How to help robbery victimsAre youwondering how to help a houserobbery victim who is struggling tocope emotionally or are you having dif-ficulty understanding the change intheir emotions?Henning Jacobs, trauma support coordi-

nator at ER24, said the best thing to do isbe there as a means of support and helpwith their needs as best you can.“House robbery is by far the most com-

mon traumatic incident people face inSouth Africa, especially in Gauteng. As atrauma counselling team, about 50% of thecalls we attend to each month are houserobberies.”Explaining the emotions victims of a

house robbery experience, Jacobs said:“They feel violated. A home is a placewhere you should feel safe. People whohave been robbedwhile in their homes feeltheir personal space has been invaded.“The trauma usually hits people the

hardest the next day. People usually onlythen start to realise what really happenedand what could have happened.“Feelings then come in phases of anger,

fear, frustration, hopelessness and irrita-tion. People are unique and can experiencethese emotions in different forms and pha-ses. Feelings need to be dealt with.”When counsellors arrive on scene, vic-

tims are debriefed and they help the vic-tims organise their immediate situationand put measures in place to help themcope.“People are usually not counselled on

scene due to thembeing in such shock. Vic-timson scenehavenot really come to termswith what has happened yet.“They are grateful for any help they re-

ceive. They are almost totally dependenton others to help them at the time. In theo-ry, people have to be counselled 72 hoursafter a house robbery.”Counsellors are then able to assess the

extent of the trauma experienced by thevictim to help them appropriately.

He added that victims of house robberiesnever forget the incident.However, with coping skills, they learn

how to deal with their emotions and it be-comes easier as time goes by.After any kind of trauma, people go into

shock and this causes difficulty sleepingand concentrating for at least a week afterthe incident. Their mood can also change.“Some people want to be alone after a

house robbery while others do not. It de-pends on the person’s personality.“People also becomeparanoid. Theyusu-

ally immediately upgrade their security.Victims start hearing noises at night andmake suremultiple times that all the doorsand gates are locked.”“They also usually blame themselves

and believe they should have done some-thing to prevent the incident.“We work hard to make sure people do

not blame themselves. It is not their fault.They need to understand that a robbery isthe robber’s choice and not theirs.“Family life is affected due to the emo-

tions victims experience. You might findthat family members fight with each otherdue to the shock. Itmay however also drawfamily members closer. They start to ap-preciate each other more. Plankenbrug River receives lifeline fromStellenbosch residentsResidents of Stellenbosch recently gathered to raiseawareness around the importance of rivers andwet-lands in a well-supported river clean-up day alongthe banks of the Plankenbrug River. Municipalworkers,96schoolchildrenandstaff fromlocalbusi-nesses in the area joined Wildlands for a water-themed Citizen Day.

Wildlands focuses on the creation of “green jobs” forlong-term environmental sustainability. The nationalLandUse Incentives (LUI)programme, fundedby theDe-partment of Environmental Affairs (DEA) employsteamsofpeopleacross thecountry to removealienplantsand plant millions of indigenous trees along sites likethe Plankenbrug River catchment.

The event introduced learners and teachers of theneighbouring Kayamandi Secondary School to what theWildlands teamwasdoing torestore theriver, alongwithnumerous donors and stakeholders including the Wild-lands Spier team, Cape Nature, Department of Water Af-fairs and Sanitation, DWA Resource Protection, Distell,Stellenbosch River Collaborative, municipal officials,the Million Trees Project, Living Lands and WWF.

Inkeepingwith theWildlandsuBuntuEarthAmbassa-dors’ philosophy, Lydia Willems urged the attendees to“be the change they wanted to see,” as more can beachieved when people work together.

Teams were grouped into five and allocated sectionsof the river to clean with the guidance of LUI team andsupervisorsThandokaziDaweti andVernonGqabaza for

safety purposes. A water quality dem-onstrationwasalso conductedbymem-bers of the Department of Water Af-fairs.

“We raised awareness by invitingmembersof theindustrytoseetheworkwearedoinghere,and thestakeholdersofupperEersteRivergot to seehowbadthe Plankenbrug River is, which flowsinto the Eerste River further down”,said Willems. “All are committed tocontinue their support of Wildlands ef-forts”, she said.

Councillor Pietman Retief, responsi-ble for greening and beautification inthe Stellenbosch area, said: “We aresupporting this initiative through oneof our partners in the Million TreesProject - Wildlands, and will continueto support efforts to plant trees andclean up the rivers”.

Simone Dale, deputy-director uBun-tu Earth at Wildlands said: “This Citi-zen Day is exactly what our uBuntuEarth Ambassadors initiative is striv-ing for. All spheres of a communitycoming together to create lastingchange. It starts with us. We’d like tothankourdonorsRandMerchantBankfor their belief in this work”.

Disability network plans to have agreater impact this yearThe second StellenboschDisability Network (SDN)meeting was held recently.The Helderberg Associa-tion for Persons with Disa-bilities (HAPD) facilitatedthe meeting in the foyer ofthe Stellenbosch TownHall.

Topics of discussion in-cluded local issues pertain-ing to the disability field, aStellenbosch MunicipalityDisability Policy draft, andcollaborative ways to raiseawareness of disability inand around Stellenbosch.

Twenty-five membersconsisting of representa-tivesof localandprovincialgovernment, StellenboschUniversity,non-profitsandindividuals working withpersons with disabilities,as well as persons livingwith a disability joined thesession.

The network plans to get busi-nesses, educational institutions

and the public to “talk about disa-bility” in 2015. Topics such as ac-cessibility, education, employ-

ment and community develop-ment will take center stage in thisdisability awareness campaign.

Any business owner would like to achievethe best possible results in his orher business. Therefore it can beunderstood that business owners,when recruiting staff, will be onthe lookout for themost competentpeople to employ. The better thequality of work employees can de-liver, the better for the company.Unfortunately we often place all

the emphasis on competence only,without considering a prospectiveemployee’s character. Employeesmay be very good in executingtheir jobs, but if they lack goodcharacter, forinstancetheyarestealingorarefrequently absent, it can be to the detrimentof the organisation.Competence and character are like the two

wheels of a bicycle. They are equally impor-tant and the same attention should be givento character and to competence. Employeesare often appointed for competence and laterneed to be let go because of character-relatedfailures. Competent employees with poorcharacter qualities make for an organisationthat resembles a penny farthing bicycle withone big wheel and one small one.Character refers to the qualities built into

an individual’s life that determine his or herresponse,regardlessofcircumstances.There-

fore, good character basically means “doingthe right thing when nobody is looking.”Lack of character in an organisation is evi-

denced by negligence, low produc-tivity, quality problems, workershaving their own agendas, etc. Ifsuch problems have a negative in-fluence in your company it is nec-essary to implement a strategy todevelop good character.First it is necessary to not only

emphasise performance output,but also values and character qual-ities that will be acceptable in thecompany. Trainmanagers and em-ployees to establish a culture ofgood character.

Secondly, enforce principle-based policiesto establish an organisational culture that isbuiltongoodcharacter.Promote theseprinci-ples through every communication with em-ployees andmakegood character an essentialduring the hiring process.And finally, give recognition for good char-

acter and not only for reaching performancetargets. Only a couple of employees usuallyreceive recognition for delivering outstand-ingoutput,butmostof themcanberecognisedfor some good character qualities e.g. alert-ness, loyalty, punctuality, etc. (Source: Char-acter First)

This is an extension ofthe Nedbank Cape Winemakers Guild Trust, which launched the3-year Protégé Programme in 2006, with the aim of empoweringtalented young winemakers to reach master status. As itstands, the bursary programme works to the benefit of three(3) Western Cape and one (1) Gauteng Elsenburg AgriculturalCollege students.

Husband and wife duo win CapeTown Cycle Tour MTB ChallengeThey punched the air, bumped fists andgrinned – sometimes all at the same time– as they completed their ride and collect-ed their medals on Sunday 2 March bring-ing the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s weekendof mountain biking to an end.

About 3 500 cyclists competed in the CapeTown Cycle Tour MTB Challenge at Le Bon-heur Wine Estate in Stellenbosch, whichwere held over two days.Cyclists riding the 38 km and 55 km routes

were treated to a feast of breathtakingscenery in the Greater Simonsberg Conserv-ancy in Stellenbosch as they carved up singletrack and devoured gnarly descents.“Itwashot and sandy,” saidCraigMcKune.

“No, itwas sandy andhot,” argued Steve Pikein the chill zone. They were both right.Riders battled soft sand and temperatures

approaching 30°C.They also had to contend with sharp, steep

climbs and wind, but were rewarded withmagnificent views, shady and fast foresttrails and someof the country’s finest conges-tion-free single track.The riders agreed that the MTB challenge,

which is in its 14thyear, getsbetter eachyear.A day earlier, Herman Lazarus celebrated

a personal achievement after completing the22 km mountain bike ride.In 2014 Lazarus was approaching mid-life

as an unfit smoker. He decided to embark ona mission to become healthy.His first step was to stop smoking, which

he did successfully. And then, with the helpof his companyLiebenLogistics, which spon-sored kit and bikes to their employees thisyear, he started cycling. He completed the22 km on Saturday with colleagues ridingalongside him in support.The long MTB Challenge routes, which

were designed and built by route coordina-tor,MeurantBotha ofDirtopia, saw the intro-duction of new scenic and shady areas for rid-ers, as well as an increased amount of singletrack – the most in the history of the event.“Feedback about the route has been posi-

tive – the top riders described it as a crosscountry route with lots of variety,” saidBotha, who started building the trail in No-vember.“We’ve had 24 guys on the go for the last

two months, cutting the route by hand.”Botha’s plan is, with the help of the local

farmers in the Greater Simonsberg Conserv-ancy, to make the mountain a mountain bik-ing mecca.Meanwhile, Erik and Ariane Kleinhans

showedwhy they are amountain bikingmar-riagemachine.Thecouple,whoride forTeamRECM,won the 55 kmrace in their respectivecategories.The line-up included top localpro-fessional riders and multiple World Champi-on andOlympicmedallist, Christoph Sauser.Team EAI’s Johann Rabie took second placewhile Team RECM’s Nico Bell secured the fi-nal podium spot.Winning in a record time of 02:12:54, Erik

was thrilled, saying his victory was evensweeter because Ariane had also won. He de-scribed the race as aggressive. “We (Erik andRabie) were leading from the beginning withbig guys chasing us, but we managed to stay

away for a long time.“Towards the end I got a small gap at the

last single track section which helped me tocome out in front. I’m super happy to takethe victory today.”Conquering over 1 350m of climbing, the

women’s event was a tough race betweenTeamRECMSwiss rider,ArianeandSwedishnational champion, Jennie Stenerhag (TeamAscendis).With nearly fiveminutes to spare,Ariane came out on top, finishing in 02:32:28.Team Velocity Sports Lab’s Carmen Bu-chacher from Austria took third place.Edward Boshoff was crowned the winner
