Once you have received and recorded the stock, you will need to determine whether it is to be stored or placed on the shop floor. When stock is stored it needs to be stored safely and securely to reduce shrinkage and stock loss.

Each store will have its own specific policies and procedures of storing stock.

The manner in which the stock is to be stored will depend on the type of stock.

Regardless of the type of product, some procedures should always be followed:- the good should be moved to storage areas

promptly- WHS issues need to be considered, including the

use of PPE- items should be handled to ensure no damage

occurs- the goods should be stored to remain easily

accessible for staff

Some items will have special requirements for how they are to be stored. The storage of valuable goods will also need to be addressed.

There are also strict codes of practice for storing items such as food and dangerous goods.

Dangerous or hazardous goods must be stored according to industry guidelines, meaning that:- they should be in a locked, well lit and well

ventilated room- they should be stored at the correct temperature- they are clearly labelled- containers have tight fittings to prevent spillage- the MSDS and HAZCHEM is to be followed
