Gearphun Junior Chains - Chapter 3 - Activity 1

Lesson StructureIntroduction:

● Explain that the pupils will be building with some Morphun bricks following a set of instructions (provide only steps 1-5 to each table).

● Have a pre-built example of Model 3A to show the pupils what the end result will look like (step 5).

Learning Intentions:

● To explore the basic physics of movement and rotation (including the effects of friction, creating power), and how simple machines need and use gears.

● To start to learn the key vocabulary.

Activity Sheet 1 ● In groups, give the pupils a few minutes to start building their

model following steps 1-5.

● Get the pupils to spin the gears and notice that because the teeth are not meshed (they do not fit together), one gear does not turn the other.

1. Question: How can we make the gear on the left turn the gear on the right?

● Have the pupils move the gears closer together so that they mesh.

2. Question: When we turn the gear on the left, does the gear on the right turn the same direction, or a different direction?

3. When we turn the left gear clockwise what direction does the gear on the right turn?

● Keep the models that pupils have built for the next session.

Plenary:Storehouse Sheet - At the end of this lesson have thepupils fill out the sheet noting down how many of eachpart was used.

Differentiation -

Easy - How many of each were used.

Medium - How many of each were used plus naming the brick pieces used.

Hard - How many of each were used, naming the brick pieces and matching up the bottom box (Joiners, Axles...).

1. Question: What if we want to make both large gears move in the same direction, without using a third gear?

● Introduce pupils to the chain pieces. Have them join the pieces together into a long chain. Let them experiment with making longer and shorter chains, while they get used to connecting and disconnecting these pieces.

● Have pupils swap one of the gears for a smaller one.

2. Question: How can you fix the chain?

● Let pupils experiment with different sized gears, making sure everyone in the group has an opportunity to add/remove at least one gear. They will need to make their chains longer or shorter to fit each gear.
