals.- This has expanded in the new school year (2021)to include films made for such events as the Pumpkin Patch Parade and Classical Ballet for New Audiences.

Stepping Into the Future!

In the summer of 2020, MFA’s board and leadership staff came together to revisit our Strategic Plan. Tumultuous events the past year put the plan in a new light.

We rededicated ourselves to “expanding our students’ imagination and worldview through quality, affordable arts and fitness education.” This vision guides us with urgency, specificity and in ways that will move MFA forward as a more effective, compassionate and sustainable organization.

Highlights for our continuing work:

Artistic- Create pathways to identify ‘lead’ artistic teachers and partners in all program areas including music, tumbling and visual arts. - Grow artistic partnerships with guest artists and other organizations.- Strengthen curriculum by creating practical evaluation systems of all programs.

Community- Play an anchoring role in lifting up our community by building partnerships within

Page 9: Step Into Action

and across the wider geographic area and seeking a greater understanding of who we serve.

Organizational Capacity- Maintain strong leadership of board and staff by centering professional development, cross-training and diversity. - Strengthen MFA’s overall financial sustainability with improved management systems, fundraising capacity and stewardship practices.

The presence of art and fitness opportunities for young people of color and those from lower income communities cannot be taken for granted. We hope you take pride in how MFA persevered in 2020.

Soon, we look forward to welcoming all of you back to the studios. Nothing brings joy and satisfaction like seeing your support put to work when watching the students in class and in performances! We look forward to hosting you before too long.

And thank you for your interest and support of Maywood Fine Arts.
