Steen Schmidt, a recent Berklee College of Music graduate, is an American film, TV, and video game score composer and conductor. He is best known for his scores to the "Passage to Mars", co-produced between Jules Verne Adventures and NASA, a commercial for Häagen Dazs, as well as the Chinese martial arts film "Assassinating The Tiger”, directed by Xuegang Cai. He also composed a score for a television show pilot produced by Dan Harmon and NBC last January. Currently, Steen is exploring to find the next step in his film scoring career in Los Angeles. Steen’s musical journey began at a young age growing up in a very musical household. He listened to classical artists such as Wilhelm Furtwängler and Herbert Von Karajan, as well as film music composers like John Williams, Jerry Goldsmith, Bernard Herrmann, Danny Elfman, and many more. In addition to traditional Western music, Steen has also studied extensively on the music and instruments of the Far East, with particular emphasis on China and South Korea. He has traveled to China, Japan and South Korea numerous times, absorbing the rich culture and musical heritage of the region. He has also studied at South Korea’s Yonsei University in Seoul, composing for instruments as varied as Erhu, GaYaGeum, JangGu, Buk, Jing, Guzheng, and Koto. As an young academic musician, performing on viola and conducting for a decade in the Metropolitan Youth Symphony in Portland, Oregon and in concert halls in Europe and China, the musical education and level of commitment was possibly the most influential experiences of his career. Not only did Steen learn about orchestration and musicality from his time in the symphony, but also the value of teamwork, patience, and flexibility. Steen graduated from Berklee College of Music in Boston, USA and has studied privately with Hollywood Composer George S. Clinton. His education has provided him with all the knowledge and tools necessary to pursue a career in the film music industry. Before attending Berklee, Steen spent time at the music school of University of Oregon, which had a very conservatory style approach of learning. Film scoring, being his dream, did not have much exposure there. This was one of the reasons why he went east to Berklee. During school breaks from Berklee however, Steen traveled back to the University of Oregon and recorded an orchestra comprising of mostly his friends, exposing them to how a film scoring session is ran. Those experiences also gain further experience in working with an orchestra in the film scoring setting while receiving great academic practice at the same time. Steen’s long-time love for film and TV music, his formal education and his never-ending drive to explore all facets of music production has sent him to Los Angeles to pursue a career in the film and TV music industry. When he’s not composing music, Steen enjoys watching films, traveling around the world, and practicing flight simulations on a variety of aircraft. George S. ClintonChair of Film ScoringBerklee College of Music

To whom it may concern,

It is my pleasure to write this letter of recommendation for Steffen Schmidt. Not only is he one of the most talented young composers I have ever worked with, he is also highly motivated, takes care of business, and is a great guy.

I have been a film composer for over 32 years and recently became the Chair of Film Scoring at Berklee College of Music where I had the pleasure of being his Directed Study professor his senior year at Berklee. The Film Scoring major is extremely demanding, but he is not afraid of hard work and was one of our top students. I feel that he has that rare combination of an original voice, the ability to really connect emotionally with the movie, excellent compositional and technical skills, a love of collaboration, a professional positive attitude and the ambition and determination it takes to succeed in this highly and evermore competitive industry.

It is my opinion that he would be of great benefit to any professional situation of which he became part.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions.

Best Regards,

George S. [email protected]
