NEw ADVENTURES IN LIVE ELECTRONIC MUSIC AND BEyOND

New musical instruments from the last century — the Theremin, electric guitar, synthesizer, turntable — were outlandish, noisy, and often threatening to the conventional. But to the fresh ear these were instruments of pleasure and freedom that sparked creativity. From Edgar Varèse to Grandmaster Flash, new instruments were essential for the creation of new music. For 42 years, STEIM has helped artists realize dream instru-ments that would allow them to make music like no other. we think it’s time to showcase some of our new favorites.

The festival program will feature some of the newest and most adventurous approaches in today’s live electronic music. “wire-less controller for voice,” “Composition for sounding jug-gling balls,” “Graphite synthesizer,” “Joystick sampler,” and “Video choir” are some of the wonders that resulted after artistic residencies at STEIM. Other invited artists come with their own take on DIy synthesizers and controllers, live instru-mental hip-hop, heavy machine doom music, biofeedback, Tuvan singing, and boogie-woogie noise. Many of the performers and pieces will be seen in the Netherlands for the first time.

The symposium program brings together internationally renowned artists, writers, and scholars from diverse fields to discuss about new directions in music making. we revisit the pioneer-ing work of Steina Vasulka and the historical STEIM archives in “The New Past” session. Influential writers David Toop and Hans Boutellier talk about improvisation in the ”Playing by Ear” session. “Handmade Music” is an open demo session of odd and unique instruments built by local artists and students. Other themed sessions are joined by specialists in mathemat-ics, computer music, new media, musical healing, and com-plex systems. Our local collaborating partners and institu-tions will present their own work throughout the program.

we also have a workshop program ranging from building small touch synthesizers to drawing with handmade chaotic analog comput-ers and learning how to design networked interactive systems. Additionally, intimate seminars on interactive media education, archiving multimedia performances, working with field record-ings and new cross disciplinary collaborations will be organized. All workshops and seminars will be taught by experienced art-ists and researchers from our extended network of colleagues.

New musical instruments from the 21st century — the laptop, touch screen, mobile phone — are familiar devices that easily produce wild sounds and complex patterns. However, we should not forget that what grasps us during a performance is not the technology or its functionality; is still the sweat, the effort and the intui-tion of the performer. In the end, it is all about the music.

wat bizar en luidruchtig waren de nieuwe muziekinstrumenten uit de vorige eeuw: de Theremin, elektrische gitaar, synthesi-zer en draaitafel — een bedreiging van het alledaagse! Maar voor wie er oor voor had waren het instrumenten van plezier en vrij-heid die aanzetten tot creativiteit. Nieuwe instrumenten waren essentieel voor het ontstaan van nieuwe muziek, van Edgar Varèse tot Grandmaster Flash. 42 jaar lang heeft STEIM kunstenaars geholpen bij het maken van hun droominstrument waaruit ze als geen ander muziek zouden kunnen toveren. Tijdens het Patterns + Pleasure Festival presenteren we onze nieuwe favorieten.

Op het festival staat een aantal van de nieuwste en avontuurlijk-ste benaderingen van hedendaagse live elektronica. ‘wireless controller for voice’, ‘Composition for sounding juggling balls’, ‘Graphite synthesizer’, ‘Joystick sampler’, en ‘Video choir’, stuk voor stuk het wonderlijke resultaat van een van de STEIM kunst-residenties. Andere uitgenodigde kunstenaars brengen hun eigen DIy-synthesizers en -controllers, er is live instrumentale hip-hop, heavy machine doom music, biofeedback, Tuva-zang en boogie-woogie noise. Voor veel van de artiesten en stukken is het de eerste keer dat ze in Nederland te zien zijn.

Het symposiumprogramma omvat internationaal gerenommeerde kun-stenaars, schrijvers en onderzoekers afkomstig uit verschil-lende velden. Zij praten en discussiëren over de toekomst van de nieuwe muziek. In ‘The New Past’-sessie worden het pionierswerk van Steina Vasulka en de historische STEIM-archieven opnieuw onder de loep genomen. In de ‘Playing by Ear’-sessie praten invloedrijke auteurs als David Toop en Hans Boutellier over improvisatie. ‘Handmade Music’ is een open demo-sessie waar lokale kunstenaars en studenten hun zelfgebouwde instrumen-ten presenteren. De verschillende themasessies worden begeleid door specialisten op het gebied van wiskunde, computermuziek, nieuwe media, musical healing en complexe systemen. En tij-dens het hele programma zullen de partners en instituten waar-mee we op lokaal niveau samenwerken hun eigen werk laten zien.

Ook is er een uitgebreid workshopprogramma: alles van het bou-wen van kleine touch synthesizers tot het tekenen met handge-maakte computers en het ontwerpen van interactieve systemen. Ook zijn er intieme seminars over interactief mediaonderwijs, het archiveren van multimedia performances, het werken met field recordings en nieuwe interdisciplinaire samenwerkingen. Alle workshops en seminars worden gegeven door ervaren kunstenaars en onderzoekers afkomstig uit ons eigen, uitgebreide netwerk.

De laptop, touch screen, mobiele telefoon, de nieuwe muziek-instrumenten uit de huidige eeuw zijn ons welbekend. Eenvou-dig maken we er wilde geluiden en complexe patronen mee. Maar laten we niet vergeten dat wat ons tijdens een performance boeit niets te maken heeft met technologie of functionaliteit; het gaat nog steeds om het zweet, de inspanning en intuïtie van de performer. Uiteindelijk gaat het gewoon om de muziek.

FUyUKI yAMAKAwA [JP] 

“All-body musician” Fuyuki yamakawa is an award win-ning Tuvan singer and crea-tor of improvised sound/visual happenings. Tuvan sing-ing, lighting synced to his wired-up body, and occasional arrhythmia caused by vocal techniques fill and absorb the space creating a truly immer-sive audiovisual experience.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER [US]

In the hands of Tristan Shone, Author & Punisher is a com-plete industrial doom and drone metal band. Heavy drones and pounding rhythms are driven by his custom machines, fab-ricated to demand signifi-cant force to perform with.  

GROUND [BE/NL](JEROEN UyTTENDAELE & DEwI DE VREE)

Using graphite as both a score and conductor of elec-tricity, Ground creates a highly visual and tangible form of electronic music. Instead of turning knobs, their handmade synthesizer is played by drawing, touch-ing and moving objects.

TOKTEK [NL] VS SIMON BERZ [CH]

Live-sampling-beat-pilot tok-tek (Tom Verbruggen) battles it out with instrument builder & drummer Simon Berz in an energetic session. Over the years, toktek has mastered the art of sampling anything that makes sound, in order to play these sounds through his ‘flight simulation’ control-lers using STEIM’s software. Berz’s handmade drum synth system allows for him to play his electronics direct-ly through the drumkit.

FUyUKI yAMAKAwA [JP] 

‘All-body’ muzikant Fuyuki yamakawa is een gelauwerd Tuva-zanger en creëert ge-improviseerde beeld/geluid ervaringen. Tuva zang, belich-ting gesynchroniseerd met zijn op elektronica aangesloten lichaam en incidentele, door zijn stemtechniek veroorzaakte aritmie nemen de ruimte geheel in beslag en zorgen voor een audiovisuele totaalervaring.

AUTHOR & PUNISHER [US]

Onder leiding van Tristan Shone vormt Author & Punisher een volledige industriële doom en drone metal band. Zware drones en stampende ritmes worden opgezweept door zijn zelfge-bouwde machines, zo gemaakt dat er behoorlijk wat kracht voor nodig is om er mee op te treden. 

GROUND [BE/NL](JEROEN UyTTENDAELE [BE] & DEwI DE VREE [NL])

Door grafiet zowel als een partituur en als een elektri-citeitsgeleider te gebruiken creëert Ground een visuele en tastbare vorm van elektronische muziek. In plaats van aan knop-pen te draaien bespeel je hun handgemaakte synthesizer door erop te tekenen en voorwerpen aan te raken en te bewegen.

TOKTEK [NL] VS SIMON BERZ [CH]

In een energieke sessie gaat live-sampling-beat-pilot toktek (Tom Verbruggen) de strijd aan met instrumenten-bouwer en drummer Simon Berz. De afgelopen jaren heeft toktek zich toe gelegd om alles wat ook maar geluid maakt te samplen. Om het vervolgens af te spelen met zijn ‘flight simulation’ controllers en STEIM’s software programma’s. Met zijn handge-maakte drum synth-systeem kan Berz zijn elektronica direct door zijn drumkit afspelen.

JESSICA RyLAN [US] 

Jessica Rylan has performed around the world with her handmade synthesizers and intimate songs. Her version of personal noise presents an alternative to the habit of noise as relentless and loud. Her synth sounds are organic and creature-like, her sing-ing unnerving and distant. 

ALEx NOwITZ [DE]

Composer and voice virtuoso Alex Nowitz can capture and manipulate his voice on-the-fly with his highly person-alized instrument built at STEIM. By combining his grum-bling moans, bird chirps, and soprano singing with pre-recorded instrument samples in realtime, Nowitz literally “composes the now.” His per-formances are nothing but a spectacle to watch and hear. 

EDISON [US] 

Composing from a rich pal-ette, Edison creates lush, organic instrumental hip-hop. Live, his tracks are tapped out fluently piece by piece on a handmade lunchbox controller. Recently winning the west-coast Controllerism Battle, Edison bridges the gap between tight studio production and an engaging live performance.

NINA BOAS [NL]

Nina Boas invites her audience into a world where giants serve tea, drawings come to life and everyone and everything is part of a music video. Using familiar objects like a pen, paper, and scissors, her narra-tives delicately unfolds with little surprises and abrupt events happening on the way.

JESSICA RyLAN [US] 

Met haar handgemaakte syn-thesizers en intieme muziek heeft Jessica Rylan wereld-wijd opgetreden. Haar ver-sie van persoonlijke noise is een alternatief op het gebruikelijke meedogenloze geluidsniveau van noise. Haar synth-geluiden zijn orga-nisch en dierlijk, haar zang enerverend en afstandelijk.

ALEx NOwITZ [DE]

Met zijn speciaal op hem afge-stemde en in STEIM ontworpen instrument is componist en stemvirtuoos Alex Nowitz in staat zijn stem realtime te samplen en te manipuleren. Door een combinatie van grom-mend gekreun, vogelgetsjirp, sopraanstem en eerder opge-nomen instrumentale samples kan Nowitz letterlijk ‘het nu componeren’. Zijn perfor-mances zijn een puur spek-takel voor oog en oor. 

EDISON [US] 

De zwoele, organische hiphop van Edison is gecomponeerd uit veel verschillende elementen. Soepel haalt hij tijdens zijn live-optredens stuk voor stuk zijn tracks uit een handge-maakte lunchbox-controller. Edison won recentelijk de westcoast Controllerism Bat-tle en slaat een brug tus-sen strakke studioproductie en pakkende live optredens.

NINA BOAS [NL]

Nina Boas nodigt haar publiek uit in een wereld waar reu-zen thee serveren, tekenin-gen tot leven komen en alles en iedereen deel uitmaakt van een videoclip. Gebruikmakend van vertrouwde voorwerpen zoals een pen, papier en een schaar laat ze haar verhalen fijntjes ontvouwen, met alle kleine verrassingen en plotse gebeurtenissen van dien.

TOM JOHNSON [US] & GANDINI JUGGLING [UK] 

A world premiere of Tom John-son’s new composition for the Gandini Juggling company. Based on minimal tones and mathemati-cal algorithms executed through virtuosic juggling techniques, the piece evolves through com-plex musical structures. The juggling balls, each with its own built-in audio synth, were custom designed at STEIM for this piece by Byungjun Kwon.

TAKUMA wATANABE + HAIR STyLISTICS + TATSUHISA yAMAMOTO [JP] 

The European debut of a shocking collaboration between composer / pianist Takuma watanabe and Japanoise giant Hair Stylistics (Nakahara Masaya, ex-Violent Onsen Geisha), supported by Tokyo’s most eclectic drummer  Tatsuhisa yamamoto. High energy and totally unpredictable.

MOLDOVER [US]

Hailed as “Godfather of Controllerism” Moldover is a phenomenal musician that combines DIy instrument build-ing and DJ techniques into a solid live performance. Singing, playing guitar, and chopping up beats on his controller, Moldover’s presence reaches beyond one-man-band to rock star.

DJ SNIFF [NL]

dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) “plays the playback” through scratching, cutting and stuttering various records that reflect his influences from free improvisation to hip-hop. Uti-lizing custom built samplers, he can capture and playback sounds at lighting speed or lay-er them to build heavy drones. In any case, nothing is subtle.

TOM JOHNSON [US] & GANDINI JUGGLING [UK] 

wereldpremière van nieuw werk door Tom Johnson voor de Gandini Juggling groep. Het stuk, gebaseerd op minimale tonen en wiskundige algoritmes uitgevoerd door virtuoze jong-leertechnieken, ontwikkelt zich door complexe muzikale structuren. De jongleerballen, die elk een eigen ingebouwde audio synth hebben, zijn spe-ciaal voor dit werk bij STEIM ontworpen door Byungjun Kwon.

TAKUMA wATANABE + HAIR STyLISTICS + TATSUHISA yAMAMOTO [JP] 

Het Europese debuut van een schokkende samenwerking tussen componist-pianist Takuma watanabe en Japanoise leg-ende Hair Stylistics (Nakahara Masaya, ex-Violent Onsen Geisha),begeleid door Tatsuhisa yamamoto, de meest eclectische drummer van Tokio. Energiek en volledig onvoorspelbaar.

MOLDOVER [US]

Moldover, gelauwerd als ‘God-father of Controllerism’ is een fenomenale muzikant die DIy instrumentenbouw en dj-technieken combineert in een stevige live performance. Door zijn zang, gitaarspel en de verknipte beats uit zijn controller overstijgt Moldovers persoonlijkheid de eenmansband en neemt hij rockster-achtige vormen aan.

dj sniff (Takuro Mizuta Lippit) ‘plays the playback’ door verschillende platen die een afspiegeling vormen van zijn invloeden — van vrije improvisatie tot hiphop — te scratchen, cutten en te stot-teren. Door het gebruik van zelfgebouwde samplers is hij in staat de afspeelgeluiden vliegensvlug op te nemen of ze op te stapelen tot een zware drone. In ieder geval, sub-tiliteit is ver te zoeken.

STEINA VASULKA, SONIC ACTS, EN ANDEREN

Digitale archieven verande-ren de relatie tussen verle-den, heden en toekomst. wat is de betekenis daarvan voor de kunst-, muziek- en per-formance-praktijk, en voor STEIM — één van de oudste media-laboratoria ter wereld? Het symposiumprogramma zal worden geopend met het pionierswerk van videokunstenaar Steina Vasulka, gemaakt tijdens haar STEIM-residentie begin jaren negentig. Vasulka zal worden geïnterviewd door betrokkenen van het Sonic Acts Festival en er zal een discussie zijn over het verleden van de toekomst en de toekomst van het verleden.

JAMIE ALLEN, TACO STOLK, EN BART VAN DONGEN

waar krijgt muziek beteke-nis en met of in welke oude en nieuwe contexten kan er worden gespeeld? Context Matter behan-delt de nieuwe contexten voor muziek en performance. Hoe kan er worden gecomponeerd voor onconventionele plekken en hoe is het mogelijk nieuwe instrumenten te ontwerpen die ons begrip van tijd en vormen ombuigen? In deze discussie zal de veelzijdige kunstenaar en onderzoeker Jamie Allen worden bijgestaan door meta-disciplinaire kunstenaar- theoreticus Taco Stolk en Bart van Dongen, artistiek directeur van In Situ.

PENELOPE GOUK, GUERI-NO MAZZOLA, EN JOEL RyAN

Hoe is kennis mogelijk zonder te denken? Door middel van instru-menten zijn muzikanten in staat tijd en structuur direct en op een absoluut creatieve manier te verwerken. Historisch gezien had muzikale verwondering, gecombineerd met het mecenaat, een sleutelrol bij het ontstaan van nieuwe technologieën. Onder leiding van computermuziek-veteraan Joel Ryan zullen wiskundige en free jazz pianist Guerino Mazzola en Penelope Gouk, specialist op het gebied van musical healing en experi-mentele akoestiek, discussiëren over het binnenstebuiten keren van muziek en instrumenten.

Influential writer and musician David Toop is joined by Rutger Zuydervelt (a.k.a. Machinefabriek) and Gerco Hiddink talking about impro-visational listening modes and projects. STEIM director

Dick Rijken and Hans Boutel-lier launch the first of their experimental nterview series addressing the role of improvi-sation in musical and social contexts. This session will be hosted by STEIM artistic direc-tor Takuro Mizuta Lippit.

The rooms and spaces we inhabit are often just an ambient back-drop for our daily activities. How can we step into a dialogue with our environments and make their forms and patterns com-municate? How would these spaces behave? In this work-shop we will collaboratively

explore the potential of the spaces at Frascati theater as a reactive environment with an intelligence of its own. The result of our efforts will be the reinterpretation of the space into a large-scale interactive installation utilizing sound, touch, movement, and light. The technology we will be using is Sense-Stage, a hardware and software framework for creat-ing interactive environments and collaborative experiences.ADMISSION: € 45,–

Het leven in een netwerkmaat-schappij wordt gekarakteri-seerd door improvisatie. Daar is niets mis mee. we bekijken de betekenis van improvisa-tie voor de ontwikkeling van de muziekpraktijk, het ont-werpen van instrumenten en, wellicht, voor ons alledaagse leven. De invloedrijke schrij-ver en muzikant David Toop zal worden bijgestaan door Ruger Zuyder-velt (Machinefabriek) en Gerco Hiddink in een gesprek over geïmproviseerde manieren van luisteren en ontwerpen.

Dick Rijken, directeur van STEIM, en Hans Boutellier presenteren hun eerste ses-sie in een reeks van expe-rimentele interviews over improvisatie binnen muzikale en sociale contexten. De ses-sie zal worden geleid door Takuro Mizuta Lippit, artis-tiek directeur van STEIM.

This work-shop will take you through the basics of assembling a CrackleBoard synthesizer and exploring ways of extending its sound and function using various conductive materials, prefab and self-made sensors, and playing techniques. Chaos and noise. In the mod-ern usage these ideas could be considered synonymous. But chaos is not noise. True noise is random, with no relationship between what happened before and what we experience now. For noise time has no meaning.

Chaos is a process, an evolution with a clear direction. But the nature of chaos is so complex that it is almost impossible to understand intuitively, thus giving the illusion of being noise.
