ANSWERS: Answer options on the board for pupils to choose from. Get one child to demonstrate (The teacher may cover this when making copies).

1. They could be moved closer together, use bigger gears, or use more than two gears.

2. A different direction.

3. Anti-clockwise because meshed gears always turn in opposite directions.

Storehouse Sheet

Activity Sheet 1 ● In groups, give the pupils a few minutes to start building their

model following steps 1-5.

● Get the pupils to spin the gears and notice that because the teeth are not meshed (they do not fit together), one gear does not turn the other.

1. Question: How can we make the gear on the left turn the gear on the right?

● Have the pupils move the gears closer together so that they mesh.

2. Question: When we turn the gear on the left, does the gear on the right turn the same direction, or a different direction?

3. When we turn the left gear clockwise what direction does the gear on the right turn?

● Keep the models that pupils have built for the next session.

Plenary:Storehouse Sheet - At the end of this lesson have thepupils fill out the sheet noting down how many of eachpart was used.

Differentiation -

Easy - How many of each were used.

Medium - How many of each were used plus naming the brick pieces used.

Hard - How many of each were used, naming the brick pieces and matching up the bottom box (Joiners, Axles...).

Gearphun Chain Model 3A build to step 5

Change position of axel for red gear wheel.

Position gear wheels closer together.

Free play: Let pupils experiment with the remaining blocks in the set.

1. All turn in the same direction, i.e. clockwise, except for the gear on the outside of the chain.2. All turn in the same direction, i.e. anticlockwise, except for the gear on the outside of the chain.3. Both small gears on the outside of the chain turn in the opposite direction to the large gears on

the inside of the chain, i.e. anticlockwise.4. Clockwise.5. Both small gears on the outside of the chain turn in the

opposite direction to the large gears on the inside of the chain, i.e. anticlockwise.

5. Clockwise.

Free play: Let pupils experiment with their model, encouraging them to continue moving the chain to see what effect this has on the direction the gears turn.

Ask the pupils to fill out the ‘Plenary’ exercise shownon Page 2. Section E- Identify and Name the Pieces (2)

Activity Sheet 10● Have pupils move the chain to the inside of one of the small gears.

They will need to remove the small gear first and shorten the chain.

1. Question: What direction do the gears turn when you turn the handle clockwise?

2. Question: What direction do the gears turn when you turn the handle anticlockwise?

● Have pupils move the chain to the inside of the other small gear, as shown in step 8 (back sheet, bottom).

3. Question: What direction do you think the other small gear will turn now, when you turn the handle clockwise? Let pupils try this out.

4. Question: What direction do the small gears turn when you turn the handle anticlockwise?

● Have pupils move the chain so that the small gears are now on the inside, and the large gears are on the outside of the chain. They will need to remove the gears first and shorten the chain.

5. Question: What direction do you think the small gears will turn when you turn the handle clockwise?

6. Question: What direction do the small gears turn when you turn the handle anticlockwise?

Area of Learning: STEM Duration: 30 minutes
